From BBC Sport

Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook has asked for permission to speak to Accrington Stanley.

The League of Ireland Premier Division club say that they have told Stanley that they want to keep hold of the 44-year-old Liverpudlian.

The former Stanley midfielder turned down a move to St Johnstone in October.

League Two Stanley have been looking for a new manager since John Coleman, who had been in charge since 1999, left for Rochdale.

Cook, who started his managerial career at Southport, has won two FAI Cups and one League Cup in his four seasons in charge at the Showgrounds.

"Sligo Rovers can confirm that Paul Cook has asked for permission to speak to Accrington Stanley over their vacant manager position with a view to his long-held desire to one day return to England to be closer to his family," read a club statement.

"Accrington have been informed that Paul Cook is under contract at Sligo Rovers and we have no desire to see him leave the club.

"The management committee has been working with Paul in recent months to assemble an excellent squad of players and it is our intention that this should continue at this critical time in our pre-season."
