Richters, even your messiah Wildman(read HF Thread) believes HF is more effective on soft ground. I see HF has gone from your nap of the meeting to your place bet of the festival, losing confidence??

Long run is a completely different horse since his novice days and even when he won the GC,anyone that can't see that hasn't been watching much racing.

I never said LR won't place on Friday week,I just said he'd be more effective with a bit off cut.As for HF as long as the ground is good -I would be very surprised if he wins, what piece of form this year makes you think he is back to his 2011 form??
Report richters March 6, 2013 12:12 AM GMT
dj what line of granduoets form do ye think is good enough to beat hf....imo hf would beat ror 9/10 times...last year being the one exception......hf was champion in 2011 and 3rd last year after a well below par run coupled with a terrible effort in the saddle.....so this years prep runs in ireland are irrelevant to me.....the form im interested in is c&d.......and with the stable in bullish mood i cannot see a repeat of last years debacle.......grandouet has undoubted claims but the lack of a recent run is a worry i  must say......good luck anyway dj.....
Report dj876 March 6, 2013 12:15 AM GMT
Being honest,Nicky Henderson's lack of comment on Grandouet is worrying. There is rain forecast in Cheltenham over the next few days,in which case I wouldn't be against HF(Has to be good to soft or better to lay)Gl.

My opinion is Long Run is a plodding pig, he won the Gold Cup because better horses took each other on too far out and he simply outstayed them. That is not to say he cannot win again this year but i will be disguisted if there is not at least one better than him, namely Sir Des Champs and Bobs Worth.
Report Newmanix March 6, 2013 8:13 AM GMT
ive been notcting up small bets on cape tribulation at nice prices for the gc, had him last year in chelt and aintree at 20/1 each time.  if pn or nh trained him, he would only be around 8/1 this year.  I love long run and I love the fact he has never fallen, but at the prices I am happy with the 33/1 Im got with laddies.

See what i mean , a , p.r. stunt as usual by them ....Glad to see this thread is now back on a racing topic ....Premier i would have thought along those lines re l/run , but having watched the k/george over and over i must admit I've changed my mind ...He showed tremendous courage to fight his way back into it , having looked beaten at the last after making a terrible error he clawed his way back and won going way in the end ...In last years race he got the mother of all rides , Young waley cohen got him into a barging match from 5 out , Never did he move to the outside at any stage , insisting on going between horse .Which in the end cost him the race , allowing a'p to get a run at him at the last , He should have kicked on at the top of the hill and used his stamina ...I hope that given a good ride he'll be there or there abouts....
Report Bigwillystyle March 6, 2013 11:50 AM GMT
Wonky he beat a non stayer in the King George.  He is a slow boat but slow boats can win the Gold Cup.  Would be amazed if he beat the two at the top of the market especially with the clown riding him.

Wonky id say i would have won on Long Run that year.  Gold cup is the worst of the top races at the festival.  Much better race if it was over 3 Miles.  The extra 1/4 mile gives the plodders a chance.  Some of the winners and placed horses over the past few years have been poor enough horses.

i just hope Mr O'Leary lets him take his chance in the GC,Are we any closer to knowing which race he'll take his chance in?

With Davy taking the mount on SDC,i take it Bryan Cooper would be in for a very exciting ride were he to take his chance in the GC,Although a certain Mr McCoy would be available...

I cannot for the life of me see why long run is a certainty for a place,in fact i would have thought he may well finish out with the washing. He has no line of form ever that would make anybody fancy him. I could give 10 reasons why he wont win,and cant think of any why he will.
Report CheltenhamRoar March 6, 2013 8:19 PM GMT
jimeen,C'mon don't be silly,He's a 2 time King George winner as well as a previous GC winner.Has never Fallen and has never finished out of the first 3 in 24 lifetime starts,

what have u been smoking?
Report jimeen March 6, 2013 8:31 PM GMT
Long run was the top 4yo in france when Waley Cohen splashed out the huge fee, so he has plenty miles on the clock now. He would have been at his peak of his powers the year of his sun alliance chase where he was slaughtered by weapons amnesty. The gold cup he won was against two old stagers way past there best,he managed to get beat last year in one of the worst renewals ever. He has first time cheekpieces, worst rider in the race, and is up against some top newcomers to the scene. Scrambling home against captain chris is hardly earth shattering form, and also silvianaco conti has a verdict over him as well this year. He actually got beat by kauto star in the king george when that horse was rising 12 years of age. What do you think bobs worth, sir des champs and co will do to him?
Report CheltenhamRoar March 6, 2013 9:19 PM GMT
Fair points jimeen,i just think its a bit harsh in the way u dismiss his chances out of hand as if he's never won a decent race,
He is a very consistent horse at the highest level if nothing else,i wont be backing him to win but i do respect his chances.
Report Fatandprotein March 6, 2013 9:27 PM GMT
I'm not an acquaintance of Mouse Morris but I spoke to him last week at Thurles and for what its worth I said I thought First L.. had a great squeak in the Gold Cup, he said without a blink "will you tell them that, staying is all he does"
Report jimeen March 6, 2013 9:29 PM GMT
He may have won decent races, but has been lucky to face either below average or veteran fields. If he cant contain synchronised and co,he will surely struggle this year. I dont think anybody will argue that this years is a much better race. I think he has no chance myself, but thats the game, doctors differ and patients die.
Report CheltenhamRoar March 6, 2013 9:35 PM GMT
You could well be right jimeen, and i find it hard to disagree with u re last years renewal,Sync was no world beater, and the Giant Bolster is bang average,Well not that long until we find out,im happy to side with First Lieutenant,If he's allowed take his chance that is!!

Report CheltenhamRoar March 6, 2013 9:53 PM GMT

Waley-Cohen feels Long Run heads into Friday's Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup a better horse than the one who finished third last year.
On that occasion he found Synchronised and The Giant Bolster too good but warmed up for this year's renewal by landing the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton.

The jockey told Channel Four Racing: "He goes into the race in really good form. He's a horse I've got to grow up with and know really well. With a week to go we're there with a really live contender.
Report steeringjobnap March 9, 2013 11:36 PM GMT
The Giant Bolster probably best fits the category of "genuine plodder"

Great value to be had EW over 3.25 miles of the undulating track.

He traded 1.33 I/R in the win market last year.

If he did somehow win however, I wouldn't blame Rodi Greene for having mixed feelings about such a situation...
