The last time I was at the track the only big bet I ever saw was Patrick Wilmott but he is a owner/punter. Not sure their is many big punters in Ireland unless they come out for the Festivals.

Betting ring is loses bare thin at most meetings I must say. Mind you when you can do it online what is the point of going to a wet ThurlesConfused

Take a look at the ride Maurice Linehan gave Tarvini there at Huntington if ye can lads, I can see why he is riding for JP, that 10 pounds won't last long.

These things go in cycles . Ring was busy when there was plenty of money floating about , a la Celtic Tiger . I dont go racing much now, one of the main reasons for that is that the Irish bookies have become like their counterparts across the water  , virtually all offering the same prices and nobody stepping out of line .

Last few times I was racing , wore my shoes down walking up and down looking for the value , there was little or  none . Prices follow Betfair largely , certainly as a maximum price guide I suspect , exchanges have changed things for the punter , and most races on here there are price fluctuations  which dont seem to be reflected in the bookies prices . Even when horses drift on here near the off I dont see the bookies show reflecting it . Dundalk as bad as any others I can recall .

Presumably the bookies are also having a tough time , so it is within their power to control their prices to guarantee profit , which is what making a book is always about . But you cant win money if you dont lay anything decent . Catch 22 situation .

The glory days are gone , possibly forever .  I can remember JP when he was starting out , good layer , taking a chance betimes , dont think there are many following in his footsteps . Pity , used to be part of the craic at the meetings , dont get those feelings nowadays .  I blame the bean counters .

I brought a friend of mine to Punchestown this year who is a non racegoer. He asked me "Are all the bookie prices controlled by one computer?" - pretty much said it all
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle October 30, 2011 5:58 PM GMT
I think people with massive bankrolls could risk stepping out Kelly. I for instance would be taking on Master Minded for everything I owned at last year festival and if I had a bankroll to call on of 50 Million it would allow you to step out and take the real massive bets at the Festival with the massive rollers.

I wonder why JP does not buy a pitch and just take on horses. He has so much information from all yards I am surprised he does not. He does need the cash but It would be exciting none the less.
Report Kelly October 30, 2011 9:57 PM GMT
JP was on the Late Late some years ago and was asked by Pat Kenny if he would bet 2 million on Istabraq to win a million .  JP replied , if you have the 2 million why would you bet (or similar words to that effect ) .

Most of the best bookies I have known were at their ( laying) best when they were hungry .  When they beat the punter and accumulated an adequate pile , they tended to become risk averse . This aspect now pervades the bigger bookies / chains these days  , they generally have made their pile , they are getting £800 plus a week from each of the 4 FOBT's in their pitch , why expose yourself to the possibility of losing money on a horse race . Just leave yourself a margin and see what happens . Or fiddle around with the exchanges and do the equivalent of arbing . And stop any arbers and successful winning punters ( easily identified nowadays , computers are  often very useful  ) . Bean counters rule !  No thrill of the chase any more , different situation , different outlook .

What do people expect?? Individual books to come up with their own tissues...bet over the machine, leave themselves exposed to all the arbers.....how long would they last betting to 90-95%

Easy talk but last meeting I was at was Limerick a few weeks back. I walked into the ring and could count the amount of people there...literally count them. In fact I could hear the conversations people were having....would you believe it. You could hear a pin drop. I would say the average bookmaker didnt hold 1500 cash...no wonder the amount of bookmakers standing has dropped so dramatically.

And now they are getting robbed at gunpoint in racecourse car parks.
Report Tolmi October 31, 2011 12:38 PM GMT
Would you have laid Master Minded for everything you owned at Aintree last April as well?
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle October 31, 2011 1:33 PM GMT
Maybe Tolmi but I was sure he could not win the Champion Chase at the price of 2/1 or worse it would have been well worth the lay to take a stand out price and attack all the money in the ring. Of course if you could afford it that is.
Report Fearless Willie October 31, 2011 3:28 PM GMT
If you could afford it - im guessing by your posts Ruby - I dont think youl ever have money because your attitude towards gambling is that of a dreamers.

You're one of these guys that can never see other outcomes....frequently go all-in.....and then your left with the inevitable....
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle October 31, 2011 3:41 PM GMT
Willie if you could afford to lose that money which only JP prob can. I never do such a thing but the excitement of going top price on a horse in the middle of the festival ring and it losing must be euphoria unimaginable that only the brave can expierence.
Report Kelly October 31, 2011 4:23 PM GMT
One of the other aspects of current economic situation is diminishing assets .  A while back like a lot of the rest of us the bookie may have had assets such as property , land  , business , investments etc  ,  nearly all those have diminshed markedly in value recently , banks wont lend , jobs are scarce .

Overall there is not much money about , so why would racing not suffer ?

Racing , like a lot of other activities is subject to supply and demand which means continuous adjustment .  Reckon we just have to get used to it . Some can continue to look back over their shoulder at the "glory days " , hope they return , but would not be betting on it short term .
