I applaud the Irish fans for the backing of their team and singing a lovely song that  has become an football song for the Irish fans. I see nothing wrong with the song , its alovely love song about Micahel being taken away from Mary.

Agree totally with opening poster. Never could stand Keane but by god he's so right with these comments. I think they should look further afield and consider an all Ireland set up, it would broaden the pool of talent. I think if we have another 10 years of not qualifying as will do NI, then perhaps both Football Associations will begin to see sense. I doubt they will sooner.

What's more we are either regressing or standing still while the 'newer' European countries are coming on leaps and bounds.

In hindsight it was a major effort by Trappatoni and his team to get this lot to the finals. Look at who are not even there - Belguim, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, Georgia, Hungary, Norway,Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland & Turkey.

Just got back from shop and on short cut on way back i noticed an Irish tri-color with Ireland printed on it, it was tattered and a little muddy and stuck in the ground via a stick pierced through the middle. It sunk my heart somewhat, i picked it up and on patting it down i see it had a knot at top where somebody had it tied around their neck. I couldn't just leave it there though so i now have it untied and in the washing machine.

The former national captain is starting to sound as if he has lived in England long enough to qualify for the prawn sandwich brigade of supporters

You have to be a pretty cold-hearted man to find fault with the Republic of Ireland fans after their lung-busting effort to show that they could emerge victorious in the supporter stakes, if not on the pitch, where the team was pulled apart in a ruthless and, if we're being honest, not particularly unexpected thrashing by the world champions Spain in Gdansk on Thursday. Perhaps the kind of man who could deliberately get a Manchester City rival carried off following a disagreement some years earlier and admit as much in his own autobiography. Or Roy Keane, to be precise.

Keane's criticism of the attitude of supporters who have travelled at great expense while earning nothing but praise from their Polish hosts in Poznan, Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia is as miserable as it is nonsensical. In fact, it's more akin to the views of the prawn sandwich brigade whom he once lambasted at Old Trafford for their lack of support than it is to your average supporter.

The point is that his view is synonymous with the disconnect between supporters and players in the modern age. That there are still fans out there who are willing to belt out spine-tingling songs in support of a limited and below-average bunch of players, in an age when crowds are fuelled by a consumer expectancy made worse by the wealth gap between those on the pitch and those in the stands, should be lauded.

Those who agree with Keane probably go to very few matches, immerse themselves in cold, calculated tactical analyses and have probably never experienced the thrill of leaving a stadium after a defeat knowing full well that the fans of the team that won left the ground frustrated that their support wasn't a patch on yours.

The Ireland fans who returned to Sopot from Gdansk on Thursday night were still in high spirits despite the defeat. It may be a cliche to say they were loud and enjoyed a drink, but cliches and stereotypes exist because they are largely true. It's frustrating to hear them repeated over and over again but it doesn't mean they're not pertinent, even though many viewers would like a more original soundtrack.

Perhaps Keane has lived in England too long. Perhaps he's forgotten what fun is. Perhaps he should straighten out that scowl and head down to Montecasino in Sopot and loosen up a bit by belting out Fields of Athenry with the fans himself.

As I said , as a tv football pundit he is entitled to his opinion about the team .... But to criticise the fans for cheering and singing is way out of order ...I wasn't happy with losing 4-0 but I wouldn't dish the Irish fans for supporting ..afterall they are "supporters"

I've been too plenty of matches, but not too an Ireland match in a long while, i admit. I found the prolonged sing song a bit irritating. I wouldnt have minded a gesture from the fans in the last few minutes but twenty minutes of that fields of athenry dirge was just too much.

Football is not all about winning, the fans expressed an attitude towards life that is rare. This is our characteristic, to enjoy in success or failure, never to despair in times of adversity. It gave an impression to all who watched that the Irish spirit i still one that is to love life, live to fight another day. Keane walked out on his people and now lives in England. He has no perspective on Ireland and the spirit of its people anymore.

You'd think the fans would have the decency to thrash some of the Polish cities or something serious to give you lot something to moan about i mean like it's awful that they where supposting their teams and singing songs, ain't it??

The one that really annoyed Keane was in Holland......the players got pizza and the FAI goons hammering the credit card in a fancy restaurant..........It took Keane to walk out in Saipan for future teams to have a professional setup.......Maybe something good might come out of this and the FAI set up proper coaching centres around the country.......start these young lads off at 9/10 and help them all the way through till some are ready to go to England .

The fields of Athenry is a song sung in times of adversity. The ballad is about a man who stole food for his starving family in famine times and is being sent to Austrailia after getting caught.

I think it was quite poignant really, what were the people to do? Totally out classed in every way. When you are beaten like that its hard to be anything other than accepting of the result. They sang to give themselves some degree of comfort after a night where there was little solace to be found on the field.

Gant after training there was sambos ready for the players, the players then were told to go up change and come back down for their meal. Keane wanted his main meal straight away and went up and ordered pizza and never came down for his meain meal. This is a little white lie Keane told and i know this is fact.

I think the set up has become more professional since then......It's sad it came to all that to get the players properly looked after.

I'd agree with Rocketfingers here, the idea that in the year 2002 they were getting just cheese sandwiches before games sounds a fallacy to me.

Very ironic statement, the langer was sent home as a result of strong management, fair play to Mick McCarthy.
The fans who were singing the other night are the same fans who gave him the lifestyle he is accustomed to. Biting the hand that feeds you comes to mind.

I agree with Keanes view on the players.

I don't agree any criticism of the supporters.

I cant see where Keane criticised the fans. He lashed the players coming on for interviews and giving the routine line of how great the fans are to cover their own woeful form. He said fans needed to change their attitude and ask more of the team....

He criticised the Manchester United fans for not getting behind the team and then criticised the Irish fans for not demanding more.
In every tournament some teams will do badly,why anyone should think Ireland should be immune to a bad one is a mystery to me.

thank god we're out so I can stop listening to to the patronising tosh of how great our fans are...I was out there last week for the first game and found the singing at the end of the Croatia game cringeworthy, we'd just gotten hammered for christ sake, I for one dont celebrate total mediocrity..these are highly paid professional footballers and their performances were embarrassing, fair enough we were always going to struggle in that group but to concede 9 and score 1 goal is way below even the lowest of possible expectations... Roy Keane was spot on when he said these guys consider themselves to be top players and that they are a million miles from that

i was there for the croatia and spain games and the singing at the end of the spain game bored the tits off me after about 2 mins. was in a bar the night after watching the england game and a kid about 10 asked me was i at the game, i said yeh they were sh1te. he replied, the singing was good though! i felt like slapping him.
