1.55 Listowel Arms Hotel European Breeders Fund Maiden of €16,000.00 2-y-o
An above average maiden for the track with some fair types by Listowel Standards ! Hall Of Mirrors clearly is not straightforward and was all at sea around the top turn in Killarney he has had problems negotiating bends, but to his credit he came back on the bridle but didn't manage to pass the very tough IMPOUND in a great finish . IMPOUND boosted that form running a close 4th off a mark of 89 yesterday in the big Nursery ! The drop back to seven furlongs might suit HALL OF MIRRORS who is held in high regard,he holds lots of good  Group 1 entries . His earlier steering problems in Lepardstown came in a hot race  and to his credit he rallied well considering his antics veering violently across the track.!
SECRET RECIPE  ran a great race on his debut in Navan when under an educational smullen ride he stayed on under tender handling to finish 3rd to the top class Cristoforo Colombo. However that was back in May on good ground and his sire Sakhee´s Secret has yet to sire a heavy ground winner. His stock are best on good to firm ground ! The fact that he's been absent since such an eyecatching run in May suggests he's had problems, considering he missed lots of opportunities in the interim. His Navan run was excellent but may have flattered him. Ballyorban is tough and consistent but he's held by HALL OF MIRRORS on a line through
IMPOUND.
VERDICT:Despite some kinks I think HALL OF MIRRORS has lots of ability and if Joseph O'Brien(Drawn 2) can grab the rail and poach that route from Smullen
(drawn 1) I'd be thinking he can kick on off the home turn and use his fitness edge to beat Weld's long absent Colt !
SELECTION: (1) HALL OF MIRRORS (2) SECRET RECIPIE (3)BALLYORBAN

2.55 Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes of €42,500.00 3-y-o plus

CHAMONIX surged home in workmanlike fashion to be  victorious in a similar event at Galway .Powers priced him up at 15/8 at 5.30 tonight but that's been taken into 6/4 and shorter. CHAMONIX reportedly would prefer better ground but he is a tough dour out and out stayer and I'm sure Joseph will be kicking on early. His head carriage is rather ungainly and he doesn't sport cheekpieces for nothing. But he looks genuine and clearly he'll try and run these into the ground ! He'll have to do it the hard way !
Minsk, one time Triumph Hurdle favourite for Dessie Hughes, is an obvious alternative now back with John Oxx, as he has an identical rating to Chamonix on 105.
However he's been off for 207 days since that fall from grace on his hurdling debut ! A much improved horse last term he stays well and can quicken.Last year he was a big backward type and should improve whatever he does tommorow !

Another big big backward horse TANDEM will love the ground but he now steps up 4 furlongs against two tough proven stayers. However his dam LIGHT BALLET won over 11 furlongs in Longchamp and stayed 13 furlongs around DEAUVILLE, offering hope TANDEM can stay !

VERDICT:Despite reservations about his head carriage CHAMONIX will surely try to kick early and draw the speed out of his rivals. I think he's as tough as old boots and 15/8 was very fair !
SELECTION :(1)CHAMONIX (2)MINSK (3)TANDEM

3.30 Ballygarry House Hotel Novice Hurdle of €22,500.00 4-y-o plus
Whatever Jacksays made rapid progress in the spring and tops the ratings here ! He was unable to dominate in the Galway Hurdle and faded after coming under pressure 3 out .He  prefers to get his own way out in front ! But might be taken on here by TOP MADAM however surely Colgan will try and dominate and set the tempo as he stays really well and will try and run them ragged. the yard's form is a small worry, but the 2/1 Powers went is well gone .
MAGIC SPEAR could be a very good horse he was awesome in Killarney and showed a real turn of foot ! That form was boosted today !

LETHERBELUCKY had no run through the  the race  in Galway and is entitled to beat TUGBOAT this time around it clearly was a howler of a ride by Ruby on her that day !
VERDICT:If he gets his own way I'd fancy WHATEVERJACKSAYS but he might end up poor value, but is the likliest winner provided he gets his uncontested lead ! MAGIC SPEAR is overpriced at 7/1

SELECTION:(1)WHATEVERJACKSAYS (2) MAGIC SPEAR (3) LETHERBELUCKY

Also Back LETTHEREBELUCKY against TUGBOAT in a Match bet at Evs to reverse Galway form !

