14:25 Cyprusormilan E/W - Not a fan of odds-on favs and this has run two solid races in points, second fav disappointed at Downpatrick and not a lot else in the race.

14:55 - The Second Coming is running but short and already on for Chelt so no bet.

15:25 - No Bet

16:00 - Just For Joe E/W 5/2

16:35 - No Bet

17:05 - Holly Tree E/W 25/1 - Already a course winner and ran better than usual at the meeting here in August so clearly likes the course

17:35 - Tell Dawstown E/W 14/1 - Backed to make a winning debut in a decent time at Dawstown back in May, clearly has ability and trainer has done well with similar types in the past scoring at big prices.

lads no getting away from how impressive mount benbulben has been but regardless how good a horse is first run back on ground as bad as its going to be around Galway ??????? ..... unless he s 100% fit which  i think it s dangerous to be backing him odds on .......
Then again the opposition don t look like they are in his class ... Letter of Credit the only one who could give him race ...fit from 2 runs over hurdles and won bumpers on bottomless ground ..

Like the look of Just for Joey against Laganbank getting 6lbs ...backed him at 5/2

I can t back a horse winner at the moment so do the opposite i say SillySillySilly

it's slashing down here, smell a couple of 50 to 1 + winners
Report wildmanfromborneo October 22, 2011 12:44 PM BST
Its funny the way different people look at races,i read Workriders excellent write up on Mount Benbulben at Tinahely and his point was this was some horse because he knocked down every fence,Princesse D`Anjou tells us he jumped poorly at Dromahane so we have established he is a poor jumper. We know he has an engine from watching his bumper wins but this is his first run over hurdles and if, as seems likely to me, he makes a mistake he could find himself behind and i can`t see Paul Carberry being hard on him.The race is full of horses with plenty of hurdling expierience well capable of hurdling at speed and that for me makes Mount Benbulben a massive lay.
Report Princesse D'Anjou October 22, 2011 12:56 PM BST
I thought Mount B would be a lot shorter than he is Wildman - thought that the 8/11 would come under pressure unless he's 75% fit but I've yet to see a horse plough through as many fences as he did and still win easily, he was fourth jumping the last at Dromahane and the jockey lost both reins and he still ran on into second - there were 8 subsequent winners in behind too.

Letter of Credit only ran 6 days ago so there's always a chance he'll underperform and there's not a lot else in the race though Mount B will arguably be better when stepped up to 2 1/2m++

If you were going to lay him Wildman I'd look at the place market as couldn't lay him at bigger than 4/7 myself.
Report wildmanfromborneo October 22, 2011 1:07 PM BST
I had considered laying him for a place but that market is so weak i generally ignore it.The fact that he may jump poorly could lead to Paul Carberry giving up if he finds himself far back.
Many here are far more skilful on computers than me and surely the tactic of laying him pre race and backing him in running might apply for those that like him, remember the in running layers may not be aware of his poor jumping.
So to sum up i think he is a massive lay but if you must back him back him in running because he will surely trade much bigger when he makes the inevitable mistake.

i have to say  i am in total agreement with yourlack on this one .......firstly he went off at 2.62 on the off so i imagine he was pulling his way down to the start .........during the race he was pulling the head off carberry , you could clearly see at the hurdle just after the winning post with a circuit to go he ran right up the arses of the field after jumping it .... for those who think he should have gone wide , obviously giving a horse thats pulling hard no cover , ye might aswell have torn up yere dockets then cause he would have had no chance of getting home at galway  ..It s seriously unfortunate what happend , lets hope he s ok

workrider to call for a suspension on carberry is laughable
Report wildmanfromborneo October 22, 2011 3:15 PM BST
I hate to disagree with Workrider but he is not a front runner and the fact is he didn`t settle in the race. All Carberry tried to do was settle the horse, what happened was an accident is anyone seriously saying he did it deliberately.
Report yourlack October 22, 2011 3:17 PM BST
He was trying to teach him how to race like noone else like paul can. Just cause he went from the front in his bumpers for a different trainer doesnt mean he has to for this trainer. There is some engine there.

Report Princesse D'Anjou October 22, 2011 3:22 PM BST
He's riding a very valuable horse - he's tucked it in behind inferior horses and when it became clear the horse was travelling so well and running free he's done nothing.

Keeping him in behind others he was always going to risk that happening - he should have let him stride on IMO and given him a real sight of his hurdles.

Some load of rubbish talk here. He is a hard puller and given he was fresh as well, Elliott almost certainly told Carberry to bury him, get him settled and come through late to win if he could, learning plenty without having a hard race. As it turned out, the horse didn't settle at all and was still pulling with 5f to race. He would have needed to be a very good horse to win after pulling so hard, but to give Carberry stick for the ride is missing out on the big picture. Elliott and his owner want this horse to learn to race correctly to ensure he goes the right way and that is the type of ride that gives them the best chance of getting him settled.

Been out and just watched it on replay, very hard to call on what he (Carberry) should have done or not as there was a danger the horse might light up if he pulled it wide and let it stride on the way it was fighting for its head.

In hindsight it would have been the thing to do as he would of at least had a look at his hurdles but what happened was a pure accident and can happen when horse are tightly packed like that.

I think he would have picked the lot of them up in the straight the way he was travelling.

gant i know you like elliott it comes across in most of your posts about him...maybe it did fall twice while schooling i cant say if it did or not...you seem to have an angle into that stable....but why change its way of running in a novice hurdle in those conditions..surely today was the day to let the horse get its confidence back against what in all fairness were a modest lot if we're been honest ..let him enjoy himself out front ..then another day teach him to settle...if what you say is true and i have no reason to doubt you ..him falling twice would be a worry ... bad decision all round imo...i wonder did barry concur....

Workrider you need to realise that trainer's don't think about one day, most certainly not a poxy maiden hurdle at Galway, they have to consider the big picture. If he gave him his head and made the running 12 lengths clear of everything else today, he might well have won, but the risk would be the horse would think that is what is expected of him every time he gets to a racecourse and good luck trying to settle him in a small field novice hurdle next time, which is probably where he would have run next if winning today. This is a long term game and sometimes you'll back a horse that loses because the trainer was trying to do the best for the future of the horse, eg Alanza earlier this year. Keep backing him, because when that horse learns to settle he'll be a machine.
Report Allduckornodinner October 22, 2011 9:06 PM BST
Workrider you'd be off your game to send that horse out in front today knowing how free he runs. If Carberry had set out to make all he would 't have been able to hold one side of him and he definately wouldn't have got into a rhythm. The aim was to get him to drop the bridle and get him jumping. Watching the horse jump he obviously wasn't sure how to back off and go for short ones. If he had been running away in front he more than likely would have been chancy and flyleaping over them easyfix hurdles and paid the price at some point. My view is that the horse is braindead like several of them Beneficials.
