By Sam Griffin Extratime.ie

Shelbourne defeated Monaghan United 2-1 on Friday night but the match was overshadowed by allegations of irregular betting patterns.

Speaking to Extratime.ie after the game, both Alan Mathews and Roddy Collins revealed that they were made aware of irregular betting patterns on the game by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) prior to kick-off.

Shelbourne manager Alan Mathews said: “Fran Gavin (Airtricity League Director) came into the dressing room before the game to tell us that there were irregular betting patterns on the game.”
Gavin also told Monaghan United boss Roddy Collins of the irregular betting patterns before kick-off.

However, when asked, Collins said he had already been made aware of the issue before the game, when a girlfriend of one of his players texted the player.
Collins said: “I knew before the game. One of the players had a text from his girlfriend saying that there was irregular betting on a penalty. But I didn’t know."
He later revealed that the girlfriend worked in a bookmakers.
Collins said that he asked Gavin what exactly the betting was on but Gavin said he couldn’t say.

Collins, speaking separately from Mathews, said: “I think it’s something that has to be investigated before you could make a public statement."
He went on to say that he had spoken to his players about the issue before the match and warned them that if any players were involved in any such matters they would face serious consequences.
He said: “If anyone ever tried to get involved in something like that I’d bring them straight to a police station and I’d make sure they never kicked a ball again because that for me is the lowest of the low.”
When questioned on whether or not he was aware of any Monaghan players were involved in the betting he said that he did not know but that he would be extremely unhappy if any were: “If it is the truth I will be absolutely sick to the pit of my stomach. You don’t want to hear about it in the League.”
Neither Alan Mathews nor Roddy Collins were aware of how much money could have been involved or how or where the irregular betting had occurred

This is a nothing story and i mean nothing. I'm sure what actually happened will come out in the days to come. Total overreaction in some quarters.

Cupwincook beting on the LOI is quite big actually, if you wanted to get money down it's possible to get a hell of a lot down just need to know where to go.

Rocket, I find that hard to believe.

If you are talking Asian backed "2 flys going up a wall" scenario, that's not realistic to the regular punter.

I can recall, top of the table matches that weren't covered on TV generating millions of turnover on here about 4 or 5 years ago, now it's mickey mouse money
Report Rocketfingers May 5, 2012 10:08 PM BST
To be fair compare Irish horse racing turnover compared to 5 years ago and it's way down as well not just LOI betting, i would say everything or most things are down stright across the BF board.
I know one of the major firms rate the LOI as it's 5th biggest league in terms of what it takes on games which is quite something and take more on it than Serie A.

Anybody can open a West Ham's sponsors account and at kick off you'll get 4k on they might cut the price by 3 to 5 cents and then you can get the same on straight away + you have 1.5k to 2k on per live bet and that will recover quickly.

But ok i think i know what you're saying and that is true but what i'm saying is that if you wanted to organise something you can do it no worries, it might take time to get everything together but it can be done esp if you have a broker, i would think you could get €100k on a LOI match. IMO we have not seen it (The fix) yet in this country but we will probably will because the conditions are perfect for it both in the league and in the country itself.

There is no way I'm believing more money is taken on LOI then Serie A anyway. Particularly in the wake of how much money was going on for the fixed games in Italy.
Report Rocketfingers May 6, 2012 1:44 AM BST
I said just one firm to be fair and they're Irish, but the LOI is v popular for betting esp in the summer as nothing else to bet on for footy fans although this year we have the Euro Champs.
Report trooper thornton May 6, 2012 8:05 AM BST
Wasn't there an issue with the Shels v Sherrif FAI Cup game last year as well....... some tasty bets landed on Sherrif who were then thrown out of the Comp for playing an illegal player
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2012 10:14 AM BST
There wouldn`t be 100 grand bet on a League of Ireland match never mind anyone being able to get 100 grand on,i understand Anaglogs Daughter reluctance to get involved but surely in this instance with his background in bookmaking he can explain to the gullible who might actually believe Rocketfingers the truth. This is not a slur on Irish soccer its just these specialist markets are notoriously weak so when Rocketfingers puts up some team in a Northern Ireland soccer match no normal punter can get anything on.
The biggest problem all the good gamblers have is not the finding of winners but getting on.
Report Rocketfingers May 6, 2012 11:01 AM BST
You're a fool, an acquaintance of mine got a 5 bet figure on a Northen Irish match before on a handicap, you'd get much less on that league than ours. Also for the market you're speaking of, for a team to get a peno. You'd get little on that market. You don't understand how gambling on football works. You think it's like horse racing it's not you just need to know the right people for getting money down.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2012 11:11 AM BST

Report squigs May 6, 2012 12:13 PM BST
RF you mention that a major player considers the league of Ireland their 5th biggest league you omit to mention that you are referring to an Irish company. It is certainly a relevant point but even they I have my doubts.

The big game next saturday between Sligo and Rovers, you have only 5 markets available on Paddy Power. Crewe v Southend has 59 markets available on Paddy Power at the moment.