4.05 Guinness Kerry National Handicap Steeplechase (Grade A) of €160,000.00 4-y-o plus
Not a race I'd be inclined to bet in but a great spectacle.
My 4 against the field are
(1)Caduceus   tough stays really well won at the spring festivals !
(2)CASEY TOP Galway Plate runner up jumps and stays !
(3)WELLFORTH romped home in Bangor and Galway sure to stay !
(4)Themoonandsixpence classy horse bids to defy a long absence !

5.10 M.S.D Animal Health Maiden Hurdle of €12,000.00 5-y-o
This is what Listowel is all about quality National Hunt maiden hurdles with possible stars running !
PIQUE SOUS was very keen throughout,on his Cork hurdling debut and Emmet Mullins was unable to restrain him or get him to jump well at key points. This horse is tailor made for Ruby Walsh who will anchor him and get him jumping,in fact he pinged the last in Cork but lets be honest Emmet Mullins is very limited ! PIQUE SOUS  clearly travels like a rolls royce there is a suspicon he might not always produce loads off the bridle but he has some great runs in bumpers at the top tracks ! Willie Mullins clearly thinks a lot of him as he remarked after Bellewstown "He has got loads of speed and he is probably a Supreme Novices' horse. The sky's the limit for him."
TED VEALE flopped badly in Galway he got ran off his feet first time over hurdles there but bounced back in Sligo in a moderate maiden where he won a shade cleverly !  A bigger threat may emerge from Mumbo Jumbo, his two bumper wins last year came on similarly soft ground and he warrants plenty of respect now switched to hurdles .PIQUE SOUS holds him on their Curragh bumper form but not by much ! MUMBO JUMBO is a smashing horse and I'm told that he's been schooled since last year  and is  a super jumper. He’ll be a lovely horse to go hurdling, whether today is his day he's a horse to follow ! I think he has a big shout !

Our Vinnie finally opened his account in a bumper at Naas but only after a great tussle with The Craft Butcher inside the final quarter mile. That run confirmed my theory that hes an out an out stayer and wants further than 2 miles. He's one to note later in the season over 2 1/2miles !
VERDICT:PIQUE SOUS will be priced accordingly, but he's a class act who got a bad edcucation from his pilot Emmet  in Cork.Ruby won't fluff his lines and excels at settling keen horses ! But I remain convinced that  MUMBO JUMBO is a big threat if the market talks in his favour ! CARRIES DARLING comes from a yard that is in form and often targets this meeting !
SELECTION:(1)PIQUE SOUS (NAP ***) (2) MUMBO JUMBO(3)CARRIES DARLING (4)TED VEALE

17:40 LISTOWEL (IRE), 19 SEP 2012

McElligotts Tralee Ltd. Mercedes Benz, Flat Race (5YO to 7YO)
Winner €6,900 -  Heavy-soft to heavy in places on nh course

I'm not a great fan of punting in Bumpers but I like the bumpers from Listowel onwards and the videos are invariably worth watching a few times.

This bumper marks the recovery mission for the huge point to point talking horse TEELIN STAR who flopped at Fairyhouse at Easter in the big point to point Bumper. He was backed as if defeat was out of the question but he faded tamely after leading to the turn in ! His point form suggests he´s much better than that and, with the extra distance here likely to suit, in both his points he set up huge leads and had his races won a long way out ! Those Kilworth and Lismore races were not great contests but its rumors of some of his gallops with some fair horses that have added to his reputation. But that bubble burst badly in Fairyhouse. He's trained by the legend that is Pat Hughes P Hughes the genial maestro who trains out of Fenniscourt, Bagenalstown in  Co. Carlow. Pat Hughes was one shrewd operator at his prime landing huge strokes in his day. Pat’s first good horse was the ultra talented Potato Merchant who was superbly placed to win several big handicaps on the flat in the early 1980s (I'm showing my age-I started punting young Blush)
Pat record a fantastic big race double  in 1985 at Cheltenham and Royal Ascot. Antartic Bay was one of only two Irish trained winners at Cheltenham as Frank Berry’s mount won the Sun Alliance Chase while three months later, Time Machine landed some sizeable wagers in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot under
the brilliant Willie Carson.

