Interesting keen leader.
What about Monaghan? Personally I would consider them to be one of the contenders for relegation along with Westmeath and Louth. I think all three will be gasping for air. Your point about Sunday could well have major bearing on who takes the drop! NFL Fixtures Round 1 Sat 4th & Sun 5th Feb 2012. Div 1: 5/4 Laois 15/2 Mayo 4/5 (Sat) 11/10 Dublin 15/2 Kerry 10/11 (Sat) 11/4 Armagh 8/1 Cork 4/11 8/13 Down 13/2 Donegal 7/4 (Sat) Div 2: 4/6 Meath 15/2 Monaghan 6/4 (Sat) 4/6 Derry 15/2 Galway 6/4 1/2 Louth 15/2 Westmeath 2/1 8/13 Kildare 15/2 Tyrone 13/8 (Sat) Div 3: 8/15 Longford 15/2 Offaly 15/8 Evs Roscommon 15/2 Tipperary Evs Evs Antrim 15/2 Sligo Evs (Sat) 1/2 Wexford 15/2 Cavan 2/1 Div 4: 4/5 Clare 12/1 Waterford 5/4 25/1 Kilkenny 50/1 Wicklow 1/500 15/8 Leitrim 7/1 Limerick 8/15 5/1 London 12/1 Fermanagh 1/7 |

The pick outs for me are in Division 4.
Clare 4/5 Limerick 8/15 London 5/1 - Considering London beat them last year in championship. Bookies taking their McKenna Cup campaign into account maybe. I know it would be ridiculous to pay any attention to last year with the situation Fermanagh were in but it is hard to ignore the value of London at 5/1. Massive price, home advantage they will be up for it. Might not be as strong as last year but they have had the benefit of playing in the FBD leagues which I think will stand to them. Peter Canavan is a winner and they are well tipped to gain promotion. It will be nip and tuck I reckon. London are a great price has to be said. For an interest.. Down Donegal (Draw 13/2) I expect a low scoring affair with a bit of luck it will end all square. |

I'd be cagey enough about them,
Clare at 4/5 are entitled to be slight favourites with home advantage, but I couldn't see there being much between themselves and Waterford. Limerick were beaten twelve poits in the McGrath cup by a UCC team that then got beat eight by Tipp, I know Leitrim have lost players but they're fairly sticky above in Carrick and it must be dawning on Limerick that their chance of beating Cork or Kerry and securing that Munster title has all but evaporated. I'd fancy Fermanagh, even at that price, to exact revenge on London, they were in turmoil when they met last year, and have had the whole winter put down being told at home how bad the county was last year against London. Canavan has given them a big lift and they'll be anxious to set the record straight. I'd fancy Mayo to get the points at Laois, Cork to beat Armagh, Derry at home to Galway and Tipp at odds against v the Rossies. |

Meant to say the odds I posted above are courtesy of Paddy Power.
I just think London are worth a small punt at 5/1 for an interest f-m. Going on last year and good reports coming from the exiles. They never had a prep like this year, coming into the league with a rake of games under their belt from playing in the FBD League for the first time. Yes, Fermanagh look a total different side already compared to last season. Players seem to be playing for the jersey and Canavan is one man that wears his heart on the sleeve, he will have them well drilled but I reckon this league opener will be tight with a point or two to spare. I think we could see a big league campaign from Clare footballers. I've backed them at 8/1 two places for the league. I know they are two tricky calls. You could get a good handicap or winning margin bet on Cork. Armagh are minus the spine of their team with the absence of the Crossmaglen few. Well I think they could give the Orchard a good fleecin'. |

The 4/9 the 2 dutched is indeed free money - i have taken Westmeath to finish bottom personally tho at 15/8, i see they are 13/8 now ansd i stil think thats a fair price in what looks a match Louth have bein goin ok in challenge games and won well against Roscommon last weekend Think Louth will win this weekend and if they can win one of their other games that should be enough to keep them off the bottom as i struggle to see Westmeath winnin 2 games |
|
By:
BJG,
Just read in a local roscommon paper that the rossies led by 1 15 to 1 7 at one stage in that game v louth. Made numerous changes after that and ended up losing the game. Challenge games are notoriously bad guides. |
|
By:
Louth are without a host of regulars for Sunday's league opener against Westmeath.
Mark Brennan, Shane Lennon, Declan Byrne, Aaron Hoey and Jamie Carr are all on the injured list. |

even though it isnt easy to get the information in time i think the value is betting on the half time/full time market as soon as you discover the results of the toss as with this time of year some teams will be playing with and against gail force winds in each half.

