JUSTICE Minister Alan Shatter is under fire today after referring to Derry as Londonderry.
His comments were made in the Dail when he was putting through legislation to extend anti-terrorist powers under the Offences Against the State Act.
He was listing out numerous recent attacks on PSNI officers and other security personnel when he made the gaffe while outlining some of the reasons why the powers should remain.
The act was introduced after the tragic Omagh bombings in 1998.
Mr Shatter said: “Two pipe bombs set off in Londonderry on January 19, 2012.”
His comments quickly went viral and are trending on Twitter.
The name of the Northern Irish city has been the subject of an ongoing debate but the common reference in Ireland is Derry.
Its a dead giveaway the stroke city thing . Always feel sorry for some of the local media presenters who have to bite their tongue everytime they reference it on air .
I suppose some British people have problems with some of the Indian cities , lost track of them myself from my geography lessons in the fifties , although the IPL has helped to redress the problem in identifying who lives where and what it was termed in colonial ( and after ) days .
As for the African nations ....

I can't believe people would still get into a tizzy about this . I noticed Newstalk yesterday trying to whip up a storm by playing the clip about half a dozen times between 12.30 and 1.30. You would think that someone had insulted the Prophet or queried the Holocaust. I presumed the Minister was reading from a list of events prepared by the PSNI but whether or which -so what ? Typical that the reaction concentrates on absolute trivia and ignores the reality the list referred to -the continuation of murderous and destructive activities by republican maniacs who seek to kill and maim in pursuit of a crazy hopeless cause i.e. unity through terror ...but (and how grateful must we be for this ?) take great care to refer to Derry while doing so .

I'd be more concerned with Spain's borrowing costs/Sunday's Greek election/the break up or not of the Euro zone.
One thing here that did anger me this week. That they'll be no inquiry over planning in this country. I'm sure there are many well heeled amongst us sleeping sounder over that. Just multiply what the Mahon Tribunal came up with looking at part of Dublin and spread that around the rest of the country. The rezoning scam - one of the biggest frauds ever in this country although the national media doesn't seem at all interested in it. I wonder why.
