Goodbye Walter Mitty (snap crackle and pop)
In real life, Walter Mitty isn't anything special. He gets bossed around by his wife a lot. He can't do simple mechanical things. He's forgetful. He's not a great driver, and people always seem to be either yelling or laughing at him for one blunder or another. To compensate for his failings in the real world, Mitty creates an entire "secret life" for himself: a series of fantasies in which he is a powerful, decisive man admired by those around him – everything he is not in reality. FOYDC. |

ah jesus thats a classic! |

It's amazing someone says he going some place and all of a sudden he's being called Walter mitty. I remember when i went to Marbella last year and Sandown with a lady friend both times i was called Walter Mitty usually by Wildman and his band of muddy men. zzzzzzzzzzzz

By:
In fairness this forum is like a Walter Mitty convention at times

Jockey threw it away, its as simple as that. Failed to hit it once inside the last furlong. All she was doing was messing with the rains for the last 250m of the contest.
|
|
By:
and a lovely juicy sp.i was in a hackett shop and local magpie said at the furlong pole how far.i knew we were fcuked then.!!..cathy very bad there, thought she had it won.a couple of cracks and she was home
|
|
By:
Was on Gin Time myself but how you can blame the rider is baffling, hardly her fault they weren't drawn near the rail & hitting a horse that is wandering badly has several potential consequences, one of which is rarely getting the horse to go faster in a straight line. Did everything she could in my opinion to get that horse home, that's racing.

|
By:
Gentlemanjohn, the key phrase you used and you are correct "she did everything she could". Unfortunately what Cathy can do isnt up to much.
|
|
By:
Guess you're not a fan then jimeen and that's your prerogative of course. Personally have huge time for cathy, think she's one of most underrated jockeys in the uk at the moment, like to see her getting more opportunities

nothing to see here...move along....just the usual, mug punters arguing why they lost.

shes weak in a finish john.thats the crux.looks of but gets beaten in too many close finishes that she should win

^^^^and there u have it folks.the wisdom of a mug punter.^^^^

its funny the man who calls everyone a mug punter..he put up his tips for 3 days and soon stopped..and no one gave him stick...but it was noticed he soon stopped with them being a no show..sorry but it would be a joke if it wasent so sad...

Gentlemanjohn,i suppose that its a sexist thing but i just cant really have women sportsmen competing on a level playing field with men in any sport, horse riding is just one of those disciplines. I know you can say Nina Carberry is better than most males at the level she is at,and Jane Mangan as well. People will be able to give examples of women riding Cheltenham winners, group 1 winners etc,but i have noticed particularly in the last few years that women jockeys have become fashionable, and there seems to be an abundance of them riding thesedays. Women simply cant have the same physical strength,or the real determination of a competent man in a close finish. I rarely bet women jockeys myself, and never ever back non amateur ones.

Sorry I couldn't leave ye with a winner, but however I do completely agree with jimeen on this. One to note while I'm away is der blaue reiter.
Adios, Snap |

Fair enough jimeen, you're putting your hard-earned on the line so you can be as sexist as you like. However i dont fully buy the women cant be as strong in a finish as men line. Sure it feels like common sense but i've seen enough of hayley turner - yes i think she's a very capable jockey - and other women riding finishes to wonder if that's totally the case. And I dont think you get to ride 50 winners a season like cathy gannon does if you're that weak in a finish. It's not as if she's riding odds on favourites every time she saddles up. Also i think there might be better reasons to explain why more and more female jockeys are being successful other than it being part of some fashion trend

Open to correction by the statisticians , but reference the lady jocks , I have the feeling that they are better performing when they are on the all weather tracks than on grass surface . It is a gut feeling though , and I am not that big a fan of Lingfield , Southwell , Wolverhampton or Dundalk . I have noticed a few of the younger girls "stealing " a good few lengths at the start , and presumably the others dismiss them as potential winners and ride accordingly . And they dont always come back to the rest of the field .
Like Cathy and Hayley myself , neither into show boating , just honest to goodness horsemanship ( no pun intended ) , and there is room for them alongside the men . And occasionally I back one of their mounts . Over the sticks its a lot harder for a womans muscles to help steer a large conveyance , Nina and Katy and Jane are all superb riders , jockeys table might be a bit different if they were men ! |
