Wow, gotta be more to this story Devil

GAA:  Tipperary hurling was in shock tonight with the news that Lar Corbett is to walk away from the county scene. The 30-year-old informed manager Declan Ryan in person and is believed to have circulated a text message to his Tipperary teammates to make them aware of his decision.

The 2010 hurler of the year, who scored a hat-trick of goals against Kilkenny in that year’s final as Tipperary reclaimed the All-Ireland after almost a decade in the wilderness, had yet to return to training with the county this year.

He was named in the Munster interprovincial squad for the recent challenge match against a Tipperary selection in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland, but did not feature in that game either.

It is understood that Corbett will continue to line out for his club Thurles Sarsfields but his decision to quit the Tipperary set-up will send shockwaves through the entire hurling community. He met with Ryan this evening to confirm he was calling it a day after letting his teammates know that he was unable to commit himself fully to the cause by sending a group text message.

His withdrawal comes shortly after boss Ryan cut seven players from an extended squad. Corbett now becomes the second player from last year’s squad to announce his intercounty retirement, following in the footsteps of fellow 2010 All-Ireland medallist Benny Dunne.

Laugh another 30 ish county player calling it a day...i'd say he was been tortured doing the circuit trainingWink

Shocked when I heard it this evening. Lar seemed as fit as a fiddle, and if the training schedule was too much for him, I'm sure they'd have given him some leeway.

It does seem like there could be more to it.

Lar will be missed. MischiefGrin

Work commitments seemingly.

Yes he will be one of them players that will come out of retirement at the business end of things later on in the year.

Put it this way, Tipp just make the All Ireland final - Massive buzz around the county - Lar returns, a little shimmy for his business! (Incase you dont know he is heavily involved in the running of a bar in Thurles).

Hope Ryan gives him a new pack of Tayto, or Walkers, or was it Hunky Dory's ? the minute I heard he was new manager I knew, trubbl here, or as George Hamilton say's " danger here",in any event have it all to do to take the McCarthy cup back from the purring cats.
Report silvergreaser May 13, 2012 8:49 PM BST
The guy wanted to take a break from the game and he's hounded back most probably under pressure?, he wanted out for a reason why couldn't they just leave the chap alone.

pressuring people against their will is a typical GAA trait, inter county and club.
Report kingrat May 13, 2012 9:05 PM BST
did u play inter county sil?
Report silvergreaser May 13, 2012 9:19 PM BST
no kingrat, club only lets just say I wasn't dedicated enough and the lure of the pub was hard to resist.

The Tipp management are happy as are the fans of course but is Lar Corbett happy?, he didn't step down from the Tipp panel for nothing he had his reasons and should have been left alone.

I'm been presumptious of course but its not fanatsy to think that he was put under big pressure to return to the Tipp fold.

I'd say he is a fit enough lad and doesn't take a lot of work. I've heard he didn't particularly care for emptying the tank in the muck in January. It's understandable and he has the class to set his own agenda, fair play to him.
Report kingrat May 13, 2012 9:52 PM BST
he made a huge mistake, putting needless pressure on himself, never sud have came out in feb with retirement although i think  he meant it .sud have went for tempory break, freign injury, any story, and went quietly.u c,below the surface hes now compromised with some in the dressing room and definitly with ryan.if it goes belly up in the championship, the tip crowd will slate him and he knows it
Report wildmanfromborneo May 13, 2012 10:37 PM BST
The Tipperary crowd will never slate him,we all understood what he was at and were confident he would be back for the important games,we now have a fresh player.
Report GANT007 May 13, 2012 10:53 PM BST
King Lar will not get slated win lose or draw. Great to see one of the biggest stars in the country back. Bonfires in Tipp tonight.
Report kingrat May 13, 2012 10:56 PM BST
yeah, tell corbett that, after last yr allireland when he was held scoreless,he was verbally abused by so call tip supporters.
Report Rocketfingers May 13, 2012 11:08 PM BST
Lar Corbett was abused big time by the Tipp fans, most of the Tipp fans were only up in Dublin for the day and maybe some some got over excited or nervous being a built up environment.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 13, 2012 11:11 PM BST
That is nonsense

a slap on the back is only a foot away from a kick in the arse!!
Report neill d May 13, 2012 11:14 PM BST
To be fair, it was said for years that many of the Tipp crowd thought that Corbett's injury problems were in his head. He has only been a marquee player since 2009 at the earliest. He used to get barracked from the terrace
Report Rocketfingers May 13, 2012 11:15 PM BST
WMFB this is true my cousin plays hurling and he told me this, he obviously hard it in hurling circles.

Report neill d May 13, 2012 11:18 PM BST
Brilliant player though, glad he is back, Tipp forward line needs his pace, skill and elusiveness.
Report kingrat May 13, 2012 11:22 PM BST
fact
Report GANT007 May 13, 2012 11:23 PM BST
A hardy lad like Lar will do his talking on the pitch. High profile players handle handbags from the terraces.
Report neill d May 13, 2012 11:28 PM BST
Yeah i'd never have thought it was a problem to him. The reason he improved was that he stayed relatively injury free and the good quality ball and fluid forward system Tipp devised suited him to a tee. Best first touch in the game I'd say, kills it dead every time.
