This is slightly more edgy than what the Irish Times ran recently about great Irish excuses and other topics:
Here's twenty to start:
1. Obscene occupational pensions for politicians
2. The Croke Park Agreement
3. The social welfare culture
4. Failure to prosecute any bankers
5. Failure to prosecute any developers
6. Inability to fire an incompetent civil or public servant
7. Sinn Fein's opportunism
8. Teenage drinking
9. Failure to tackle tobacco and alcohol problems because of tax and duty consequences
10. Overpaid consultants
11. Failure to reduce the number of politicans by at least 30%
12. Local politics and the lack of integrity
13. Failure to abolish (or significantly downsize) the Seanad

This is a discussion about the Republic of Ireland, Richters. You live in Northern Ireland, a separate and distinct country. No doubt your sectarian remarks have traction up there, a State sadly renowned for bitterness and hatrid. Down south, West Brits such as myself happily coexist with the Natives. Some day, your country, will also evolve.

toby, i'm not having a go at all civil servants: its the protection afforded and out-of-date protocols that sticks in the craw. if you find protecting incompetence, jobs-for-life, endless borrowing to pay excessive salaries and pensions is ok then you are a fortunate man indeed.

Richters, I refer to this thread, rather than the forum. All points raised in this thread relate to perceived problems in the Republic of Ireland. A country in which I live in, pay tax in and vote in. None of which you do. So who is the real Patriot? Perhaps your issue with West Brits is one of envy?

ozy just for your information i pay more tax to the revenue in nenagh in a year than you probably have in your life......i have and still work all over the 32 counties of this island and thnkfully have never encountered any narrow minded bigots like yourself....its people like you who have the country in its current state....

That's what I call a brilliant list mainly because I am in almost total agreement with it,only one I would remove is 19, if a parent decides to spend money on their children's education they should be praised rather than expect the state to give them everything,before you ask sadly I never could afford to send my own to private schools.
Ozy in case you missed the past 16 years the North has moved from Crown rule and will never be returning. Like 90% of the Southern residents you are a decade or so behind in the mindset of the peace process. Something that is obviously beyond your comprehension. While the south continues to go backwards under the leadership of arrogant morns only Sinn Fein have any connection with the people who make up the backbone of this islands future. Continuing to ignore this is at your own downfall as they will be topping the poles very soon and they will finally come to power on this island and then and only then will this country get back some of its identity people like Ozy and co would love to see ruined forever.

i find it rather disturbing now that a couple of contributors to this thread have said that the irsh language disgusts them.....given the criminal dealings of former ministers,taoiseachs,developers and west brit bankers that led to the economic downfall of this country i would of thought the irish language would be the least thing that would disgust people......well then again it would be nothing new for the contributors to support the discrimination of anything irish....this really is a disturbing thread by an op and other sidekicks to push their anti irish agenda..
The Irish language should be optional in secondary schools for the leaving certificate as other languages are in my opinion. I don't see why it should be compulsory. It is only spoke in this country in small pockets of the country so why it is forced on people to learn (most don't learn anything though) is beyond me. All those hours in class for 5th and 6th year could have been used better to teach them a different subject that has a better chance of leading on to something in later life.
I wouldn't say it disguists me, i just think the language is sparingly used and should not be mandatory to learn in school.

it is almost like being asked to conform to a Yank expectation of what it means to be Irish. You know the gobsh1te sitting in the pub in NY in the eighties his eyes glistening with tears as the hat is passed round to collect money to buy guns for the 'revolution'. The Yank thought he knew what it meant to be Irish and what the Irish wanted.
Jump forward 30 years and we have Richters and God lecturing us from afar on what it means to be Irish...Sinn Fein are apparently the future and the Irish language is our salvation and anyone who disagress is labelled anti-Irish. It is a complete disconnect from the reality of actually being Irish and living in the Republic of Ireland.

Ozy what are you on about? Up here in the North Sinn Fein is despised by many Republican's since there decision to basically turn their back on everything they ever stood for.

If we have to make cut backs everywhere then 'the language' shouldn't be sacrosanct. It should be looked at realistically and compulsory in schools is plainly a bit bonkers, if it is to the detriment of learning other languages.

The tacit acceptance that the parish pump TD/Cllr or whoever has made a bagful of money by sometimes suspiciously dubious means, is alright, and sure, shouldn't he make a few quid for himself, what's wrong with that?
Another one that really grates me is certain GAA stars who are 'looked after'. I only wish someone could come along and look after me in a similar fashion.
Thankfully, I think the events of the last few years may be seeing an end to a lot of that. Cynically, I fear it has just gone further underground however.

The cost of living in the southern bit of this island compared to other jurisdictions. Again, though there are positive signs it is decreasing but things are still much too expensive.
As a result, everyone, and I mean everyone, is paid much too much for what they do/produce, from the CEO of the largest corporation down to the single mother on welfare.

For the vast majority, an utterly frighthening sense of entitlement; little concept of 'work' in the real sense, driven primarily by several years at college & global site-sighting, funded by Daddy's 'direct debit'.
