I doubt that,Kerry are just as cynical as Tyrone,McGuigan shouldnt have been sent off, nothing more than handbags, the tackle near the end from the Kerry substitute was worse yet only given as yellow, wouldnt have changed the result.Kerry have good chance of being there in Sept, having feeling they'll meet Dublin/Mayo in quarter final,a Cork v Kerry final would be good, cant see Dublin winning back to back either way.

What about the kerry sub charging the elbow into mcmahons jaw in the last few minutes.....was this not a disgrace to gaelic football also....no....

Have felt for years that Tyrone are always prepared to win ugly , to heck with those who love the game and sporting occasions .  They have been involved in some entertaining games , and have won their share of honours , but there is a slightly cynical approach applied .  Hence they are largely unloved outside their nearest and dearest . Their domestic football can be very strident , maybe its hard to adopt a different approach at the higher level.

Did not see the game today , followed it mostly on radio .  Interesting to see what the papers make of it . Any chance they had disappeared when they had McGuigan sent off after 30 seconds on pitch , says it all , once was a very good player .  Like some others of advancing years , time for a clearout ?  Plenty of young guys in the county , well tutored , just need to change their attitude a bit . Its not all about winning . It should be about sport .

No worse then half the Cork team imo. Playing in Ulster automatically means if you win something it's because you played dirt football.

Yesterdays game was two formerly great teams both at the end of the road. I don't think Kerry are good enough to win Sam this year.
Report G Hall July 22, 2012 3:18 AM BST
I agree squigs don't think Kerry are good enough, but if that is Micky Hartes legacy then too bad, tyrone were a disgrace.
Report squigs July 22, 2012 3:22 AM BST
Well without making excuses for them, Harte has sadly had so much else on his mind over the past 12 months and Sean Cavanagh out for the season would hurt any side. I agree they were poor, a lot poorer then I possibly expected and can only really pick out Colm Kavanagh as playing well.
Report G Hall July 22, 2012 3:26 AM BST
yes perhaps micky should have stepped down before, but with the tragedy that has occurred maybe the county board felt they couldn't ask him to,and maybe he needed to stay on,but all in all tyrone let down gaelic football today.
Report silvergreaser July 22, 2012 10:50 AM BST
Managing the county team was probably a welcome distraction from all the goings on in Mauritius for Mickey, but there is no way he was as fully focused as he would've been in previous years, how could he be with such traumatic events taking place around him?.
Fair enough this Tyrone team are a shadow of their former self, but its hard not to think that external factors didn't play a major part in Tyrones totally disjointed performance yesterday. I don't think Kerry are great shakes but then again I don't think any of the teams left in the championship are any great shakes and that includes Cork, an all Ireland is there for the taking if some team wants to step up to the plate?.
Report G Hall July 22, 2012 11:54 AM BST
It is difficult enough coaching youngsters, and then having to find answers as to how certain actions on the field that are unacceptable can largely go unpunished.
Report Santry July 22, 2012 12:12 PM BST
Both these teams are in serious decline and what went on last night was an attempt to paper over this. Tyrones actions were unacceptable but the first bad challange came when Donaghy punched/palmed Tyrone keeper in the face and the ref took no action.
Report ballaman68 July 22, 2012 2:16 PM BST
While Kerry deserved their win, I think that this game highlighted all that's bad in the game.

Players diving and feigning injury, surrounding and harassing the ref, goading players into a reaction, off the ball hitting.

To me it stems from weak reffing or officiating in general, constantly we see the player give a pass and then get taking out of the game with what is a late tackle, this just leads to frustration and in turn the game just kicks off eventually.

as Santry said above it started when the ref didnt sanction Donahy when he shoved/hit the keeper, it probably didnt warrant a card but a yellow at that stage would have set the tone for the rest of the game.

Players pulling and dragging each other and grappling on the ground should be a yellow card just for being stupid.

Unfortunately for the refs , if they were to implement the rules as THEY would wish and control the game properly it would result in at least 4 red cards yesterday and the ref would never see another championship  game again.

there is no desire from the top to punish cynical play and until thats cut out the sly dig and the cynical diving and feigning of injury will continue.

what bugs me most is you see refs booking players and then they do a similar foul 10mins later and the ref just warns him, basically they cop out of the big decision because the powers that be wont back them up.
Report kerrybhoy July 23, 2012 12:22 AM BST
Agree with the original poster.  Tyrone have rattled Kerry and beaten them with some decent football but also some pretty rough tactics in the past.  Kerry have now decided to meet fire with fire and wont be bullied by the likes of Tyrone or Cork.  That is why a lot of games btween Kerry and these two end in the scenes we saw last night.  Kerry will go out to play decent football when allowed - Look at last year's AI semi and final. Plenty on here thinking Kerry are past it - must be cleaning up laying Kerry at 3/1.
Report Kelly July 23, 2012 1:01 AM BST
Only saw the highlights tonight , Kerry looked good for the first time in a while .  Some of their scores were outstanding .

Only one Tyrone forward scored from play apparently , well outplayed .  Brian McGuigan probably did not deserve to be sent off , but his action was juvenile in the extreme , always wondered myself why players have to "assert their presence " when they come onto the field . When I was still playing and a player attempted such assertion , I put it down to the fact that he was feeling inferior and wanted to make his mark . He was  immediately halfway to being beatable then .
Report steeringjobnap July 23, 2012 1:41 AM BST
When the offical in the middle is an actuary in a failed, now State-controlled bank, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in his ability to deal with the blood & thunder of Kerry/Tyrone.

The Curtin elbow tackle decision was a disgraceful example of a his failings to apply the letter of the law.

Indeed, given Cavanagh then raised his hands to his transgressor's neck in retaliation, there was scope there for further cards...

Nothing got to do with it at all, rubbish talk.
Report Kelly July 23, 2012 12:52 PM BST
What constitutes a good referee is a good debate topic . Most of the good/great players I know would have been good referees , have seen some of them reffing practice games etc , and invariably they instinctively knew how to control players and isolate players who were going beyond the bounds . The best refs communicate with the players , but respect comes partly from accomplishment ( and reputation ) in the relationship .

However as I have alluded to before over the years , the path to the top  in reffing is not strewn with flowers .  One brilliant player I know was interested in reffing after a very succesful county career , with medals to verify it , but when he investigated the situation he ( quite rightly in my opinion ) was not particularly interested in doing courses and turning up to ref juvenile ( and lower standard ) games for about 4 years before doing what he would have been excellent at , reffing at the highest level ( at which he played ) .

How many of the current ( and past ) top refs have played at the highest level ?  Takes one to know one  in my book , not the bottom line I know , but it must help .

The fact that a ref is an actuary , no matter where he works , should be a bonus given the discipline involved in attaining that level . Ref looked OK to me except that he got it wrong on the card levels for the 2 incidents involved .  Could argue that reversing the relevant decisions would have been more just .  Unfortunate that it affected Tyrone more than Kerry , Mickey Harte has had a bad enough run without fuel on the fire .
