Olympic medal all the way..just think ..Everyone around the world would Know who you are, Everyone knows in ireland who has won a medal at the olympics for ireland, yet people would struggle to name an all ireland g a a winning captain in a few years.

I'd rather a gold medal than an all-ireland, but silver or bronze? meh

Olympic medal of any kind, you become famous in your own country. I know i would get very emotional on the podium as the flag is raised and the national anthem starts to play.

Just think of winning an OLYMPIC medal, especially in athletics, the feeling of being at the TOP of that sport, instead of playing a sport that no other country gives a FOOK about(g a a)

on another note, rte's coverage of the olympics has been very bitter towards the ott english media for their coverage of english medal winners, YET when ireland have a chance of a BRONZE it's makes the main headline news on RTE!!Crazy

theres no question re the athletics  medals just some people brought up in a gaa obsessed county who have spent years working towards it would view an all ireland medal as being more important than an olympic one

Hurling or football All-Ireland vs a synchronised swimming Olympic medal ?

Answer to the original question is : it depends on the  Olympic sport concerned .

The trouble with the Olympics nowadays is that there are so many sports / disciplines involved , so comparison with a single skill sport such as hurling or football is a bit futile .

Anyone with either however , walks taller . Let it rest there .

AH, but if ireland DID win a gold at ANY event, then the interest would soon follow in that sport.

thats the point alot of olympic sports arent accessible in ireland due to economic issues and facilities..in any county in ireland if the county wins an all ireland theres a huge upsurge in interest its not just the olympics its confined to

Think I will nip out to the cycle shop and spend the £10,000 needed to be up to speed with the velodrome kids .

Or the 5k it probably takes to outfit a boat .

Point made already is that a lot of sports need facilities and equipment spend , so appeal is limited .  At least in Ireland most kids have access to GAA facilities at fairly minimal cost , the GAA can hold its head up in that regard .

Have not even mentioned the dressage horses , wonder how much they cost ( to buy and to keep )!
