On 17th October 1962 ‘Arkle’ won at Dundalk Stadium in the ‘Wee County Handicap Hurdle.’ The evening on Friday 26th October is in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Arkle winning at Dundalk. ‘The Arkle Collection’ usually based in Foley’s Antiques, Naas, Co. Kildare will be on display on the evening of 26th October. Foley’s Antiques have amassed a fascinating and extensive compendium of Arkle related material which ranges from Arkle related photos and trophies won by rider Pat Taaffe to international fan-mail addressed to the horse himself! However, the centrepiece of the collection has got to be the addition of the very saddle upon which Taaffe rode Arkle to so many victories. These included three Cheltenham Gold Cups between 1964 and 1966, the King George VI Chase, two Hennessy Gold Cups, an Irish Grand National and a Whitbread Gold Cup. This collection is free to view at Dundalk Stadium on Friday 26th October and a complimentary race card will be given to every full paying customer!
Arkle won every race he ran in in the 1962-63 season . The only race he was not favourite in was the above race where he was a 6/1 shot carrying 11-13 .
Might encourage a few more visitors this evening , dont think many punters go to Dundalk seeking value , the overrounds there are above the national average I think . The only bookie I know who goes there says he still cant win at the track despite the tightness of the betting odds . Not necessarily a soft touch being a bookie , once was viewed as a somewhat "glamorous " occupation , think the exchanges and internet have caused a big seed change in perceptions of the occupation .
