Anyone see the Sunday Times today.

1500 guests, TD'S and Minsters for Finance.

Rub it all in our faces McManus, you are some piece of work. I wonder how he thinks he is the salt of the Limerick earth with this carry on. I wouldn't dismiss him having a party but one with such lavish bash and Senior politicians he knew full well the papers would be all over it.

guy has money.he threw a party.so what?hes keeping thousands in jobs in ireland.only for him the irish nh racing scene would be in ribbons.fair dues to him.

Give me Michael O'Leary any day of the week.

Pays his taxes, doesn't play the big fellow by donating to this and that, and doesn't suck up to the great and the good.  And as regards creating jobs....no contest.
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl August 12, 2012 3:15 PM BST
Irish racing is barely surviving and what has this guy done for anything in this country......where does he pay his taxes, this is another disgrace and surely questions to answer for Noonan and co to be attending this sort of bash.....or whatever you want to call it.....Fianna Gael are just Fianna Fail there is the same difference......Galway tent moved to Limerick this year.............
Report kavvie August 12, 2012 3:19 PM BST
he contributes to what he thinks is right not to paying the bankers, where my paye goes.i wish i had the choice.
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 12, 2012 3:22 PM BST
No problem throwing a party but he threw a huge bash that he knew was going to come out in the media.

What does that say?
Report GANT007 August 12, 2012 3:29 PM BST
Michael O'Leary pays tax on his salary from Ryanair.....€1.27 million.
JP McManus is a tax exile who funds local sporting organisations, charities, hospitals, scholarships etc.......
Report dj876 August 12, 2012 3:31 PM BST
I think the modesty that he attempts to display in public interviews are insincere.

Ok he has 300 odd Nh horses in training in Ireland and GB and no doubt contributes massively towards the industry but he is taking some amount out between him ans his son.An untouchable, bigger than the game.
Report Rocketfingers August 12, 2012 3:31 PM BST
To be fair to Jay he is spot on with a lot of his argument, for me i could not care who McManus invited or what he held but really it's more onus for the likes of Noonan to decline than for McManus not too invite. One rule for the working class and another for the rich in this country.
Report Ozymandius August 12, 2012 3:36 PM BST
I don't understand the point you are trying to make, Gant

Report silvergreaser August 12, 2012 3:48 PM BST
What jobs did McManus ever create?, he buys horses to pursue a hobby, easy to buy horses when you're saving millions every year by been a tax exile, easy to contribute to charities when you're saving millions every year as a tax exile, basically its mere pocket money to this insincere tax exile.
Wasn't that party a who's who of goverment rogues, Ahern, McCreevy and that despicable Lowry?.

A fundraiser for Limerick FC.
Report bobbybocala August 12, 2012 4:00 PM BST
it was no fundraiser.....it was in memory of a dead horse......
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 12, 2012 6:27 PM BST
Yeah this job Myth is a bit bizarre tbh, its his hobby. He keeps a lot of horses in training not because he cares for the economy but purely selfish reasons which is fine.
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 12, 2012 6:28 PM BST
The evening started with a drinks reception at 6.30 as hundreds of cases of Dom Perignon champagne were cracked open for arriving guests who mingled in splendid sunshine on the immaculately manicured grounds of Mr McManus's estate.

"The bill for the drink alone would bail out a small country," said one guest.
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 12, 2012 6:30 PM BST
The gold-crusted invitations issued by Mr McManus and his wife Noreen requested guests celebrate the two horses' success.

Going to be an Annual event by all accounts.
Report silvergreaser August 12, 2012 7:08 PM BST
Gant if McManus didn't buy those horses someone else would've, the fact is every owner has to pay training fees which indirectly funds racing stables, he didn't buy those horses to keep people in a job but to have fun with his tax exile savings.
Report GANT007 August 12, 2012 7:15 PM BST
Plenty of yards in this country are glad he is having fun and paying his training fees.
Report silvergreaser August 12, 2012 7:24 PM BST
Fair enough gant, but it wasn't any philantropy on his behalf it was just a very rich man indulging in his favourite hobby.
McManus might be the most prolific owner, but he's buying almost recklessly in the hope he unearths the odd superstar and don't forget he has the financial clout to prevent other owners and potential rivals from requiring these horses, so in effect its a subtle form of bullying, its certainly not any bleeding heart for the plight of the lowly paid stable staff.

Does McManus give a christmas bonus to all the stable staff working in the stables he has horses in training with, sounds like those lavish parties could easily fund that?.
Report GANT007 August 12, 2012 7:46 PM BST
The staff are the responsibility of the person they work for........his fees should be enough but he is known to fund a session or 2.
Report silvergreaser August 12, 2012 7:49 PM BST
So we agree then gant he employs nobody?
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 12, 2012 7:52 PM BST
McManus own so many horses purely for Gambling purposes I would imagine.
Report GANT007 August 12, 2012 8:00 PM BST
I am sure he employs many people in various ventures across the country......in the racing industry he is keeping people in work.

So if he employs nobody you will surely agree then that the tax exile thing is exagerated.

Did yiz all see the report in the IT lately about the  following ?
It appears there's a company called Castlebeck which owns a private hospital Winterbourne View in Bristol.
A BBC Panorama programme uncovered a litany of abuse there including such as
-beating patients with autism and learning difficulties
-dousing them in water
-encouraging some to commit suicide
( 11 former staff are awaiting sentence after pleading guilty to the above)

A Serious Case Review group examined matters and found that ....

'Castlebeck appears to have made decisions about profitability, including shareholder returns, over and above decisions about the effective and humane delivery of assessment ,treatment and rehabilitation.
It is clear that at critical points in the wretched history of Winterbourne View,
key decisions about priorities were taken by Castlebeck which impaired the ability of the hospital to improve the mental health and physical health and wellbeing of the patients '

The investors said they were 'shocked and appalled and determined this will never happen again'.

Oh yes , who were the investors I hear you ask ...
Well they numbered among their ranks
Mr. D Brosnan
Mr. J Magnier
Mr. D Desmond and
Mr. J P McManus ...almsgiver and philanthropist extraordinaire. ( Ta-da! )

Is there a GAA club in Bristol that he can slip a few quid to in order to smooth things over?  Or perhaps send a few dud hosses to a trainer in that neck of the woods?

Brosnan is one man who needs to be put all his cards on the table. The role he played as the Chair of HRI and his association with Magnier et al doesn't look good. There ought to be a fair and impartial probe into this matter.

come on guys are u really goin to come down on the guy cos he is a tax exile?? im willing to bet most of people on dis forum wouldnt pay tax if they could get away with it including me...just cos JP is dealing with vast amounts of money shouldnt be a reason to knock him...would u prefer he pay his taxes and give nothing to the causes he supports?? he not breakin any laws livin abroad and if the truth be told we would all love to be as fearless a gambler as him
Report reb August 16, 2012 1:30 PM BST
pointone, fearless gamblers are generally not successful.
Report Arklearkle August 16, 2012 1:58 PM BST
Point no one likes paying taxes but many people who could opt out continue to pay. Why should other people have to carry an extra burden because some are unwilling to contribute. 99% of the population would prefer if he paid his taxes rather than acting the big man supporting "his" causes. I was always a fan of his but am turned off him big time because of this.
Report BI August 17, 2012 1:46 PM BST
You can only play the hand you are dealt by an owner and I don't think 20 grade 1s with four different horses is too shabby!! I wouldn't mind the Xmas cracker that comes with those wins.
