Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has announced his retirement from international football.

Given, 36, is the highest-capped player in Republic history having played 125 times for his country.

The Aston Villa man said that his decision to quit international football had been "extremely difficult".

"I have dedicated 16 years of my life to my county and I have a great affinity with Giovanni Trapattoni's squad," he added.

"I'd like to thank the Giovanni, Marco (Tardelli) and Alan Kelly for their support during my time with the team.

"I will continue to be Ireland's biggest fan and wish the lads well as they embark upon their new campaign."

While he did confirm his international retirement, a Football Association of Ireland statement added that Given had indicated that he would be prepared to "make himself available" in any emergencies in the future.

The FAI statement added the Trapattoni had spoken "at length" with Given on Monday afternoon before the retirement was confirmed.

Trapattoni praised Given for his "outstanding contributions to Ireland during his 16-year international career".

"I understand the difficult decision that Shay had to make and appreciate all of his efforts during his international career," said the Republic manager.

"He is a strong player with a great character and his love of playing for his country always shone through.

"It has been a pleasure to work with him during my time with the team. I wish him the very best in his future."

Anaglog Starts Sports Thread Shocker!!

Betfair's Irish Sports Forum resident non-sports thread creator, Anaglog's Daughter, has defended his decision to start a thread on sports - namely Shay Given's retirement from international duty.

Said the 22,000+ poster, "Since the thread initiates a discussion about someone NOT actually playing I believe my integrity is still intact. My legions of fans can rest easy, I will continue to post on all matters non-sporting, and this in no way compromises my mission to make the Irish Sports Forum, the best-informed forum on the Betfair site". Cool

Fair play to Shay for all his hard work and commitment - Probably the best keeper we've ever had. Pity Robbie wouldn't follow suit - It's 1/10 that he stays on for at least another two years!

despite a poor euro 2012 he,s still the best we have. Himself and Dunne still our best in their positions and should be encouraged to stay on.
Keane and duff were fine players but we have younger better players to take over from them.

Wallflower what the feck are you on about?.

Shay Given retired 3 years too late. He was a good servant but he was unfit and an embarrassment in the euros

Overall Shay was a good  servant for the Republic - a great goalkeeper and I can recall a few games he kept us in the running pulling off good saves.
Report kincsem August 14, 2012 9:37 PM BST
He was a great goalkeeper for us.  The Euros weren't the greatest: a bit unlucky at times; outclassed at others; a very difficult group..
He is up there with the greats for Ireland.

Looks Like Keane and Dunne are gone too.

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni now has doubts as to the international futures of Robbie Keane and Richard Dunne in the wake of Shay Given's retirement.

Just 48 hours ago Trapattoni expressed confidence his most senior players in Keane, Dunne, Given, as well as Damien Duff, would all return to the fold for the start of the World Cup qualifiers next month.

The quartet, in the wake of their Euro 2012 exertions at the end of what was a disappointing campaign, were given leave by the 73 -year-old Italian for this week ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Serbia at the Red Star Stadium in Belgrade.

In Dunne's case, in particular, that has since been superseded by a recent groin operation that will keep him out until the middle of next month at the earliest.

Trapattoni's words, however, were reinforced by assistant Marco Tardelli as the management at least sang from the same hymn sheet, but then came Given's bombshell late on Monday.

Although confirming he is available in an emergency, it is fair to say he is unlikely to add to his record 125 caps spread over more than 16 years.

Given's decision has now prompted unease in Trapattoni's mind as to captain Keane and defender Dunne especially.

Trapattoni said: "Richard sent me a message recently saying he would not be ready for the game with Kazakhstan because he needs a few weeks to recover from his injury, that the game was too soon.

"I answered him and said after this friendly, after he has recovered from his injury, we would review the situation, but I've told him we need him, it's true. He will let us know.

"As for Robbie, I've also sent him a text, but he's not answered me. I've checked my mobile.

"I will speak with him before I announce my next squad (in around 10 days' time for the Kazakhstan game).

"He needs to tell me whether he wants to come back or what he wants to do.

"We can decide after this game because it's important for us to look at the other players. We have (Shane) Long, (Simon) Cox and (Jon) Walters.

"After this game, and before the one with Kazakhstan, we can think about this situation."

It means the game with Serbia is now more than just a pre-season friendly as it could form the foundation for future squads.

In naming his side, Kieren Westwood now has to fill Given's shoes in being named number one, with Paul McShane, Darren O'Dea, John O'Shea - also wearing the captain's armband - and Stephen Kelly lining up in defence.

Across the middle is Aiden McGeady, James McCarthy, Glenn Whelan and James McClean, with Walters and Long in attack.

"This friendly match is a good opportunity to see some of the new players, to give them a chance to prove they can be part of the national team," added Trapattoni.

"I'm not expecting a great result or a beautiful match because we all know the players are at the start of their season with their clubs.

"But if we can get a good result, that brings confidence and builds the trust within the team.

"When you have young, new players their morale goes down after a defeat, so a good result would give us that confidence and trust."

With the uncertainty surrounding the big-name players, a result would certainly provide a lift for Trapattoni and his squad going into the September 7 clash with Kazakhstan in Kabul.

In a qualifying group that also includes Germany, Sweden and Austria, the Republic's chances of reaching the finals in Brazil in 2014 appear slim.

But a defiant Trapattoni said: "It's a tough group, but then the last group (for Euro 2012 qualification) was tough.

"We have to show what we achieved in qualifying for the Euro - we must keep the same attitude, identity and play."

Top keeper Given, kept us in games against both good and bad sides.
Report steeringjobnap August 15, 2012 5:29 PM BST
It is shambolic the manner with which Trappatoni has once again handled individual player dealings since becoming manager:-

- A Reid;
- S Reid;
- M Wilson;
- J McCarthy;
- K Foley

He supposedly didn't think Shay was walking 24hrs before he actually does?!

Utter nonsense.

A group of decent, honest, hard-working players were destroyed at the Euros; although technical limitations played a large role, the static, rigid formation, coupled with some downright bizarre substitutions, & a stubborn reluctance to admit we were getting it wrong on the line, meant we never gave ourselves a fighting outsider's chance.

Now, throw in the "vaunted" man-management skills (as above) and the FAI/DO'B are certainly getting their money's worth...

Much like the fans.

Tonight marks a new era without some legendary names in Irish football.

A huge challenge awaits in the coming years.

lol ya true WR, not doing too badly at all though, Trap playing 3 men in the middle of the pitch has it working better. Ireland could even sneak this.