It suggests Paddy Power aren't mad about taking such big money on LOI football outside of the Irish shops which represent only a fraction of Paddy Powers buisness. I know people who can get decent bets in shops circa 5k between 4 shops on match odds but LOI is small fish apart from a hardcore of punters.

SBO don't have prices on the game on Saturday, I don't think they should be missing out what is clearly such a big market.
Report GANT007 May 6, 2012 12:27 PM BST
It's fairly under the radar of the majority of people and a few quid on a certain market would be copped.......It could end up like Irish greyhound racing and near impossible to get a bet on..........A badly organised stroke.
Report Toto82 May 6, 2012 12:50 PM BST
I just want to stand up for Rocketfngers here regarding the stakes accepted on LOI matches.
I bet only with asians and a few hours pre kick off you can get €3000+ on (limits are clearly displayed), then the odds fall a notch, then you bet again etc etc, do this with several bookies... however you wont be able to get 100k on at anything close to the odds of your initial installment of the bet due to the odds being cut ever time the limit is reached.
I provide LOI tips to a syndicate who bet several thousand per bet on asian handicap markets so I know what I'm talking about
Report GANT007 May 6, 2012 12:56 PM BST
Did you have anything on the penalty the other night.
Report Rocketfingers May 6, 2012 1:15 PM BST
Squigs i'm just saying what i was told mate, but came from a very good source and i have no reason to fib. I don't believe that's anyway of measuring the popularity of markets either as you're not comparing like with like, as apart from playoff games LOI match with that firm usually has more markets available iirc. The SFA Cup final between Hearts and Hibs has only 3 other markets attached to it. Of course in non Irish bookmakers the lower English leagues are more popular last week League 2 prices were available by the firm you just mentioned midday on the Monday the LOI matches were the follwoing day and were avialble 2 days before the SPL matches were made avialble.

These playoff matches are anything but run of the mill English lower league matches, Normal ones usually have the same limits on Match days as the LOI and are never up this early for the following week either but these games are massive matches and broadcast live in the UK and other countries to how many million? So there is a much larger appetite for them than normal. You'll also see double lines appearing as the norm on match days for LOI with the Asians quite soon and you never see that outside the champ in England but again that's no way to measure a market. I understand it must be difficult for people to comprehend but i think outside horse racing if you added up all Irish sports it would probably not be a 100th of what is bet on the LOI if you include the worldwide market.

I have to get ready for the races.
Report sirwinalot May 6, 2012 4:50 PM BST
Asian trading system doesnt restrict winning customers. It uses them as marks and trades their view to the book's benefit.

Winning punter gets laid his 5k stake, the firm then has a multiple of this in the inter-firm market.

Turnover on the exchanges and the irish firms limits are no indication of the volumes being moved in asia.

Let me start by saying I know absolutely nothing about soccer -a few years ago a youngfella I know stopped me on the street and told me that a certain LOI team couldn't possibly win because most of the team had been doing E in his house the previous Saturday night until the early hours. It's a small country and a few team members going on the beer or something like that is hard to keep quiet.
About 4 years ago the local LOI team was in disarray at the start of the season and this was known
by local soccer heads. One local character had a 3 grand bet against the local team in the first match of the season. The 3 grand went on with one independent bookmaker-I'd think it might be possible to get 100K on using agents.
Report squigs May 6, 2012 10:56 PM BST
I assume no one here bets in six figures so we are all basing this on opinions. But I had a thought

LOI is quite low key soccer in South East Asia. It's uefa coefficient does not have it in the top half of leagues in Europe. Taking your Sligo Rovers Rocket, 100k would be near double what the top earner at the club gets a year and the club itself took in €1.3 million last year (2011).

Sligo Rovers prize for winning the FAI Cup was €60,000

In theory you could win more then the club do for winning a match.

I struggle to fathom how Asian bookmakers will willingly want to take 100k on an individual match with crowds of a couple of thousand and little tv coverage but come Euro 2012 that if the likes of Chronicle want to lay off similar size bets they have to go to Pinny instead of these Asian havens.

It makes no business sense to offer such wagers.
Report GANT007 May 6, 2012 11:08 PM BST
The match in question here only had 800 people at it by all accounts. A chap in longford told me their match had about 300 at it yesterday........they are top of the table.....Fair play to people getting on huge wagers on these games.
Report Cupwinkcook May 6, 2012 11:10 PM BST
I would agree with what your case, Squigs.

Except for the fact that Asians have such a huge appetite for betting that nothing would surprise me in terms what they would bet on.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2012 11:29 PM BST
Asians bet on their own sports mainly and if they had bookies willing to bet in any size on Irish sporting events they would be cleaned.
Am astounded at Eddie Batt as i thought him an insightful and intelligent poster.

Old gambling adage   if they can talk don`t bet on it.
As i have said before you don`t understand gambling or betting, you neither gamble or bet.
If there was a dart match down your local do you think you could get big bets on ?
If you could would you want the bet ?
Another old gambling adage never bet more than they are playing for.

Could see the Asian markets buzzing for the snooker as it is a growing sport out there but they would have no interest in League of Ireland football, the fantasy punter on here thinks you can get 100k on and that is more fantasy.
