Dundalk will be down to the bare bones when they take on Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm), in what is Darius Kierans’ first away game at the helm in the 175th league meeting of the clubs.
Already forced to reduce the first-team squad by five players, the Lilywhites will be without regular defenders Liam Burns, Eoghan Osborne and Ben McLaughlin for the short trip south, while Paul Walsh is also doubtful.
With that, Kierans is only certain to have eight players available that have started at least ten games from their 23 competitive outings this term.
The former Drogheda United boss has started life in the Dundalk dugout in fine form, with 1-1 draws at home to both Shamrock Rovers and Derry City.
Last Friday, Kierans was delighted with the “tremendous character” his players showed, with club captain Chris Shields heading in an 85th-minute equaliser shortly after David McDaid had given the Candystripes the lead.
And the 33-year-old is hoping that his side can “build on” those draws and find just their third win in 22 games in all competitions against Bohs, a period stretching back to 2003.
“We deserved a point in the end against Derry; I thought the players showed tremendous character,” Darius said.
“I thought there was a 20-minute period in the second half where Derry dominated and caused us problems.
“They hit the post and crossbar a couple of times in the game, but we also had one that looked over the line. We could have had a penalty too.
“We gave away a sloppy goal from our point of view but we showed great character to get back into it, and in the end we could have won it.
“But, all in all, I was happy with the point.
“Unfortunately, we’ve had to cut the budget again this week. It’s not a nice thing to do but the survival of the club is paramount.
“Everybody has got to stick together to see us through this difficult time.
“We have a few injuries going into Friday as well so it’s going to be very difficult. Dalymount Park is always a very hard place to go.
“Bohemians are in good form in the league. They’ve won their last two home games, including beating Shamrock Rovers 4-0, and before that they drew with Sligo, so that shows what they’re capable of.
“For ourselves, continuing to get results is going to be difficult when you’re letting players go.
“But hopefully we can go there and get something and build on the last two games.”

Last season, the sides met six times between the league and FAI Cup.
In the first encounter, in March, Dundalk were denied a late penalty as the game ended scoreless in the border town, before Colin Hawkins headed the Louth club to their first win at Dalymount Park in 18 years when he struck late in May.
With Ian Foster concluding his UEFA Pro-Licence course in England, Kierans took charge when Bohs visited in July but two late goals gave the Dublin side a 3-1 win.
That scoreline was repeated in September, four days before the sides clashed in the FAI Cup. There, Bohs advanced after a replay thanks to an extra-time header from Anto Flood following the controversial sending off of Dean Bennett.
This year, the only meeting to date came in late April when goals in either half from Ryan McEvoy and Peter McMahon gave Aaron Callaghan’s side a deserved 2-0 win at Oriel Park.
