The Irish Sports council have today confirmed that Drogheda United player, Shane Grimes, has been suspended from all sporting activity for eight (8) months backdated to the date of the offence on 11 May. This means he will be available for pre-season training on 11 January.
The maximum ban for the offence is 2 years but in instances where it is accepted that the player did not intend to take a performance enhancing drug, it may be reduced considerably as it has in this instance.
The judging panel determined that Shane did not intend to enhance his sporting performance but found him guilty of "carelessness".
STATEMENT OF THE PFAI
The FAI v Shane Grimes is one of the most important sports stories of this year. It showcases the hidden dangers that face all players and sports people if the proper education is not available.
Shane mistakenly and carelessly took an energy drink, Jack 3d, without checking its contents, innocently believing it to be more no different to any other energy or protein drink. These are regularly taken by all sports people and 99% of them are totally legal and harmless. However, a small minority contain banned substances and Shane was unlucky enough to find himself a victim of a combination of bad luck and an error of judgment.
Shane is a model professional and the PFAI back him to the hilt. It was an honest mistake and one which can easily be made if the proper education is not available.
While always disappointed when a player receives a lengthy ban from football, the PFAI accepts that the length of the suspension in this instance is fair and proportionate and thanks the panel for its time, consideration and well thought reasoning.
We are pleased that the Sports Council panel has noted that the anti-doping education regime requires improvement and we will be happy to help the FAI in any way possible. However, the main responsibility rests with the FAI to ensure that another instance such as this doesn't occur.
