The real meaning of a dual star to me is someone who plays both Gaelic football and Hurling to a high level.
With the exception of the Kilcormac man Liam Currams all dual stars seem to be Corkmen,Jack Lynch being the most famous for obvious reasons but there were other greats from the seventies,Jimmy Barry Murphy,Ray Cummins,Teddy McCarthy and Denis Coughlan.It would appear impossible now to be a dual star with the advent of professionalism in the training and time spent plus the fear of injury means talented players are forced to make a choice.
All Rounders in Cricket are different but vital for any test team,my four personal favourites are Richard Hadlee,Mike Proctor,Imran Khan and Ian Botham.

keith higgins from mayo..obviously mayo hurling is at a low level but he is their best player as well as playing a crucial role for the footballers

Brendan Cummins is a fine goalie and one I would love to include in a Dual Star list but unfortunately he has won little in Gaelic football.

Alan Kerins played at a high level for Galway in both recently.
Conal Keaney is an outstanding although injury plagued hurler after a few years with the footballers. Eoin Cadogan has played at a high level in both. Hopefully Aidan Walsh will play hurling next year as he is as good a young hurler as there is in the country. |

Yes and apologies to Greg Blaney,I knew he played Hurling but wasn't aware he had a provincial championship medal.
It's my fault but when I was thinking of the Dual Stars I never considered the Ulster counties I was thinking of Limerickmen,Claremen yellow bellies and my own countymen and in fairness I left out Brendan Cummins on that ground. |

The best all rounder in cricket history is Jacques Kallis. He is also the most underrated player ever to play the game.
His achievements are incredible yet anyone would think a one season (or one series) wonder like Flintoff was better than him. Hadlee was exceptional and although Vettori's figures stack up every bit as well, he was not a game changer the way Hadlee was. |

wmfb -delighted you slipped in the cricketing all-rounders ..got me thinking about the great heroes of my youth starting with the incomparable Gary Sobers.
I followed Khan, Hadlee and Botham too -as well as warming to the exploits of Kapil Dev and Wasim Akram. Glory days indeed. |

Kapil Dev is so fondly remembered for his catch to dismiss IV Richards in the 83 final. His 175 in that tournament however was sensational. A super player and a great captain.

Alan Kerins won a football medal with Galway in 2001 and was beaten in the hurling final the same year. He also has club All Irelands in both football and hurling.

Yes Jacques Kallis would statistically be right up there as an all rounder. I once met him, not a terribly bright fellow. And that is being kind.

Irelands all round greatest sportsman of his day or any other day was Trevor George McVeagh, (1906-1968). He represented Ireland more than 70 times in 4 different sports. In 1938 he won international caps for tennis, hockey, squash and cricket. As captain of what was probably Irelands best ever hockey team, he led them to three successive triple crown victories. In tennis he represented Ireland in 17 Davis cup matches. He twice beat the great American Bill Tilden ( Wimbledon, US and French Champion and world number 1 for six successive years 1920-1925). In cricket he had a batting average of 40.88. He scored a centuary and took 5 catches in the historic Irish victory over the West Indies in 1928. He was Irish Squash Champion three times. A remarkable sporting record.

Darren Sweetnam the Cork hurling midfielder has played hockey for Ireland and rugby for the munster u20s.
