Apart from the obvious top 4 of Walsh, Geraghty, Russell and Carbery.  Who is number 5 in your opinion? Or which up and coming Jock could make it into fifth?

Not sure his career ever truly recovered from the Central House debacle, I know all jockeys make mistakes, even silly ones like that, but that is the one people always seem to play back. It's unfortunate for poor Roger.

I think Townend based on recent achievments must be the fifth, (I know any jockey given the right oppertunities can ride winners per say but that's another argument) I think one could make the argument that he has more recent big race success than Carberry and even at this stage probably as much as Russell in terms of Grade 1's.

I'll be interested to see how long he will wait in Ruby's shadow, good job and all as it is, but I'd argue that for the long term health of the Willie Mullins operation....... it is more important to keep Townend onside than Ruby.. hows that for ye ha!!

I really like Bryan Coopers style of riding, Heskin is also a great prospect imo and we have to remember that given his connections, the most dominant jockey of the coming era of NH racing has yet to even jump an obstacle in public.

Whatever happened to Garreth Cotter??. Did he get a bad injury which forced him to give it up??            1. R  Walsh, 2.D.Russell(apart from his annoying habit of going round the inside when the ground is in **** e. "Especially in Limerick and Thurles" 3. Paul Townsend 4. Paul Carberry. 5. R. McNamara.
Report ChildOfMine2 November 28, 2011 10:23 PM GMT
Townend is good but all Willie's top horses have made him who he is and slightly overrated - thinks he's riding machines all the time. Andrew Lynch is a fantastic jockey and brilliant from the front. Robbie Power shouldn't be even mentioned on this thread - Not in the top ten in this country!!!!!

My five are Ruby/Geraghty/Russell/Carberry/Lynch.

I know I've already voted for Townend but I'd like to think young Cooper is going the same way as Townend,i.e,to the top, lovely quiet style mid race, good hands, horses seem to run for him.

He'd be ahead of Carberry now as he's towards  the end of his career.

----------------------
That's a shocking statistic but I suppose the rides have long since dried up,the Central House thing was such a high profile gaffe, big race on TV and at Christmas IIRC followed up by a few fall offs.

Dessie Hughes still gives him a few crumbs but I can't imagine how he's able to afford to keep doing it.

It won't be long before Ben Dalton is a top jock.

Surprised to see no mention for Tom Doyle esp from the front.
Top 5 maybe not but Top 10 yes.

I will give the 5 spot to A E Lynch simply because I believe he gets more spare winners than young Townend.
Report topfarrier November 29, 2011 9:20 PM GMT

Mister T, said something about a skiing trip against dessie's wishes?

for what i know it was cheltenham time and he was left with responsibility back in the yard, he ended up going on the beer, then on to the airport with a few lads including young roche and flying to spain. he got the sack seemingly but he got back in after a while.

I believe Roger suffered an unfortunate case of the shi*s one day arriving on course when he discovered that the Turf Club were testing jockeys!

Looks between Townend and Lynch.  Personally I would have Towenend over hurdles and Lynch for the chases.
Report Allduckornodinner November 30, 2011 9:24 AM GMT
Davy Condon would probably be my number 3 after Ruby and Geraghty. Carberry can be briliant as can Russell but I often find it hard to catch the latter right. Agree Townend is given the ammunition but he rarely gets beat on one that should have won. Andrew Lynch deserves huge respect for taking the amount of rides he does. Plenty lads with the rides he has for de Bromhead would be dodging a lot of them. As far as actual riders go Tom Doyle wouldn't lace the boots of the top fella's but he does have a decent racing brain which compensates for this.

Adrian Heskin is a lovely rider but injuries look like they could unfortunately be a permanent fixture in his career. Robert Jones is good value for his claim. Theres loads of decent amateurs out there who would be well up to being top 10 riders if they went pro. Declan Lavery is a very tidy rider and hopefully he gets a few chances from Mullins this winter when theres double meetings.
