While I was racing at Navan last Sunday, I was there with my assistant trainer's cap on rather than my bookmaker's one. Derek Rocks is Bar One Racing's on-course representative, so he was on duty on the pitch.

My son Michael, who trains down the road from me in Castlebellingham, had two runners, and that's what brought me to the track. Neither horse featured prominently, but they came home safe and sound, which is the main thing. I love to get involved with the horses and the daily business at the yard.

Michael does the vast majority of the work, but often he'll take a Sunday morning off and I'll go around and feed the horses for him. Horses are a way of life that we are all very passionate about, so it's lovely to be involved in a hands-on capacity.

The crowd at Navan was really encouraging ahead of our flagship racing sponsorship at Fairyhouse this weekend. It was an amazing turnout -- in excess of 4,000, I gather.

When I spoke with Derek on Monday morning at our head office in Dundalk, he said that we generated over 700 slips through the course of the day. In the context of the current climate, that's a huge number.

The only other place that we'd turn over more than that is at Galway in the summer, so it was fantastic to hear. That said, it was the sole bit of good news that he had, as the bumper, which was won by a 25/1 shot, was the only result to really go our way.

Before heading to the office on Monday morning, I made my daily visit to Michael's yard at around 7.0. I like to check in there to see the horses and find out what he might be running over the weekend in advance of sitting down to the day job.

He has two in at Fairyhouse tomorrow. Sweet Shock lost its form earlier in the year, but he was a pleasing third at Punchestown recently, and Mooney's Cottage could also run well in the Irish Racing Yearbook Bumper. He was second first time out two weeks ago, so fingers crossed now that he might win for us on our big weekend.

Bar One Racing also sponsors Crossmaglen Rangers football team. This is our fifth year involved with them and they are a wonderful team to be backing.

I suspect even many inter-county teams could learn a thing or two about attitude from the Crossmaglen boys. They are just so focused on winning and it's impossible not to feed off the positive vibes that they bring to the table.

opportunity

Still, I'm a National Hunt man myself, so to have the opportunity to promote what is the biggest pre-Christmas jumps meeting means a lot to us. The weather has thwarted the Fairyhouse fixture over the past few years, but we should be okay this time.

If we got a nice, crisp winter's day like we had last week, that would be just perfect, as it promises to be a cracking card on Sunday.

On the ante-post book, Bog Warrior is the horse that we've seen most interest for in the Drinmore Novice Chase; we opened at 5/2 about him, but we've trimmed him to 13/8 favourite in recent days.

For most of the week, everyone at the office has been busy tailoring the competitions and specials that we are offering to promote Sunday's card.

The BBC's Gary Wiltshire has come over for a few days to do a bit of work with us, including at Dundalk's dual meeting tonight, as he is a great man for the dogs.

He will sign copies of his book in our shops over the next two days, too. Hopefully, that will entice people to the shops, because business on the street is in freefall.

About six months ago, I took on a number of shops that were in trouble with the intention of trying to salvage something from them, but I've had to close them. The turnover just wasn't there to break even, let alone make a profit, so it wasn't feasible.

Thankfully, we've not had to lay our people off, but the staff realise the difficulties we are faced with, and have rolled up their sleeves accordingly. We are all eager to weather the storm -- although we would appreciate it if Sunday's Grade One card at Fairyhouse didn't have to do likewise. That's a road nobody wants to go down again.

Any bookie will take a decent bet. As long as you punt with them,. If you punted daily or a couple of times a week and asked for 3300/100 e.w they'll accomadate you but go in once every couple of months just coz they're going top price and have 3300/11 e.w you'll be giving that short shrift.

Was up and was down in a few minutes.

Not sure how many people would have been glued to page 637 or what is and would have acted in the 3-4 minutes that it was there.

Analogs Daughter, why shouldnt anyone only bet with a bookmaker when they are top price something?? What you are really trying to say is bookies will lay mug punters doing their plums and no-one else.

I have yet do see a rule in any bookmakers office stating "you must take the 3/1 with us when its 7/2 elsewhere otherwise when we are top price a horse we have the right to refuse your bet"

my question was why should punters not seek out the best price on their selection???

oooh hark at her ....you just stick to cutting and pasting ffs..

It seems to be everyones saying to me when they are beat boo hoo hoo.

I use to do Ireland punting for people, i know what it's like running around nicking the best prices so don't tell me you only go around shop to shop for yourself....I was a regular with PP and got the red card over Boccacio and I EVEN GOT BANNED WITH BOYLES...and i bet with them from when they opened their first shops in Ireland i used my own account for other people to start nicking prices but when i had 2500/100 e.w on Am I Blue at 25/1 that was that. They phoned me up a couple of weeks ago (the day after the BHA said they found nothing untoward with Am I Blue) and they said we'll restore your old acc pre AIB's race and my acc is now back to normal but they said we have all your records and you biggest bets were between 25-50e.w's and we'll still be monitoring you ..all because i was a regulaar.and not a losing one Happy . .oh  AND YOU'LL BE PROUD OF ME none of that was C&P Excited

i dont see how "im beat" as you put it? i just dont agree with your mindset that punters who seek out value are somehow doing something wrong and this is sufficient reason for bookmakers not to lay them.

well done with your response, you probably have that saved already for occassions like this LLF...

The Galwayman this is the very last post I'm going to post on the Irish Forum. It really phucking depresses me to look at the forum. Everyone is a liar, or has to have a motive, if someone posts Boyls are going a good price automatically the next post is "You work for Boyls" If the say they were told a horse there called a bs...Anyway I'm not going to ramble on because it's not worth the aggro.... Someone on here PM'd me one day and asked me about punting. We got talking over a couple of weeks 'blah blah blah' anyway to make a long story short they asked me would i open a few accounts (i got a few quid off them to open Accs with Pads, Lads, WH, the mullingar mob, sjames mob) and i was punting away but i always had my own Boyl accs this 6 years and i've been punting with them since they opened their first shop down south. Eventually the accounts started getting closed one by one. Not necessarily for winning but for haying €50s or €100s e.w. on 10/1-14/1-20/1 shots who about half an hour later where 5s and 6s but boyles new the strength of my bets and it all came to a head when i had £100e.w Am i Blue at 25s....The next day i went to have a bet €20 e.w on a horse and it came back i could have 50cent win at s.p...so i withdrew the money and that was that so about 6 months ago i put 200 quid in the acc and everytime i had a bet €20e.w it would come back 50c e.w and i just done it race after race after race...and a couple of months ago i had someone phone me up and they told me that i could have my acc restored to a certain date before i started the big bets and the only 2 conditions are No GP and MB specials....So that your honour is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth...But i can see why no one posts on here anymore...There is some nasty people on here...Merry Christmas.

Easy Analogs I'm sure you can understand cynicism when it comes to boyles. They are a bunch of jokers and it was a tongue in cheek remark to your story. I wish they'd re open my account.
