More likely the Irish Racing Post that got it removed farrier, for crabbing the pointless Wille Mullins "if,but maybe" column in their Sunday edition.
Report topfarrier December 19, 2012 10:23 AM GMT
Quite possibly Silver although these trainer columns are only supposed to be a bit of light reading aren't they?

Nobody seriously looks at them as a source of profitable information.

I'd imagine trainers would have to be careful not to mislead punters with irrelevant information such as 'horse 'won' a schooling 'race'.
Report wildmanfromborneo December 19, 2012 12:05 PM GMT
Topfarrier if you had a horse running and I bustled over to you asking for information you are entitled to tell me what you like but if you call me over to give me unsolicited advice you are honour bound to tell the truth. There is a difference between an interview when you can be caught on the hop and an article where presumably you can proof read before you send it.
Report topfarrier December 19, 2012 12:22 PM GMT
I understand what you are saying Wildman but in reality there is also a difference between giving someone 'unsolicited

advice' Shocked and a newspaper column which the trainer has very little to do with.

You can mull over the rights and wrongs of that if you like but ultimately that's always been the way it is.
Report wildmanfromborneo December 19, 2012 12:26 PM GMT
You are probably right I was just struck by how blatant it was and surprised,I haven't had a bet for ten days so wasn't influenced by it.

Surely it is more the RPs problem but then again as long as it's not effecting sales they probably don't give a sheet. If they read his column from last Sunday and then read his quotes in their paper printed on Monday they should be asking what they are paying him for.

On the subject of schooling hurdles, I know it's a million that trainers are going to let us know before the race that "He won a schooling hurdle at Thurles last week" etc. But why do they persist in letting us know after the animal has hosed up,ie that French import of Tony Martin's at Gowran last week.
One of the advantages of going racing I suppose that you get to hear these nuggets before having your bet.

If you're born into an Irish racing family you're almost pre-programmed at birth to be as cryptic and evasive as you can as far as the nuisance to be barely tolerated the betting public are concerned.

When there's a graded race on the Irish calender the Irish Racing Post will usually put aside a bit of print space to accomodate trainers comments for the days big race, not that they'd be ringing up too many trainers never much more than 4 or 5 runners anyway, another pointless exercise, the whole lot of them sing from the same hymn sheet, there'll be at least and if a but or a maybe in every sentence, some could get the whole 3 into one sentence.

I've noticed many English trainers are not so tight lipped as their Irish counterparts, I've often got some good winners or big priced placed runners by reading the trainer comments on English big races in the Racing Post, some trainers will say I've laid this one out for this race, the ground is perfect and I think he'll run a huge race, take the hint. I know it doesn't always work out, but usually when a trainer is that bullish the horse usually runs a cracker.

Could you imagine any Irish trainer been that bullish in public?, no, I thought so!.

Laugh that's a wind up right??

Good aul Jellybelly

"I'll be happy if he finishes in the first 6" Denman wins the Hennessy by half the track

If Chemical Nicky told me it was Tuesday i'd check the calender to be sure.

All trainers are the same and it's best to not pay that much attention to them in my opinion and do the work yourself. Sure no horse ever gets beaten any more without having coughed during the week or needs a breathing operation.

U would swear trainers were were making excuses bearing in mind their future stud careers and as for going for weaker festival races to enhance their record in terms of legacy,If I owned Quevega and thought she could win the world hurdle(worth 4 times the mares hurdle)-I know where she would run in it.

Silver G u really seem to hate this game(or at least every human involved in this sport)
Report silvergreaser December 19, 2012 6:40 PM GMT
Whats with all the smiley faces?, I didn't say them all, but many are more upfront than their Irish counterparts, and its often much easier to read between the lines.
premier, why can I not back a winner from digesting a trainers bullish comments or at least nail the place?, you should try it yourself sometime, you'd be surprised.

Dj, you're right I trust none of them, I call it HORSE racing, not Ruby racing or Aidan racing.

Why so bitter??

There is a difference between a trainers comment and a trainers column especially one he is paid for, there is a difference in saying nothing and deliberately throwing people off the scent.
Report silvergreaser December 19, 2012 6:55 PM GMT
Well put it this way dj they're dismissive of you, "pocket talker", "when was the last time you rode a winner put down" etc if you dared complain. Yet many punters will have their racing heroes in the human form, I'd much rather celebrate the horses achivements, without the horses ability the humans are nothing. Might sound simplistic but it stands up to the closest scrutiny.

This^^

Really makes me laugh that,The latest one been Don Cossack,Are any horses even beaten on merit these days??

getting back to willie mullins the man is a true genius..with nh horses but he is as bad as it gets for giving punters anything to go on imo...

I have read your arguments over and over again on these issues Silver G,not many to disagree that the vast majority of jockeys would win on most winners. What I don't understand is why you waste your time re-iterating the same negative spiel over and over.Would it not be more enjoyable and frugal use of your time to identify profitable opportunities and exploit these.

BTW,although I agree with you to a certain extent about jockeys,I do disagree from a training perspective but don't wish to debate it with you, have seen your arguments too many times than I care to imagine-"It's not rocket science etc."

I think my comments were relevant to the thread dj well at least wildmans original thread before it was pulled, I'm negative about people who are extremely negative about the betting public, I don't cry foul after every race, but years of experience has thought me to thread very carefully as far as trainers are concerned, they're the punters worst enemy by a country mile not the much maligned bookmakers.

I'm surprised gant hasn't made an appearance, I'm usually like a magnet to him.

Have had some great winners in my times listening to irish trainers interviewed on tv, and some nice priced ones at that.
I find when listening to english trainers they are not as forth coming or give misleading info, one notable case was when I was gonna lump on Denman for the Hennessy at 5/1 and heard Paul Nicholls saying he's not fully fit, will come on for the run, not expecting much ....etc etc I think he won it by 15 to 20L LaughLaughLaugh