His brother Seamus likes to punt and it will be interesting to see if they go to war tommorow again.
I'll be watching with interest. But won't have a bet in this race !

Happy Punting !!!! Excited

I do think PIQUE SOUS will be best on  good/good to soft ground but he handled very bad ground in Tipperary with the minimum of fuss and I think the ground will continue to dry out a bit. It will be probably be dead ground tommorow.
Report Stamford Bridge September 18, 2012 10:31 PM BST
Refering back to the bumper recall the words of Colman Sweeny undoubtedly one of the best amatuer jockeys I've seen he spoke about TEELIN STAR in the Spring !!"Then I rode a very special horse called Teelin Star to win for Pat Hughes and the reception I got afterwards was wonderful. I've been lucky to ride good horses like Denman and Finian's Rainbow in their point-to-points, but Teelin Star could be the best I have ever ridden. He is a freak of nature."
As we know he bombed out in Fairyhouse so the Jury is out ! It remains to be seen if he can redeem his reputation !

P.S F.A.O SNAP CRACKLE POP I was writing up the post hadn't seen yours...But it's not the end of the World is it !!!Whoops

Stamford, imho Teelan Star's pilot, while very decent in P2P's and over obstacles, is not a bumper pilot.Got the pace all wrong on Teelan in the P2P bumper, and I think its a big negative to have him on top in a bumper.
Report Stamford Bridge September 18, 2012 10:48 PM BST
Respect your opinion, but he gave some exhibition of pace judgement on SALSIFY in Cheltenham in The FoxHunters a masterclass, rode it like a non trier and they came back to him ! You are probably spot on JayTrump in that he's a top class Chase and Point to Point Jockey but isn't as good in bumpers. I think the same is true of derek O'Connor he's way better between the flags than on the racecourse proper !!!

So yeah very fair comment !!!

thank you for the reviews this week sb, gives food for thought whether the reader agrees or otherwise.

i will be out to get  whateverjacksays. especially as a juicy place lay on top of the win lay.
mckiernan is a streak trainer, a run of good results and then a barren period. last year no winner from i think mid july until january. his horses were peaking mid summer, now in the past 6-8 weeks they look as if they are sour or sick. we have 6 possibles running against whatever, a few fresh ones. makes the running, weakens tamely heading for home.

Yeah I agree he seems to blow hot and cold does McKiernan . He has often come and done me when you least expect it ! He certainly is not afraid to run his horses he often over races them !
Report Stamford Bridge September 18, 2012 11:01 PM BST
I'm thinking the  first time tongue tie tommorow will be a big help to PIQUE SOUS.For those who often wonder what the point of fiting a tongue tie is. It's   to prevent a horse from getting his tongue over the bit, which would make the animal very difficult to control. It is usually a strip of cloth or rubber, passed through the mouth and tied below the chin.
Report Bassanio September 18, 2012 11:19 PM BST
I would take every word that a ptp jockey uses about a horse that he rose with a barrel not a pinch of salt. Teelin Star bounced out and made all against dreadful poopostion. Undeniably impressive but raced against horses that would never win a race under rules.

So many of these ptp jocks come out with rubbish about their mounts which can massively inflate their reputations and their price. This is hardly by accident or simply uncontrolled enthusiasm.
Report Stamford Bridge September 18, 2012 11:26 PM BST
Yeah without doubt Trainers and Jockeys invariably inflate the reputation of Bumper and Point to Point Winners ..It's merely a sales pitch a bit of marketing by them and you can't blame them for trying to increase their horses potential sale Price !!!

I definitely agree that the Lismore and Kilworth Points TEELIN STAR won were decidedly moderate and the form has yet to stand up !

Actually I recall Derek O'Connor opposing TEELIN STAR in his Racing Post Column saying that he hadn't beaten much despite the manner of his wins...
Is it a case of All Style No Substance ???
Report Bassanio September 18, 2012 11:39 PM BST
I am far more inclined to go with style rather than substance and I think there is nothing to his form.

