Found this interesting thread on the Irish soccer forum.

http://foot.ie/threads/121098-Why-I-hate-the-GAA

Some good points, this one was the best imo:

The gaa has a national competition that I would kill for in football, on the other hand, football has the international dimension that the gaa could only ever dream of.

The attitudes of alot of gaa people towards football has turned me off the game in the past. They almost have an inferior complex that whenever there is a game on they feel the need to come out with statements like "you wont find any entertainment in the world that matches this ger" etc etc. Why not just enjoy your own sport instead of trying to justify yourself that its better than some other sport. At the end of the day, no amount of gaa pundit/fan etc etc praising their sport over another is going to make me follow gaa more than football. Football is my preferred sport, end of, but i watch gaa from time to time during the summer and can see the merits in the game. Everyone to their own. I do think football in this country suffered in the past as a result of a number of factors including the ban, this is partly the reason why GAA has greater structures, infrastructure, finances in the country compared to football.

Do some of you guys detest it as well?

I have a couple of issues;

*  The antics of the 'bannisteoirs' and their crew on the sideline at all levels from kids upwards.  They are frentetic, screaming at the kids running up and down, all self importance and no decorum.  Poor example imo.  When I go to watch kids play I usually spend my time laughing at the coaches.  Fair play they give up huge amounts of time and its great for the kids but how they behave on the sideline is completely alien to anyone who grew up playing rugby.

* The abuse of Officials and language from the sideline is disgusting.

* Very insular when it comes to sharing their facilities.

* The season on goes on for ever...I have no idea when it begins or ends.  All I know is tat there is little or no opportunity for lads to play a proper sport like rugby in the winter like they used to.

In fairness your 1st two points could apply to many team sports.

And soccer fans in Ireland seem to overstate this "they all hate soccer" theory. Rubbish.

I play for a Gaelic Football team and after the games (usually in sundays) when we head to the pub we always watch the super sunday & La Liga on sky. Yes there are a few older guys there that complain, but go into any mainly soccer pub and turn on GAA and you will get abuse, it just happens, but most GAA fans watch soccer, fact

I played GAA and Soccer (if you're english, football), and never ever had any conflict, Soccer Saturday, Gaelic tuesday and Sunday when they had the winter league.

Whats changed is the almost professional training regimes that these gaelic footballers are asked to do these days?, be it club or county, doesn'nt matter, you get paid sweet fa.

rat, my father was the local GAA club go to man, I was decent enough at gaelic, but always felt I was a better soccer player, so I kind of abandoned the gaa for soccer and the father didn't quite disown me but I always got the feeling I let him down, if you know what I mean?.

But in truth if you gave me a choice with any sport and that includes horse racing, GAA is my first preference.

Jesus, I'm posting at 4.23am, I'm not coming home from the pub early again and falling asleep and wake up to a fridge with not even a bottle to help me on my way.

No idea why anyone would hate the GAA , unless they had a political agenda .

Few organisations in the world have as enviable a record as the GAA when it comes to providing worthwhile healthy pastimes for those who want to get involved , at non punitive cost for most , and using superb facilities generally .

That they can do that is down to very good organisation ( generally) , 99% voluntary labour , and sensible arrangements across most of the GAA spectrum ( dont forget the add-ons leaving football and hurling aside ) .

Most of any "hate " for GAA stems from jealousy , mostly from soccerites in my experience , or occasionally from someone who would start an argument in a phone box .

The GAA can hold its head up proudly , and there is evidence daily of the effort they put into the national consciousness , for anyone who cares to look at facilities dispassionately compared with most other sports which constantly have the begging bowl out .  Generally the GAA funds its own projects and luckily for that is not beholden to government or subject to financial constraints prevalent in most other sports .

Thankfully the GAA has not bought into the pie in the sky syndrome . Hope and trust it never will .

To be fair there may be some dislike towards the GAA as jealousy but also the GAA wronged people with that ban, it split the country when there was no need to so a lot of rugby and soccer people never went back or dislike the gaa over it, instead of sportsmen from the ban on you were a GAA man or one of the others. Most urban centres or towns with universities or colleges are generally more Soccer or Rugby orientated while in the country side or the suburbs the GAA have it's stronghold. As for Sky the GAA would have taken it's hand off for a slice of the pie but Sky are have no interest in it. If you're in the UK our nearest neighbour, unless you have BBC NI or subscribe to premier sports you can't watch GAA in your home and you have to go to an Irish pub. It's an Irish sport and has no international appeal so Sky are not interested in it and other countries obvioulsy dont think i's as good as game as the NFL or Australian rules.

Do they play GAA up your way in Dolphins Barn.......

Debate on the ban warrants another thread .

Very few people actually observed the ban , despite the draconian lengths some GAA people went to to "shop" people . Know that a lot of high profile stars of the past ignored the rule effectively  , as I did myself at a much lower level , but rugby in the past would also have had its own rules about loyalty to their sport to the exclusion of other sports . Add in the behaviour of the supporters of certain other high profile sports and the pot gets well stirred .  Faults on all sides , just like the politicians who also stuck their fingers in the pie , for their own good mainly , not with the general good in mind .

But in this century , GAA is much more media savvy , and despite the efforts of some backwoodsmen ( lots from up here) they are running a tidy ship these days .

I've never heard about this Kelly, tell us more.
Report Kelly November 5, 2012 9:55 PM GMT
Probably only applied to the north , Ozymandius , where prejudices run deep . Stemmed mainly from certain grammar schools where soccer in particular was actively discouraged  , soccer interested pupils would have been shunned .

Nothing written down , just custom and practice I suspect . Sort of private members club .

Thankfully most of the prejudice from within sporting organisations against other sports has disappeared , guess interest in sports other than your first love has broadened via TV .  Plus the realisation that those playing other sports are not bogeymen .
