Not even addressed as a foul any longer and Galway seem to have noticed this and decided there is no need to solo the Sliotar anymore.
5 steps seems to be a minimum for them with double figures commonplace.
Ref gave 1 free for it today he could have given 20.
Even the Sunday Game panel laughing about it

Hurling is in a desperate state that teams couldn't be bothered to actually play hurling as long as they stop Kilkenny playing. Galway seem to have brought a whole new tactic to the game of hurling to stop kilkenny its called "swarm tactics" |

The taking liberty with Steps in the GAA is actually ruining my enjoyment of the games as now I can't stop observing. Another Question, we know from the Sunday game last night that Burke never tapped the Sliotar off the Hurley for the Second goal therefore taking 7 steps after picking up the ball. However do we actually know that Canning tapped the Sliotar off his hurley for the first goal. It happened so quick I'd nearly suggest he didn't and if so that makes 11 steps he took with the ball before release. No wonder he beat 5 players. I think Silver is onto something with the swarm tactics because I noticed it first in Football. In tight Quarters or to get free players are finding that to solo means losing valuable micro-seconds and to en d up getting swarmed. Better to just steam off with the ball in hand knowing that the chances are the ref won't blow you for it. That is fine if that is what the rulebook says but that is not what it says. It says 3 steps for Football and 4 for Hurling, no more |

I myself was amazed at the number of steps players were being allowed to take. I do believe that JC did actually play the ball off his hurley before scoring but he still took plenty of steps either side of that.

Jesus I aleways though tit was 4 for football as well when I was playing although that was 15 years ago dont think it has changed

3 for Football and 4 for hurling. I think the rule states you must solo or bounce on the 4th step.
Re canning I saw it again on the news and he did tap the ball on the hurl but fouled either side of the tap. Cody is no fool and he will see what we all saw and you can be sure it will be brought up before the next day. Kilkennt don't really do it although Tommy Walsh does abuse it at times but nothing to the extent Galway did yesterday. The only problem is that it is hard to monitor. Then again even blatant abuses were being left go Yesteday |

He was fouled by Kilkenny men before he had the chance to tap the ball off his hurl and the referee played the advantage. He didn't foul the ball after tapping it off his hurl.
Niall Burke definitely fouled the ball for his goal. Kilkenny just focus on fouling the man, and their manager is also a foul individual. |

Where have ye all been for the last 10-15 years , hurling purists know quite well that Kilkenny (although a great team when they hurl), have brought a level of physicallity (some call "dirtiness") to hurling that has mostly gone unpunished/unseen by the authorities! Hurley in the face, tapping or hitting of the elbow , grabbing the face guard ...I could go on.

The great DJ Carey was inclined to take a few steps. KK have lived on the edge of the law for years now in all aspects of the game. To beat them you have to try and match them in every department. Tommy walsh went in feet first to stop a galway man getting an overlap on goals. We could trade incidents in sundays game until the cows come home.
For me it was pulsating edge of the seat stuff and I cant wait for the replay!! |
