Eoin Morgan scores 120 not out in the latest 40 over match for Middlesex...almost twice the next highest score and at a rate of nearly 10 an over.
On song -he is probably the most potent limited overs batsman in world cricket.
A good place to be- but it would be enhanced if he could force his way back in to the England test side .
I reckon he would relish another chance to make it in tests-the highest form of the game.

Morgan will lift the mood of the entire country if he can get back into the Test team 
James Taylor got the recent nod in the middle order and did well so is presumably ahead of Morgan in the pecking order. Bopara was only out for family reasons so will presumably get one more chance, but he seems to be following in the Ramprakash/Hick tradition of gross under achievement. Bairstow also in the reckoning.

O feck, I was hopiung not to have to bear Gabby Logan doing her Spandau Ballet Gold routine tonight.
Ravi Bopara is average at best, but the fact that he has yet again come back into the reckoning is an indictment of Morgan's credentials at the moment. Morgan needs to improve against the top, fast attacks. If he's not being done for pace, it's impatience, going after one that he should be leaving.
England should give Taylor a good run in the team. They are desperately in need of a middle order batsman who can grind out an innings given that they already have lower order run scorers in the shape of Prior and Bresnan. Taylor may only have scored 34 in his knock against SA, but he stuck around for 154 balls. I don't think Morgan and Bopara have shown that they have the discipline to do that.
KP could be gone after this series against SA, so I wonder if, long-term, Morgan could be seen to best effect batting at No 4 in the Test side, where perhaps he would have a bit more freedom to play his natural game.

Great stuff from Morgs today as he hits the top score on either side - 73 at better than a run a ball -to ensure a win against S Africa that brings them back into the series.

It is wonderful to see one of our sportsmen shine on the international stage.
Might Strauss's retirement open up a slot for him in the Test side? One possibility would be for Trott to open, Bell to 3 and Morgan slotting in soon thereafter. I am not sure what young openers are out there.

In many of there are huge areas where hurling is all but non-existent...
e.g. in Cork , Limerick , Clare and Galway the western halves of these counties are Gaelic football strongholds and hurling has only a token presence.
I have nothing against hurling at all -but I can't see why -as Michael Cusack wanted - cricket could not have been continued as well. There could have been useful crossover between the two .

Cop on to yourself,some might argue cricket isn,t really much of a sport at all and can be dull and boring,maybe that is the reason it isn,t popular in Ireland.To say that Ireland is 'impoverished' by not playing cricket is utter rubbish.

Apart from the ideological "narrow guage nationalism " which railed against "garrison games" , the weather is a big factor . Cricket thrives where there is little rain , and unfortunately for those of us who do not have a grass diet , Ireland has more than its share of spillage from above . Suits the equine species and certain types of tillage , but its not great for cricket or tennis , or any sport where good weather is a pre requisite .
The English cricket team has always drawn on the best players from these shores ( GB & I ) to supplement the home grown "English shire" players , and logically that is OK by me given the standard out there in world cricket terms . Plus they have recently succumbed to an influx of players not born in UK . Ireland will never have the talent to muster a world class cricket team , there is not the infrastructure or interest in the game . Once upon a time there was a lot of cricket played in Ireland , essentially pre the huge interest now in our "native " games . But dont see much interest in it other than via media related factors nowadays , it is mainly confined to the large urban areas , and is of little interest to those in "traditional " GAA counties , most of which are by definition not urban .
Love cricket myself , especially at the top level , but it still is not the equal in spectacle of a good game of hurling , despite the fact that only about a third of the country can play it properly . And I can take a detached view of the various teams world wide without emotional involvement in their respective performances .
The IPL was phenomenal craic , and not a bad place to earn a few bob if you know what you are doing , worth a look for those uninvolved to date . Cheers .

I come from the home of hurling and love the game but I also love cricket,one is fast and frenetic the other is laid back and cerebral both are great games.I dislike the new forms of cricket for me Test Cricket is far and away the best where the object of a bowler is to get the batsman out not just limit his scoring.The great battles in cricket are watching bowlers trying to cod batsmen and the return of the spinner( down to Shane Warne ) has greatly enhanced the game.

Nothing against ye cricketing lads at all,everyone has different ideas about which sport they like/dislike,point of my last post was i disagreed that it was a loss to Irish society.

Lest anone accepts the term "cricketing lads " as descriptive of my sporting priorities , cricket is only one of the sports I am interested in , and despite my interest in it as a game ( and as a betting medium ) , I have never been a member of a cricketing club ( as against a lifetime GAA member / player / supporter ) . In total I have paid into about 4 matches in my life , all at "North" of Ireland , to see the Aussies , West Indians , Indians play Ireland . Long time ago , but they were stars .
The availability of cricket world wide is the attraction for me , plus the fact that a lot of different countries and sporting cultures find it fits into their curriculum . Did play it at street level in my early years , to a good standard , the guy who was about 5 in our ( street team ) pecking order played for Ireland many years later . Batting is easy , bowling requires different sporting criteria .
Michael Cusack of Hayes Hotel etc fame , was a cricket fan , think he hoped it might be part of the "Irish " sport scene despite its association with the then "establishment " . Glad to see an improvement in our world staus , but we will never crack the top closed doors syndrome without major upheavels in the game as it stands . Should put him in charge of NAMA . He has added 1 million to his net value in a couple of hours of batting recently . Wonder could he do anything for them ?
I think Porterfield is the guy who should be sent into NAMA -as he owes Ireland a whole heap of runs.

Catch of the tournament by Morgan in their Q/F (as good as) Vs Sri Lanka just now. Could end up being the game winner as Swann took another wicket next ball.