Sure it's the same in July ![]() You really need to have someone at the game for this. Even for Championship games on tv, the info comes through too late. Have been screaming at the tv on occasions, wanting them to confirm which way the teams are lining up. Always found that the market is gone by the time it is clear, either because of throw-in, or because it is passed the start time and books have suspended. Leitrim v Roscommon last summer a prime example. |

Are Cork a bit big at 1/3 against armagh? They have a strong team named. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an early first half blitz from them to kill it off and be done with it.
|
|
By:
On the hurling front I fully expect Westmeath to turn Kilkenny over at 15/8 with Powers.
I think a double with Wexford at 4/7 is a very good bet for today. |

Oh, was going to say that I really liked the New England Patriots for tonight but I gather we are not talking about that National Football League

Cork let many a man down for an accumulator - the one you would think that be your cert! Refereeing was atrocious, anyone know why Paul Kerrigan was sent off? I just felt the Ref was bias towards the home team.
Looking ahead... I like the look of Antrim (13/8 above with PP.) To me that is a glorious price. Down in Tipp I know but I think it will be neck and neck the whole way, 13/8 good value. Also, Clare at 3/1!? Does anyone else think this is a bit overpriced?! They will have to go to Enniskillen, no easy task coming out with a win but they do have a game under their belts. Derry will be looking to get revenge over Tyrone, the game of Div 2 for me. Beat at home by Galway last weekend so if they have any ambitions of promotion it's make or break for them. Likewise, Kildare. I was at Navan on Saturday evening and if Monaghan had any prolific/natural out and out forward they would have came away with a win in my opinion. Tommy Freeman for an example greatly missed. Happy with two points, and I expect us to pick up another pair at Mullingar on Sunday. Good record against our friendly neighbours so hope to continue that. A few pints in the 'gar will go down well after! My Round 2 Predictions: Div 1: Mayo v Dublin - Mayo Kerry v Armagh - Kerry Cork v Down - Draw Donegal v Laois - Donegal Div 2: Westmeath v Meath - Meath Monaghan v Kildare - Kildare Galway v Louth - Galway Tyrone v Derry - Tyrone Div 3: Cavan v Longford - Cavan Offaly v Roscommon - Roscommon Sligo v Wexford - Draw Tipperary v Antrim - Antrim Div 4: Waterford v Kilkenny - Waterford :-) Limerick v London - Limerick Carlow v Leitrim - Carlow Fermanagh v Clare - Clare |

The Monaghan shooting would have made you weep on Saturday.
Our clown of a manager is wasting Darren Hughes and the sense behind playing Paul Finlay in the full forward line completely escapes me. Hard to see a win against a pretty match fit Kildare side. |
|
By:
Agree D V,
Finlay is such a waste in there. He is some man to deliver a pass and I could not understand why he was hid inside. I'd say when McManus gets back, Finlay will be pushed out around the half forwards. Clerkin to come back too. |
|
By:
Glad to see a thread open on NFL. Think there's some great value to be had in the football.
My punt for the weekend is a Donegal, Cork & Meath treble. Pays roughly 13/10. Must win game for Donegal if they have any ambition to stay in Div1. Down full back line v slack last weekend (Donegal failed to capitalise). If the balls sent in to Cork full forward line direct I think they ll have too much firepower even without Kerrigan. Meath to beat their neighbours without the Garrycastle boys. On a side note think MUFC will do business against scousers. TIR CHONAILL ABU! |
|
By:
good analysis..westmeath only have 2 garrycastle boys so they wont be that weak as a result and will love playing their neighbours.specially in mullingar.id go along with the other 2 for sure..
|
|
By:
Finlay was played in the full forward line for most of last year thefly. Scandalous decision making from the bench given that he is our best (only) playmaker and distributor.
McManus is unlikely to be back before the championship from what I hear. If the same **** Clerkin is back that performed last year, then he is a liability. Since he put the armband on he has been shambolic and is a licence for the ref to produce cards. A decline was what I expected after the managerial appointment last year, but it looks bleaker than I would have feared. Very difficult to see us getting a result against Kildare. It is even more baffling that it is being played in Clones rather than in Inniskeen which would be a more suitable ground. |
