Anyone remember about a decade ago when jimmy swan was supposed to have had the €100,000 bet @10/1 on his 8 horses winning 6 races in a calendar year with an offshore bookmaker. It was all very strange who would lay those odds or volume of bet with no restriction to how many times they ran.I think he had horses with Steve Mahon and Kevin Prendergast ,does he have any in training now??

When Barney Curley started training he struck a similar type bet with Sunderlands and collected,i think Swan was trying to emulate his hero,he had some decent horses Arcaga and Baron De Feypo with Kevin Prendergast.
I remember Arcaga carrying top weight in a nursery in the now defunct Tralee,i met him that day seemed a nice fellow,he is a farmer from around Skryne i am sure Gant007 will know him.
Don`t think he ever got paid the bet think there were legal proceedings at the time and no Mr Wall was not involved.

Was such a bet ever struck or just a just a load of bu*l that gathered legs.........I wouldn't know him but I believe he enjoyed the publicity.

You could be right about the bet but it was the opposite with regards the publicity.
He was friends with the Lynch`s who are neighbours of his,i knew their father from years back, his son John owned horses in conjunction with J.J.Fallon his other son Gavin is writing for the Racing Post.

Wildman -The only legal proceedings in this case were taking against Mr. Swan.He named a man who had acted ss an agent for the bet,but the alleged agent had never met or heard of Mr.Swan.
I think Gant was right about him liking the publicity.
Who in their right mind would lay 10/1 on 8 horses winning 6 races in a calendar year with no restrictions on how many times they run??And even if u did get layed it would be closer to an even money bet and u definitely would not get 100k(or anything near)on.

Kavvie the man got away with murder,he was licenced but as usual hands were washed.
DJ876 was not aware of that case,it seems like longer than 10 years.
The bet does sound strange but Barney Curley struck an identical bet with Sunderlands about the number of winners he would train in a particular period, same type of rules horses had to be named and a specific figure had to be reached, but as both bets were subsequently landed you are right a mad bet to lay.

There wasn't a case just a threat of one.

THE £STG 1 million offshore betting coup by Meath man Jimmy Swan has amazed the gambling industry in Ireland, with senior figures claiming they would have only offered the Skryne farmer odds of even money on his horses winning six races this year.
Swan says he wagered £100,000 at odds of 10-1 to secure his big win.

Yesterday, he was at Fairyhouse racecourse and still hadn't picked up his winnings, according to his family.

The 34-year-old owns eight race horses and wagered they would win six races this year.

Last week, at Downpatrick, Prince of Tara won for the second time this season, completing the coup.

The other winners were Arjaga which also won twice, Baron De Feypo and Persian Life.

But senior industry sources say the big surprise was the extremely generous odds Swan managed to secure from an offshore bookie.

At first it was claimed that the bet was laid by Swan, and placed with a man known to him as Pat Flanagan.

However, Pat Flanagan, the former operations manager with Ladbrokes in Ireland, who is now Operations Director with betinternet.com has denied the bet was placed with him.

Now, Flanagan has s asked his solicitors to write to Jimmy Swan requesting him to confirm that he is not the person who acted as agent for the bet.

Asked if they would accept a similar bet, a leading bookmaker told the Sunday Independent they would take the bet on, but not for £100,000 nor at odds of 10-1.

"That's ridiculous odds, especially since the bet was apparently not on specified races and the horses could run as many times as the owner wanted.

The conditions of the bookmaker on this bet appear to be very generous to say the least. Special bets like this are very rare.

Even if someone came in looking to wager £1,000 on a bet like that, never mind £100,000, they would look at it very hard.

Special bets like that are usually for fun or for just a couple of hundred quid.

If a bet was not with one of the major reputable firms then it would be a very brave man to hand over £100,000.

"Jimmy Swan is not known as a particularly big punter so if he managed to pull off this coup then you would have to lift your hat and salute him. It was an amazing bet at unbelievable odds."