The trouble is that it is the same form that there was nothing to before Fairyhouse and he could be laud at 8/11 in a very competitive race. This time he looks like he will be 13/8 or bigger in quite a weak contest. Trying to find solid alternative to him that will handle conditions is not easy. I will sit it out at current prices but if he is supported again I will lay him at odds on.
Report Stamford Bridge September 18, 2012 11:48 PM BST
I defintely won't be having a bet in the bumper. But I will be fascinated to see if they come for him or will he be a big drifter. It's a moderate enough bumper.. Klepht after a long time off has had 3 quick hard races in a short space ! He allowed the shock winner to much leeway in Roscommon !!!
Report Tolmi September 19, 2012 11:26 AM BST
Listowel is notoriously slow to dry out and I think you will need a real stayer to win the National. The 3 mile handicap chase was run yesterday in 7m 10s an amazing 70s slower than standard. While the National will be a run in a good bit quicker it will still take 6m 40s plus.I think there are at least 3 in the top 6 in the betting who have serious trip/ground doubts namely Casey Top,Themoonandsixpence and Premier Dane. While I would be keen to oppose these finding the winner is still not easy!!
Report workrider September 19, 2012 11:30 AM BST
i really like letherbelucky myself ..as has been pointed out already , ruby not at his best at galway ...i know she has to find with the winner at down royal but the longer trip should play to her strengths , shes sure to go on the ground imo..so a sporting bet for me...
Report Bassanio September 19, 2012 11:45 AM BST
Letherbelucky was not travelling the last day. She didn't jump those horrible Easyfix hurdles at all well and was having to be niggled from some way out before stamina became an issue in the last few furlongs. It was far from a howler by Ruby the last day although maybe he should have really got after her from a bit further out.

She looks an out and out stayer and 3miles will be what she wants soon. Whether she would have reversed form with Tugboat on 4lb better terms is debatable, although he travelled well and got a great run up the inner at Galway. She may struggle to lie up with these again although might jump better over these hurdles and this is her first run left handed. I expect she will be staying on well though and is likely to be a better bet in running than she is beforehand.
Report Bigwillystyle September 19, 2012 11:52 AM BST
I think letherbelucky has no chance today.  This in my opinion is a better race than she has contested and there are jsut too many dangers to her.  She has done well to win what she has as i think she is limited as you wil all see today.(Hopefully)

Great thread and with the recent demise of Turfform surely there is an opening for Stamford Bridge.
The thread is informative with some timely contributions from some other great posters,it also has a pleasing side affect in that it is irritating the begrudging sociology graduate Ozymandius.
The listed race is a fascinating contest with nice prize money,Chamonix will start favourite but I dont like him,he had a desperate hard race at Galway and I doubt his resolution,Minsk won't be ready and although undoubtedly talented is being messed about,I like Tandem and although his trainer is out of form he is an improver who will like the longer trip but my selection is the outsider Defining Year.He will love that ground and is ridden by Shane Foley, best jockey in Ireland this season, whilst the sire and trip are a worry he was staying on manfully at Leopardstown last run and at his double figure price is worth a bet.
The first race is also a puzzle but with just four runners may be easier, again my selection is ridden by Shane Foley.Hall Of Mirrors is an out an out tramp and liable to do anything,Secret Recipe won't have the ground,Fortify will only be looking on as such is their determination for Joseph to be champion jockey their second strings will not try when Joseph is riding. So by a process of elimination we arrive at the consistent Ballyorban who although by Cape Cross seems to handle the ground.

I am also very much aware of the role jockeys have in selling horses on from the ptp field in as similar way to agents and everyone else. He would have been sold before Fairyhouse as many offers came in, but going along with the comments made they put an insane valuation on him.

Many views have been expressed on pointers and the remarks attached to them, on these threads over the past 9 months and some very interesting points were put forward.

I would expect Teelin to be very fit today as if he is to be put back in the shop window, they will want him to beat this average field well.

Looks a dour stayer based on that and I am not surprised to read that they will go chasing rather than take in novice hurdles. He would not be good enough to win a graded novice hurdle and so they would be wasting time there. Paddock comments were that "he was a plain old type but was looked fit and well". There was little doubt that he would be tuned up for today.

My guess is he will be a 3mile+ chaser that will top out at a mark of 115 or thereabouts.

If Hales has made an offer, I would agree with the sentiments from wildman and workrider.

The ground was against him today, doesnt have the action for a soft ground horse, so on reflection , it was still a good effort for a horse whose future lies over fences over a trip.
