Take a bow , not necessarily in that order . Fantastic performance tonight from Rudisha , reminded me a bit of Herb Elliott , who was one of the most unbeatable looking athletes to ever grace a track .

Rudisha broke the world 800 metre record tonight , the only world record to be broken so far in the  Olympic athletics , and for the first time in history in an 800 metre race every athlete beat their previous best for the season or their best ever . Some race . And I am open to correction , but I think the bronze medal winner in the race shares the same trainer as the winner .

Brother Colm is David Rudisha's trainer  , he restricts himself to looking after 4 or 5 athletes only , takes no payment . No fancy dan stuff regarding training , no Team Rudisha or Team Colm , just hard work and common sense , allied to natural talent ( runners and trainer obviously , you cant have one without the other ) .

Colm has trained so many world championship winning athletes and Olympic gold medallists he has lost track of the number .  All of them have been associated with his school as pupils in some form or other .

The world has been watching , setting up training establishments willy nilly locally to train at altitude , but personally I do not think it is the altitude  , I think the success comes from local talent ( possibly genetic ) , beautifully handled and prepared . History will judge on that , but my money will still be on Brother Colm and his charges .

The natives down in Mallow should be raising a glass to one of their best exports tonight .  Brother Colm might be a candidate for "foreign Irishman of the year" if there is such a thing . He might grace a platform with Katie who will be "Irish woman of the year" after today .

Heart warming story / happening , particularly in these days where nearly everybody has the "whats in it for me" attitude . Sometime the nice guys come up trumps . And on the biggest stage in the world currently .

RTE had an excellent programme about brother colm the other night. A very unassuming man indeed but yet his pride in the athlethes shone through. His training methods raise some eyebrows apparently with sessions being mainly low key on a dirt track . They dont over do it unlike as Eamonn Coughlin says conventional training where it wo
uldnt feel right if you wernt physicaly sick afterwards.
He also prefers to stay at home during meets as he has his charges ready mentaly and physcially and sees no reason to detract from their achievements
