RTÉ has today (Tuesday 20th December) announced that Betfair will sponsor RTÉ Sport’s coverage of Horse Racing across RTÉ Television, RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ.ie. The deal will be for an initial six month term.
RTÉ Television broadcasts 23 days of live Irish racing coverage each year featuring the great racing days of all the major festivals, with live television coverage also simulcast on RTÉ.ie within the Republic of Ireland.
The major festivals including Punchestown, Galway and the Christmas Festival at Leopardstown will be broadcast live, as well as the biggest races of the year: the Ladbrokes Irish Grand National, Hennessy Gold Cup, Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes and the blue-riband event of the flat season, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
In addition RTÉ Sport covers the key race meetings from the UK, including the Grand National, Cheltenham and Epsom.
Betfair Spokesman Barry Orr commented today: “Betfair is delighted to join forces with RTÉ Sport in sponsoring their cross media racing coverage. As long time supporters of Irish racing, it is important for us that this key investment will also help secure the ongoing coverage of the sport across RTE. We look forward to working with RTÉ bringing comprehensive racing coverage to their audience, racing fans and punters alike’’.

Some of us Irish cant get terrestrial RTE , no matter how hard we tried in the past . I can only get it via cable , and its blacked out often for sporting occasions .
For a nation with a lot of the best horses and trainers and jockeys in the world , not just this year , but regularly , RTE have not been great in its attention to racing . For a long time the only sport they were covering well was soccer , guess there were a few soccer heads in the upper echelons . Even GAA had to struggle with presentation despite the blanket interest in games exhibited in every hamlet in Ireland ( clubs everywhere with great facilities ) .
Maybe these days the penny has dropped , although the media speak leaves me a bit cold . Well done to Betfair though .

so whats the difference they're only showing the same races they always show anyway, so they got a new sponsor, no big deal really.

Hopefully it will means the presenters (ie Brian Gleeson & Tom Lee) debunking the myth that you should "go racing" to get the value as I would hope Betfair will insist on some measure of what their prices are at the off so punters can compare them to the shocking prices available at the track.
Exactly db and hopefully betfair will have Gleeson tell the viewers that a betfair sp of something like 3.6 is actually 6/4 to people that can actually win on the thing.3.6 for all the losers equates to 6/4 for any winners.Suddenly the on course prices may not be that bad after all.
If it means Tom Lee and Johnny Ward on our screens than may I be the first to say thank god for that.

db1974, I always laugh at Brian Gleeson to "Go Racing" cos the only time you see him racing is when he has to work on it.
He never socialises at a meeting as far as I am aware.

John Francome said he would never go racing unless he was paid to go.I didn`t like him before and i liked him less after.
Unless the coverage improves, who cares who sponsors it?
