------------------------- If it does turn up heavy it might not be ideal for the hotpot in the finale at Limerick,I know it has won on easy ground but doesn't seem to excel on heavy and looks a better horse on better ground,just a thought. |

yes your right about making more use of letherbelucky punchestown..i was surprised they ran her at 2m..when she clearly loved 2m4 on her debut..they got away with it lto in a poor race..but giving 7lb to the winner and the distance found her out..devo follow her tho when upped in trip?
they run a nice sort at gowran sunday zuzka,..but she,s up against thomas edison...who beat champagne fever..but both are fto over hurdles and the mullins horse could be a e/w price. |

i was at limerick.more bookies there than people.the game is dying on its feet.i seen a few turf club officials going up the lift full of joy..its gone apart from the few festivals.a friend of mine wanted to have a monkey on a 5/4 shot.he asked and the bookie nearly fainted with shock..

sad isnt it kavvie i know the weather wasnt great but when you see the crowds they get in england compared to here it makes it sit up and wonder whats going on,the evening meeting in england always seem to get great crowds,it dosent seem to matter the quality either,they must market the racing much better than they do here.

i was at sandown last sat massive crowds ...around the parade ring they have little plagues about what to look for in how fit a horse is .....little things like that are a massive help to ordinary punters....at brighton on tues night they had a commentator show all the headgear ..what blinkers , hoods , drop nosebands were....very entertaining and lots of people were very interested ....at goodwoods fri evening meeting , again massive crowds , we were brought to the start in a mini bus and shown how the stall handlers did their job , in all my years of going racing here i have never felt as involved as i did in england...they seem to value their customers ...at salisbury on sunday again massive crowds ..young families having picnics in the carpark ...lots of face painting for kids AND ADULTS...THE STRANGE THING WAS NONE OF THESE MEETINGS WERE SO CALLED HIGH GRADE ....NO GROUP 1S OR EVEN LISTED RACES YET THE CROWDS SEEMED TO FLOCK IN...the downside was the cost of going racing was high , entrance in some cases over £30...usually £20 /25 ...so maybe the powers that be just might get off their high horses and have a look at what needs doing to bring the crowds back ..

Good to see you back on here WR, always interesting to read (well most of the time
 ! Like a lot of spectator sports, cost is the big issue nowadays for your run of the mill race meeting-crowds down all over the place at GAA, rugby, soccer. Am still amazed how I was able to get to see the Arc a few yrs ago for around €8 and get into Belmont Pk (back in the early 00's for $1 or $2. Galway will no doubt be as mad as ever this year but there is so much more on offer in and around the city at that time that they could run piebalds and they would still fill it. |

a few of us had a chat last eve over a few pints on the very subject.it was 15e to get in.i think if you get people in they will spend money.the 15e is a major turn off for a lot of people.also there little or no advertising of metings in the local areas.lots of people with a mild intrest in racing didnt know there was racing in limerick yesterday.

thanks mckenna , i remember going to longchamp and been amazed how cheap it was to get in ...yes crowds dropping in most sports ....i was at the rovers v shels game on fri..as you can see i'm under tremendous pressure ,
 ...and was shocked at the size of the crowd ...i was at monmounth in 2007 for the breeders cup again i couldn't believe the low cost of entry.... galway is a holiday meeting for people to enjoy...as a purist its not my cup of tea ..but each to their own...let the people enjoy themselves i say.... |

Kavvie you are a racegoer and punter does the entry fee ever put you off,it never put me off,its the treatment of punters that does.When you drive into a meeting there is a phalanx of car park men preventing your progress,their mission seems to make you park as far away from the gate as possible,they usually succeed.When you walk towards the gate you notice all the car park spaces being preserved for the gentlemen who get in for nothing as you get your 15 quid ready you again notice the massive queue at the free gate.A race meeting is a great place to be,the atmosphere the expectation but the new deal where the punters at home in the betting shop gets a better deal than the man who races can`t be right,years ago it was the lower tax rate and the fact the racecourse was the only place you would see the races that got you there.
The lack of the double result on the track will cause mayhem sometime,i have a theory they don`t disqualify horses in Ireland because they are fearful of the uproar on the track plus the nefarious influence of Ladbrokes. |

wildman ,all valid points ..the constant bickering by gateman a sore point with me at many tracks ...funnily enough i met a wonderful gateman at goodwood last fri night , who was not only courteous , but when i told him i was heading to sandown the following day invited me to call on him , and he would let me park in the owners and trainers ...true to his word he did ,i have made the same points as yourself on many occasions only for them to fall on deaf ears...compared to the uk our admission prices are very friendly indeed...the bookmakers are king make no mistake ....

started off poor wildmanfromborneo , never backed a winner at goodwood i had 2 seconds ...backed opinion in the first at sandown , that started the ball rolling nicely ..went on from there ,went to salisbury on sun and started with a 9/2 winner backed hannons in the big race of the day at 13/2 it also won.. overheard a trainer tell an owner he fancied one of his at windsor the following night that won at 17/2 ...went to brighton on tues and backed baldings at 5/1 ...i left after that race ...as you can se e a profitable week as well as a enjoyable one ....great to see you're still fending off the riff raff ....keep it going young man....

People on here make it sound so simplistic.Population is the thing you must remember in this country.I read once that Haydock Park had 9million people living within a 1 hour drive from the front gate of the track.The fact that this country is on its knees is another factor.Even if you had free admission into tracks people would think twice about going.Do people really think a few face painters and mini buses going down to the starting stalls is going to draw them in.People dont have the money anymore for a days racing end off....

by purpose , its been a fact that everytime theres a resession people gamble more....the internet is now a huge outlet for same ...the point been made is . people do have money to spend ...go into any bookies shop in any major town or city to see the evidence...how they can be turned into RACEGOERS is the problem ...so enterance fees do have a part to play ....when you get people onto the racecourse the trick is keeping them entertained...so minibus to the start etc is all part of the entertainment...

the 15e admission wouldnt put me off but it might put people less intrested than me in the sport.ill be in killarney,galway,and prop the next few limerick meets..they were giving out free 5e off admission vouchers at the gate yesterday in limerick.but they have to be used by july 22!! good idea but bit shortsighted?why not leave it open ended?

I knew that but what worries me is the disadvantage the track punters have,a horse will be disqualified and the punters that paid in won`t get paid but the lads that stayed at home will,hardly fair.

Can i paint u a scenario WMFB and i hope u get it. On course a 3 horse race two horses around 11/10 and the outsider 10/1.One short priced one beats the other and gets thrown out and you expect the layers to pay out on both.Hav'nt been racing a while but i think theres lots of space in the betting ring if you want to kick start this concession.

I accept that point but the fact still remains the betting shop punter is getting a better deal.

by purpose you are totally right but the fact remains that you would get paid in a shop on the double result and also if it drifted from 11/10 to 5/4 you would also get the price..thats the way it is and the shops especially pp have such high volume that they can absorb it..

I doubt very much that PP could offer that concession if they where only trading on 7 races per day.As the saying goes theres plenty of ways to skin a cat and the betting shops have any amount of them.
