With Tom Watson announced today as USA captain for gleneagles attention will now turn to announcement in January of the European one and what an all Ireland battle it's turning out to be between Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke........ Thought McGinley was being groomed for it until recently when his supposed good pal Clarke decided to go for it ........Personally and I know some will disagree with me but I think it's pretty bad form of Clarke to do this to McGinley .... it's no secret how good McGinley and his family were to Clarke when he went through his difficulties a few years  back and the reality for McGinley now is that if he doesn't t get the nod now for Gleneagles it s highly unlikely it will come around for him again while Clarke would be a logical choice for 2016 in the states due to his popularity with American players and fans ...... Maybe I m being a bit harsh on Clarke as maybe he feels or has been advised that its unlikely the tour would appoint an irish captain two Ryder cups in a row and now might be his only chance of getting it ......... From a betting perspective all firms have Clarke odds on around 4/7 to get it but I think 13/8 with Ladbrokes about McGinley could be a good bet considering he got a bit of a boost to his chances today when it was announced that Francesco Molinari and another Irishman Peter Lawrie were elected to the euro tour player committee and both would be McGinley supporters ........ mcIlroy also tweeted again tonight that McGinley should get it ........ McGinley and Clarke go back a long way and I hope it doesn't t damage their friendship ........

Interesting one this given the history ( good ) between the two , but again maybe its tactical , with Paul getting the nod this time and Darren the next , which fits the eye well .

Not for betting on it unless you have inside info ,  apparently it is a 2 horse race , and maybe a toss up . Hopefully Shane Lowry will make a big move towards top 30 or so next year , as I dont think Padraig is getting anywhere towards  team selection  , and not getting any younger .

I wouldn't know too much with the personal history between them,I,d imagine on achievement it would surely have to be Clarke with 14 euro wins against Mc Ginleys 4,even giving his excellent contributions as a player to the ryder cup team.Surely Jimenez would be in the frame for 2016.

I hope McGinley gets it.  Clarke is not the angel the public thinks he is.

I know it s one of the quickest ways to the poor house betting on things like this but anyone that has an account with Corals or someone in the UK  could do worse than backing Paul McGinley tonight at 7/4 .
Clarke has come out this evening saying " now might not be his time " which in other words means i ve canvassed the committee done the numbers and looks like i won t have enough . Only other option is monty and i can t see them doing that as he has only come into the running since the announcement of Watson as American captain and could be seen as 1 up to the americans if they appoint him .

McGinley only 1.22 on betfair now so if you can get some of that 7/4 with Corals it could be an all ireland price . I ve enough on at 13/8 with Ladbrokes .

All should be revealed this week !!!!!

I tried to get on that with Koral, whilst it is listed on oddschecker, it isn't on their site.  I phoned them up, they said it might only be available in shops.  Or more likely the market has been pulled.

Hope it comes in for you Mick.

Monty 1.01 . What a difference a day makes apparently .
Report pa lapsy January 12, 2013 11:12 AM GMT
£300 to win £3, might to a possible "mistake" though i doubt it,bit stunned if it is the case so soon after Celtic Manor.
Report Kelly January 12, 2013 1:00 PM GMT
Might be a slip of the keyboard , Pa .  Laid some of it myself at 1.01 , but not much left when I noticed it .  Bonkers markets these  , reckon I just was lucky in when I looked at the market . Livens up an otherwise boring day so far , the cricket yielded no activity so far .  Waiting for the rugby to supplement the racing fare .

This is now looking like a tight call voting wise between McGinley and Monty .....Still hopeful McGinley might swing it !!!
Report dinglemick January 15, 2013 3:22 PM GMT
Sky Sports have done a u turn now !!!! . After stating yesterday that Monty looks like he going to get it , they have just said now that McGinley favoutite !!! . All should be revealed in the next hour or so .

there are only 10 of the committee (17 ) there to vote ..... Bjorn , Aguilar , Paul Casey , Clarke ( who will probably be lucky if Mcginley ever speaks to him again after all this is over !! ) Fernandez-Castano , David Howell , Jacquelin , Peter Lawrie , Molinari and  Stenson ......

I think McGinley might just have 6 of them to vote for him .... fingers crossed Scared

Is the Ryder Cup next week or something, why all the hoo ha over an event taking place 18 months from now? Still, fair play to those holding 7/4 mcginley bet slips, i'd be keen if i had one of those for sure!
Report dinglemick January 15, 2013 3:41 PM GMT
yeah i know john long time away all right ...i suppose i just its a pretty big thing to become the first ever Irishman to be named captain of the European Ryder cup Team .....
Report kincsem January 15, 2013 4:41 PM GMT
Miguel-Angel Jiminez would be a good pick next time.  Paul McGinley this time.
Report gentlemanjohn January 15, 2013 4:52 PM GMT
Dont get me wrong, love watching the Ryder Cup when its on, but 18 months of a build up is 17 and a half months too long in my book, and fair play to McGinley if he gets it, a decent fella by all accounts, but whole captaincy thing is ridiculously over-egged. If they could win with a bell-end like monty in charge, they could win with anybody given the right golfers in the side
Report Kelly January 15, 2013 5:52 PM GMT
Keeping an eye on the market .  Trend suggests Paul is inching home .
Report dinglemick January 15, 2013 6:00 PM GMT
Had a look there kelly looks like McGinley or is Jiminez coming with a wet sail !!!! .

Des Smyth was just on TV 3 sports news basically not happy about Clarkes performance in all this ..... Whatever happens McGinleys finished with him anyway and i wouldn t blame him

WELL DONE PAUL MCGINLEY ...... The right man won
Report Vubiant January 15, 2013 6:26 PM GMT
Paul ticks all the boxes and win , lose or draw -the right decision has been made.
I saw an hour long interview on Setanta last night where McGinley spoke very well in conversation with Gary Murphy.
His whole attitude and demeanour suggests to me that Europe will lack nothing in the captaincy area.
Report Kelly January 15, 2013 6:34 PM GMT
Great news .  Paul will be a good captain , the word on the street supports this view .
Report pa lapsy January 15, 2013 6:37 PM GMT
Good opening post Mick,Very well done, you,re beating 1.01 shots an allCrazy.
Think he will be a great captain, personable, unflapable fellow.

It s a great day lapsy for all Irish Golf supporters .....I thought he did very well in the press conference , a nice touch also  not to forget his roots in mentioning The GUI and how his love of the team games stems from his days in GAA ....A good guy overall.

You never know RTE might even give it a mention in its sports bulletin !!!!!!!!
Report Deplasterer January 15, 2013 6:54 PM GMT
Happy days, comes across well always, & has connections to the north west in Buncrana, so we can claim a piece of him too.Tongue Out
Report Kelly January 15, 2013 7:02 PM GMT
All good so far .  It will be interesting to see his vice captains when that comes around . Thomas and Miguel plus one other would be my guess , maybe a Scot . But thats 12 months plus away , so lets enjoy the moment .
