Akeed Mofeed has been sold out of John Oxx’s stable to join Richard Gibson in Hong Kong in a seven-figure deal that owner Jaber Abdullah could not refuse.

Once tipped as a Derby contender, the three year-old suffered training setbacks but was still able to line up in the Irish Derby, in which he finished a distant fourth to Camelot in very testing ground.

Akeed Mofeed recently bounced back to winning form when landing a one-mile Listed contest at Cork, which took his career record to two wins from five starts.

Oxx will now rely on Born To Sea in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown [Sept 8]. “He’s an intended runner. We took the hood off last time he ran, and he didn’t do himself justice. He overdid it a bit. So we’ll put the hood back on in the Irish Champion,” said the trainer.

The 16 confirmed entries for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on Sept 15 were announced yesterday. They are headed by the 1-3 favourite Camelot, but John Gosden has a strong hand, with five entries, including Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens and Voltigeur winner Thought Worthy.

Valyra, the unbeaten French Oaks winner, has been put down after suffering a serious injury while being prepared for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The filly, owned by the Aga Khan and trained by Jean Claude-Rouget, fractured her femur while exercising on the beach at Deauville on Wednesday morning.

"She fractured her femur this morning while she was in training," said the owner's racing manager Georges Rimaud.

"It was on the beach at Deauville where they go for a little walk in the early morning. It could have happened anywhere.

"It was a bad fracture of the femur. We looked at all solutions to try to come up with a surgical solution but unfortunately we had to let her go."

Valyra made her debut in April and won all her three starts, culminating in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly in June.

She was prominent in the ante-post market at around 12-1 for the Arc at Longchamp on October 7
