Amazing to hear this actor -a former 'cultural ambassador' no less , badmouthing the plan for the Gathering next year. Tourism is Ireland's most important indigenous industry and the Gathering seems like an admirable attempt to increase tourist numbers at a time of national crisis. The more revenue generated ,the better the chance of reducing emigration especially from the western regions. I can't figure why ,with so many issues one could get stirred up about , this Byrne chap tries to turn people off a straightforward initiative with a flow of gratuitous invective. Mind you , I've always regarded actors as notoriously unstable characters -I mean ,spending most of your life pretending to be someone else - what would you expect ?
i think the guy said what a lot of us are thinking ....its a disgusting idea imo...the real gathering should be , our goverment been sent a message that we've had enough , a marching we should go ...lets gather in the streets and claim back our rights ...this please come home we need ye is simply , paddywackery at its worst..get the country working , then ask them home , to a job....honesty , something us irish are not good at..vubiant , i think gay deserves a clap on the back for been honest ......

As a sometimes tourist myself I often ponder what brings people in . For me , something to see , something to do , some activity , some relaxation . It helps a lot if the natives are friendly , otherwise you never go back near the place , and value helps to make the stay more pleasant . And good weather helps .
Not sure what the gathering is about , sounds a bit like the "family get togethers " prevalent some years ago , dont go for that myself , people with the same surname dont always make the best company even if the degrees of seperation principle applies more than generally .
We have some of the best sporting and cultural scenes in the world ( weather permitting) , and slowly but surely we are buying into the value concept . And the scenery is a big attraction , friends from Oz were over here with us in September / October , and they loved the autumn colours , which you would not generally get in Queensland .
Spain we aint , but we dont have problems with mossies and the like , hard to sell our island in the October to March season though , which wipes out about half the year .

Workrider -I always saw you ( and still do ) as a reasonable poster with a good sense of humour -but how can you call this 'a disgusting idea'. All countries try to stimulate tourism -it's a clear revenue earner. Every euro brought into the country is a net gain -unlike taxes . Ireland has next to no indigenous industry -tourism being the main one. The present government is trying to fix the shambles left by previous administrations. Apart from trying to increase visitors from the rest of the world -all they're saying to some of the Irish abroad is -if you have any thought of visiting Ireland over the next while -why not make it 2013? There will be a host of sporting and cultural events and , yes, you'll be helping to refloat Ireland inc. from the rocks on which it was run aground. This increased activity can induce a buzz which will lift people's spirits and jobs can be created which can keep people at home. It's a perfectly open invitation -how anyone could call it a 'scam' is beyond my comprehension. This persistent negativity and cynicism against anyone trying to do anything constructive is utterly futile and self-defeating.

This is an establishment that have no problem with exporting our problems and allowing the people that created the problems remain in situ or pay them huge pensions to keep their mouths shut. We are a sad people to allow it happen and now the self same establishment want the descendants of other generations that had to emigrate to survive to somehow help the powers that be out by pulling on the green jersey. We dont need this nonsense- we need fundemental change and lots of it. Fair play to Gabriel Byrne.

I'm sure most people in the country don't think it's disgusting to get tourists into the country to spend a few quid.
When Gabriel Byrne was getting a few quid to promote Ireland he was singing from a different hymn sheet and after crying scam he promoted his new film........Gabriel may have a dose of the I'm alright Jack.

Surely tourist spend helps everyone in the economy rather than just the powers that be?
I have no idea what Gabriel Byrne is on about. It is very unhelpful.

I have to agree totally with workrider. A brilliant post. Nailed it, in one short summary. Its a pity so many other posters cant see the trees from the wood. Just another scam, suir to fail in what ever it hopes to achieve. Just like the Health Minister today saying "its a great day for the children of Ireland", yet we may never see this childrens hospital built. They hope to have it built for 2018!!! Yet they have no planning, no builder, no tenders even gone out,and no money yet all the people that "matter" have the big pensions. This hospital may never happen. And to think that previous governments completely overlooked the really urgent matter of building a new 'childrens hospital'. All they wanted to build was the bertie bowl. Yes indeed we should be on the streets, well said workrider.

Don,t want to be too cynical with their initiative but can't blame Mr.Byrne in the slightest.Comes across as an Arthurs day for the tourism industry, dare say there are enough cultural and sporting events as it is if that is the pretext for getting tourists in. "The Gathering",my god what a name, does all it means in reality you were one the of many that came to Ireland in'13,if so it means zilch. Maybe a better way forward might be something like a tourist pack giving heavily discounted offers to attractions, cut price food and drink . Posters above thats saying clean up our own act before inviting others in,hard to disagree.

Over the last few years Byrne has been moaning about all things Ireland Inc. the truth is he has been living in the States for years now
I am not bought on the Gathering myself but at least somebody’s trying to generate something.... sure if they were doing nothing people would be complaining as well
Byrne’s a cynical fecker he was on the Turbidy show a couple of years ago around Xmas and took pleasure in saying there was no Santa when I imagine a lot of kids would have seen the show in their living rooms ........Turbidy had to say Gabriel was only messing
Byrnes done well out of his Irish Heritage so let him come up with an alternative to kick staring the economy No time for the man myself

so The Gathering co-funded the visit to NY by Today FM's Last Word -- the show on which Gaybo went off on the anti rant!http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/1107/1224326238994.html
I think what people must understand is that being anti gov/establishment does not make you anti Irish !
I must say i'm extremely suspicious about the whole thing.

Talking about going on the streets. A load of rubbish what good would that do. During the count for the last general election we had one TD who got about 5,500 first preferences calling for people to take to the streets. Some democrat - now a great friend of Mick Wallace. Why dont all those people who talk about marching put themselves up for election.

Got i can count on the one hand how many times i've agreed with Wonkster but he's spot on here, look at the Greek they got a better deal from showing their govt what they feel although they have a history of protesting and taking to the streets about things.
