The 2nd major of the year kicks off on Thursday with the Olympic Club in San Francisco expected to be a tougher test than Rorys win last year. Dont expect too many under par here with length & accuracy on tight fairways and unforgiving rough the most important attributes on this course.

My two against the field are:

Jason Dufner 30's here - two time winner on tour already this year, is accurate off the tee and although putting can be suspect under pressure am hoping for a good run from him.

Justin Rose 34's here - Again near the top of the stats for driving accuracy and if he can get the putter hot may be his time to capture his first major.

May add Luke Donald later if he drifts a bit the next few days.

Good luck.

Only thing is i really fancy Westwood. Never backed him for a major but just think this week its set up for him. May back him tomorrow.

If Dufner wins it would be my biggest win ever, have been backin a bit ew every week for months from 100s down to 33s

Dufner 100/1, 80/1, 66/1, 50/1, 33/1 all ew
Rose 33/1
Byrd 110
Kuchar 33/1
Furyk 50/1
Hanson 85
KJ Choi 125/1 ew
Davis Love III 190, 125/1 ew
Thomas Bjorn 150
KT Kim 850
Sang Moon Bae 550

Course sounds seriously tough, straight driving off the tee looks to be essential.

Also did a bit of research on the course (very proud of myself) and www.pga.com had Par of 71 with the 1st hole as a 517yd Par5. So I backed winning score of 285+ (284 would be par) at odds of 15/8. Only to discover that for this tournament, the first hole is a 520yd Par4 which means 285 would be +5 for the tournament. Cry

Luckily I traded out of Rory at 19 , early on when he was still looking interested and competing hard for a score .  All went pear shaped then , missing greens all the time .  Cant understand how ANY pro ( and Rory is top 3 in the world which makes it even worse ) can miss a green from 79 yards with a wedge in his hand . It should be about 6 feet max from the pin .

Globe trotting is not helping his game , needs a spell at home working on basics which made him so good . Current product is nowhere near his standards .
Report Deplasterer June 15, 2012 8:25 AM BST
As predicted tough conditions, Pod had 2 4 putts, a 3 putt and two duff chips and still finished on the premises at +4!Tiger's price is crazy at 2's on a course like this especially as he plays the tough holes 1-6 tonight on bruised greens tonight. Happy with Rose & Dufner though.Tongue Out. Anyone who makes the cut this evening can't be ruled out on this course.
Report pa lapsy June 15, 2012 9:54 AM BST
Brutal going alright,1/2 dozen players under par, mcilroy +7,Donald+9 says it all.Started to dream yesterday as at one stage J. Bohn was 2 clear, anyway did his job and book is almost level.Still a lot in with a shout, as you say, other than Woods,Rose,Watney,Toms and Mc Dowell all have obvious chances.
Hoping today C.Wittenberg +1 @1000 can do the same as Bohn, out early at 3.26 will be an interest.
Report db1974 June 15, 2012 10:15 AM BST
What is the cut line?

Leaderboard says "Top 60 + ties" which would mean the cut is +4 but the black line on the leaderboard is after +6 which implies that this is the cut line. +6 would only make sense if the "winthin 10 shots of leader" rule was in place but I thought they did away with this rule a couple of years ago
Report db1974 June 15, 2012 10:17 AM BST
Found the answer

This is the first year that the 10-shot rule will NOT be in force.

http://www.majorschampionships.com/usopen/2012/news/Some-players-surprised-at-change-to-US-Open-cut-rule.cfm

So McIlroy is actually 3 shots from safety at the moment
Report Deplasterer June 15, 2012 10:25 AM BST
Db, don't be surprised if the cut is +8/9 after this evening, possibly level par leading at end of day's play.
Report db1974 June 15, 2012 10:30 AM BST
I appreciate that but the official leaderboard is giving out incorrect info (from what i can see). It says McIlroy is 1 shot outside the cut and Mickelson is 1 shot inside when actually they are both 2 shots worse off than that.

They are both available to lay at 3.5 to make the cut

+5 seems the average score yesterday, assuming its the same conditions today, given that the -4 are in would it be feasible to say the cut could be +9?,think it will be 7-8 myself, fairly rare for both phil and rory to have two bad rounds in a row(tough course too though) anyway that would be my take on it.
Tiger was very clever with his play yesterday shunning the driver,as deplasterer say 1-6 very tough and if he gets through them tonight in par +1 ought to have a great chance.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 15, 2012 11:01 AM BST
I persume Tiger is out later today? If the wind gets up again like yesterday and dries the greens out it will make it a lot tougher but he looked in near total control of his golf ball yesterday which is a good omen for his supporters.

Just saw comments above about Harrington's bogey at the last .
The point is(as he stated) -he figured +2 was not good enough so he had to go for birdie and shoot at the tricky flag.
Yes -he didn't get it right but if he just needed a par he would almost certainly have got it from the middle of the fairway by playing to the safe side of the green.
The ball plugged in the sand because it came in from a height.
He was tactically correct in what he did.

Huddys keep your powder dry for Pod in Portrush in less than 2 weeks time, Rory & Gmac will ensure his price is decent & has a good record there in his amateur days, although draw/weather bias will have to be taken into account before betting.
