Well in my opinion they are the most important thing to look at when investing your cash. Happened to see about 4 or 5 races this afternoon and in almost each and every one of them the best horse didnt win. Some of these guys are comical they are so bad. You can often judge the trainer by the jockeys that they employ as well, invariably the rubbish trainers will be loyal to rubbish jockeys. Emma Lavelle is a perfect example of such, Jack Doyle,Elsworth and Dougie ,that is a real treble to be entertaining.

Love to see one of the top jockeys aboard when investing . Only trust unknowns I have seen over a period of time with my own eyes and based on my own observations .

When the commentators are talking pre race about "gambles" I look to see if its a "chalk" jockey aboard  , invariably they get chinned if so .  If they win I take note .  Some good young ones out there , but most have "form " picked up from being on horses and riding since they were just out of nappies . A bit like good hurlers ( generally) .

Whoever said the horse isn't important?, PW Mullins sits proudly in 4th place on the jockey standings, hardly his riding ability?

Patrick Mullins a bit like Joseph O Brien is in a privileged position and both have been given opportunities that they may have not got only for their connections. Saying all that Mullins rarely makes mistakes, doesn't complicate matters and very very rarely loses a race he should have won. He is more than capable, and although not the most stylish around, he  can get horses to jump fluently. Another thing in his favour is that he is fully aware of his limitations and that is no bad thing .There are quite a few riders who's talent doesn't come close to what they themselves think it is .Two glaring examples of such are Paddy Brennan and Robert Power.

just a bad day at the office jimeen, name me a jockey be it McCoy, Ruby, Barry, Carberry etc who never made a mistake?, for every race a jockey might lose you'll have scores of races the best horse will win.

me thinks henry brook is another top notcher conditional.....who deserves every success.....his talents have not gone unnoticed tho....regularly rides for big yards like pipes and mc cains...

Silvergreaser, quite alot of the time the best jockeys ride the best horses, the most talented rider is very often paired with the best animal . Of course middle of the road and even worse win races, but they will never win a race they shouldnt and frequently lose races that others would not. The best riders are not going to be error free but they will make less mistakes than most. To have maximum faith in a selection it is always very beneficial to have a top trainer and jockey on your side, because very often having the best horse is nowhere near enough.

Nearly all the biggest bets I have had in my betting lifetime have involved the best horse paired with the best or near the best jockey  , trainer also a factor , but not as big as the horses form / capability and the jockey .

Thinking back to Santa Claus ( Scobie Breasley ) , Nijinsky ( Lester ) , Mill Reef ( Geoff Lewis ) , L'Escargot ( Tommy Carberry ) , Vaguely Noble ( Bill Williamson ) , Apalachee ( not sure of that , possibly Lester  ) .  Into the more modern era Istabraq ( Charlie ) .

Apart from L'Escargot ( 13/2 , 2nd fav ) which I backed the week before at 100/6 and Vaguely Noble ( 8/1) all the big bets were on favourites  , both the afore mentioned  horses were each way certs in my book given normal luck . Winning was a( big )bonus . L'Escargot bought me a new car as it let up 4 each way trebles and a quad from the previous Saturday ( 3 winners running onto it ) .

Not a bad jockey among them .  Do remember one other ( infamous) gamble I got dragged into via info , at Cheltenham , with a minor jockey aboard , pulling double top of the hill , jockey panicked apparently and horse sensed it and stopped running , finishing fourth I think . Tube of a jockey , horse was OK , should have won but didn't .

I'll never forget the time the horse I backed at The Curragh was cruising into the lead about 100 yards out when the green as grass apprentice gave the poor beast an almighty belt of the whip.  The poor animal almost stopped from the fright, and lost the race.
Good jockeys keep cool, and let the horse do its best.  Most horses try.

strongly agree with that, he's going to take high rank in future seasons if he keeps improving and can learn when to wind his neck in
