Ian White of that most august and venerable auction house, Whyte's since 1783, told us on Morning Ireland that the people most prominent today at fine art auctions are (early) retirees from the public service. I am so pleased to see the Government do their bit to keep the market going and that the obscene lump sums are being put to good use. In a curious way this could be a clever way to recapitalise the banks as, presumably, most of the art is being sold by delinquent debtors under pressure from their bankers.
This faux pas was followed twenty minutes later with an interview with a reformed drug addict, let's call her "Maria", and could be themed "How to meet the president" or "What price a life?"
Maria has been a drug addict for 25 years or so and, in that time, has been blessed with bringing four misfortunate children into the world-the first when she was seventeen. She has depended on the State throughout this time, probably without realising it, and St James' Hospital (endless medical problems), the Corporation (provided housing and hostel accomodation & "me fla!"), social workers (children seized and in care), police (arrests, violence, theft and general anti-social behaviour) the Courts Service and the DPP's office and a kidney transplant from (possibly) King's Hospital in London. This after a lifetime of visits to various state-run methadone clinics where she was able to buy contraband bottles of urine to ensure her supply was uninterrupted.
The good news is that Maria has found God thanks to the good people of Tig Linn (sp?) in Sligo and this, no doubt, has cost someone a fortune in care and maintenance that saved her life (yet again).
She is now a strong follower of the Bible and has penned a few poems which has led to her redemption and the meeting with Michael D.
Meanwhile her balance sheet is in the red and stands at circa €5-10m in deficit (possibly much, much more if her succession of seriously delinquent boyfriends (one died and she cant remember how) and poor misfortunate children are added to the hotpotch) to mother Ireland and the exchequer but the decision to "bail her out" with taxpayer's money over a twenty year period (are you listening Sinn Fein?) can be deemed a success. And we still have our own ESM still available should she fall off the wagon-its called the HSE these days.
John Murray pandered to the "redemptive" element of the narrative but not a scintilla of personal responsibility questioned.

Couldn`t agree more with the opening post.
Personal responsibility has been abandoned,it is always someone elses fault and should misfortune befall you you sue for compensation.The courts encourage such behaviour by giving vast swathes of cash for even the slightest inconvenience,all criminals when explaining away their money come up with the classic "claim against corpo " and despite claimants saying whilst sueing the HSE its not about the money their hands are always out.
People are afraid to speak out,emotionalism is used against them,the new scam is Autism get your child diagnosed with Autism and you can sue, get special treatment and a myriad of financial benefits,the vast majority of itinerant children have Autism naturally.

I expect one bullet would sound a single 'bang' rather than the double bang suggested by the bastion of humanitarian consideration above. Perhaps the executions would take place in a cavernous venue rich in reverberation and thus create the auditory illusion of a second bang?

The vast majority of autistic traveller children are already trying to qualify for the Olympics.A study among travellers has shown that amazingly water and a bit of deodorant can do wonders to cure autism,also a blocked nose would do the person alongside the affected one no harm at all.

The 1% is there have been a number of parents who have kids with conditions such ADHD (Which are not a walk in the park) who might have their children diagnosed as ASD or autistic.
The 99% that shows you up as ignorant is that a diagnosis takes years to get and to have any chance of assistance from the state requires a diagnosis. Care available upon diagnosis is still to be found wanting in this country and has to be fought for. Our family fought to get my sibling a school place, travelled in day after day across the city just to have our sibling schooled. We lost all Speech and Language therapy because we had the nerve to pay for extra Speech and Language therapy privately. We are no wealthier then an average family but when it's your child you will make every effort for them.
They have the communication and emotional skills of a 2-3 year old and they are approaching adulthood. That we have t speaking from my own perspective caring for a member of your family with severe autism is a tough job. A job that we would always do and while my parents and sister all juggled work and university around.

Myriad of financial benefits: Once an Autistic child hits 16 they can get the same rate as the dole; just like a child with Downs syndrome or a child who has the misfortune to be blind, quite different from a fit and healthy Anto who couldn't be arsed working.
before the age of 16: They can get DCA, DCA at this point is €300 per month per child, it was less when my sibling was younger, but that does not cover much more then essentials. Raising an Autistic child will cost you much more and people don't go into it for the money.

Interesting you should mention public sector pensions which are a particular pet topic of mine!
When assessing the value of a defined benefit pension for tax purposes a 20:1 ratio is used by Revenue.In other words a pension of €50k per annum is valued as a pension pot of €1m.In the private sector it would require a pot of approx €2.5m to purchase an annuity to give a pension of €50k p.a. at the average retirement age of the public sector.So firstly the Dept. of Finance are deliberately undervaluing the pension pots for tax purposes of the public sector.
However it gets more interesting.A private pension pot has a cap placed on it for taxation purposes of €2.3m.If a pension fund exceeds this a tax has to be paid which can exceed the tax free lump sum a person can normally receive on retirement of €200k.If the tax due exceeds the tax free lump sum the balance must be paid immediately even though the person may not have the funds.
In the case of PUBLIC SECTOR pensions only this tax can be spread over 10 years with no interest payable.Clearly this was introduced when senior civil servants realised that even with the extraordinarily generous multiple of 20 being used{it should be nearer 40} they would be in the net if their pension exceeded €115k.
So in effect in addition to the extraordinarily generous packages received for in many cases less than a full working life the public sector pensioners receive
1.A generous multiple for the valuation if their pension for tax purposes.
2.The ability for the really high earnings pensioners to spread out any tax due over 10 years at no cost
3.No .6% private pension fund levy
4.Pension based on final benchmarked retirement salary
The recent early retirement packages offered has placed a noose around the neck of the current and next generation who look as if they will have to cope with the massive debt run up by the privatisation of bank debt and the massive budget deficits of recent years.

Squigs there is an interesting article on page 16 of the Irish Times by Victoria White,she has an autistic son and says she receives too much and feels guilty.Are you saying there are no dodgy diagnosis,no unworthy receipient.Your use of the word hearsay is classic legalese designed to stifle debate,your constant use of the word sibling sounds callous to me.

My comment about it being unpatriotic to sue is a general one as are most of my other points,your points are valid but to deny there are unworthy claimants is just plain untrue,there is a new condition called mild autism and this seems to be designed solely to extract money,doctors write what their patients want when it comes to qualification for some grants but they seem to forget that this money is diverted from somewhere else.Like everybody else i have had some misfortune but i never felt the need to sue and whilst your last line is a worthy one it is an aspiration and if the state is broke it can`t fulfil this right.

Your last post seems to have been removed for some unknown reason,it was in no way offensive just a reasonable stating of your position.
Again I think you have this a bit wrong and are labelling all Autisic spectrum disorder diagnosis's as Autism. It's a common thing btw. Mild autism refers to Aspergers syndrome or ASD and maybe some cases of ADHD. It isn't new and most diagnosed with it will be sent to normal state education and disability claims nor DCA will be paid in nearly any case based on Aspergers. (I'm sure there must be an exception somewhere but I've never heard of it.)
I don't want to feud here, My position is set in stone based on nearly two decades of living with what can be a terrible condition at times and I got upset at the suggestion of me being callous. Also in the last post it was 100% civil and any possible ill feeling from earlier is totally forgotten about.
