My understanding was that it did not predict the end but it only went as far as that date - they either ran out of stone or chisels or the guy doing the work just got pi$$ed off and had had enough.

My mate disproved this tosh in one fell swoop . Why , he averred this a/noon, if the world ended on Dec 21 Australia would be gone by now as it's already Dec 21 there.
Sounded logical to me .
