National dailies reveal Saturday-only sales for first time

New figures have revealed the extent to which UK national newspaper Saturday circulations far exceed sales on Monday to Friday.
The Guardian more than doubles its sales on Saturday – with 377,268 copies a week in April, versus 177,876 Monday to Friday - according to the figures from ABC.
The Sun’s Saturday edition is the best-selling newspaper edition in the UK with 3,009,981 sales on average in April, versus the 2,507,860 average Monday to Friday sale.
The Financial Times sold 88,357 copies a day on average last month versus 113,887 on Saturdays.
The new figures come as every national newspaper – with the exception ‘i’ and the Daily Star Sunday - reports sales decline year on year, may of them severe.
The UK’s newest national newspaper – The Sun Sunday – looks set to settle down above the 2m sales a week mark after launching at the end of February.
It sold an average of 2.3m copies a week in April, down 5.3 per cent month on month.
The biggest circulation fallers in the daily market in April were: The Independent (down 45.4 per cent after stripping out bulk copies), The Guardian (down 18.9 per cent), the Financial Times (down 17.8 per cent) and The Times (down 12.3 per cent).
In the Sunday market the Star Sunday remain the only title to have hung on to gains made following the closure of the News of the World last year. It remained up 56 per cent year on year at 482,225 copies a month.

Guardian is a fantastic Newspaper even if its a bit too left for my liking.
mail for me..its Saturdays edition is excellent, i know its a right wing rag,..but its a far better read than the other tabloids,..just for the record..i vote labour..and always will!
The Guardian is a fantastic paper. Sports coverage is top class especially for Football. James Richardson is a hero.

I haven't even looked at it in over a year tony i'd say. They do a good yarn i'll give them that but the distinct lack of any journalistic ability is a bit of a killer for me. If I was to read any red top it would generally be the Star (mainly cos a Georgia Salpa appearance is a 1.01 shot

Big Guardian fan but still hacked off that they axed the excellent Music & Film supplement that came with the paper every Friday, was a million miles better than the one u get with the irish times. Good sports coverage too, greg wood is the best racing journalist imo though doesn't get the scope to do himself justice
Definitely agree with that GJ. Greg Wood deserves a more high profile post. Very good writer.
The Independent is a superb production ...and its spin-off(?) ...i...is an amazing piece of work for only 30c a weekday and 40c on Saturday.
Saturday's Irish Times is my Sunday and the Guardian's app is brilliant.
The Economist gives you on line access to a fantastic database and is fully available in audio format for those on the go. Their on line app 'intelligent life' (as they might say, "a periodical") is also free and exceptionally good (all you need is the scarce resource of time)
There's little in the way of opinion (apart from tipping) in Saturday's Post so I leave it alone, Sunday being my preference.
Finally, although' a critic of the Irish Field it is informative and has improved steadily although could grow a pair of liathroidi. My latest quibble is that having Kevin Blake's blog available on line before Saturday diminishes the print edition.

Don't think I've ever bought an English paper in my life, unless Irish version of Sunday Times counts.
The Economist is essential reading. Nothing else comes close.
Financial Times on Saturday is a substantial read ....if only one had the time to get around to it .

but thats were i do most of my reading..the times on sunday is also top class,..i find the indi..and guardian,..are good at what they do...but as i say my daily is the mail although my politics are the other way..is there anyone else who is like me who buys a paper but is politically the other way?

More a fan of the Economist and FT Podcasts more so then the paper formats. I find the Journal.ie app to be the best app to get news on the move.
I don't have any real political party faith as such but I would generally be right leaning in my viewpoint. I can look past the Guardians left influence pretty easily though. I think quality journalists tend to rise above the divide when discussing business and other idea's I would be interested in.
The Economist is a great shout too. Underappreciated publication in this country.
