Hello Forumites,

The first ever meeting of the Dublin Racing Club will take place on Thursday 27th October at 7.30pm. The venue will be upstairs in the Boars Head, Capel Street.

Everyone is welcome, membership of the club is free, and there will be prizes (and surprises) on the night. The idea of the club is basically to allow racing followers of all levels of interest get together, have a bit of fun, and hopefully learn something along the way. If you’re a complete novice or an established campaigner, this is the club for you.

The first meeting promises to be fun, interesting and insightful. The informal programme for the night is as follows:

7.30pm Panel discussion featuring:
Damien McElroy (former racing correspondent for the Irish Independent)
Jessica Lamb (reporter with the Irish Racing Post)
David Jennings (spotlight writer and race analyst with the Irish Racing Post)

8.15pm Guest Speaker – Noel Hayes, Head of Sportsbook, ****

(There will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A in both these sessions)

8.30pm – we’ll have some great prizes and info on further meetings to wrap things up. Times will be flexible but the whole thing will be over around 9pm, with a few hours left until closing!

And yes, there will be free finger food!

Any questions - please post on here or email dublinracingclub@gmail.com

If I was in Dublin I'd go mate, great initiative.
Report trooper thornton October 13, 2011 8:18 PM BST
Looks like a lot of effort has gone into the night well done

Only downer IMO is most of your members wont be able to get a bet on with Noels crew so not much point in having as a guest speaker stating how many big bets they are laying Etc Etc

But good luck anyway wish you well
Report Gobbie October 13, 2011 8:41 PM BST
Thanks guys. And this won't be a soft touch to the bookmaker. Credit to Noel for going up before a group of punters. No doubt some hard questions will be asked.
Report wildmanfromborneo October 13, 2011 8:49 PM BST
Great idea but why would would you hold your first meeting on a race day, anyone attending Clonmel races that day won`t make it.
Report Gobbie October 13, 2011 8:56 PM BST
Fair point but the idea was with the presidential election that day and forthcoming bank holiday people will be in good form for a night out. Hence the 27th.

There seems to be a catch lurking in the background. What are the long term objectives of the club?
Report donal October 13, 2011 10:36 PM BST
Your panel leaves a lot to be desired!!

Is Noel Hayes giving a speech on taking punters on overnight?
Report Princesse D'Anjou October 14, 2011 2:41 PM BST
^^ No but a punter came on over the phone and had 40,000 on sizing Symphony in the opener at Cheltenham.

Genuinely great idea and well done for putting it together.
Report Gobbie October 17, 2011 9:23 AM BST
Just bringing this to the top for those that have not yet seen it.

Thanks to those who have given encouragement. There's certainly no hidden agendas as some have suggested but come along and judge for yourselves. The more the merrier.

Report Byerley_Racing October 17, 2011 2:18 PM BST
I was speaking to Johnny last week and he told me the Sindo column had finished. It was essentially a betfair sponsored piece of work and I think they ceased their support for it.

papers coping on to jonny bluffer
Report hammy October 17, 2011 3:53 PM BST
Excuse my ignorance, but who does Noel Hayes work for?
Report Gobbie October 17, 2011 4:31 PM BST
Hammy - Noel works for the Louth bookmaker (asterixed out when I pasted in the details). For those without a big knowledge of the game it should be interesting to hear about odds compilation and the cncept of a book etc. And for the experienced punters who have had bad experiences they will get the chance to ask direct questions.
Report reb October 17, 2011 4:49 PM BST
Gobbie, as membership is free, who is funding the club ?
Report irish_guy_13 October 17, 2011 4:55 PM BST
thanks gimme,  very surprised at that, i taught it would have been a very popular part of their racing coverage.
Report Gobbie October 17, 2011 5:31 PM BST
reb - there's been no costs yet so we haven't needed funding. The venue and speakers have all very kindly been provided out of good spirit towards the idea. This is greatly appreciated and fair play to all of them.

If there are future meetings, and hopefully there will be, we can consider sponsorship or a small membership fee but at the moment we're just concentrating on keeping it simple and having an enjoyable first meeting.
Report reb October 17, 2011 5:38 PM BST
Ok Gobbie. Good Luck with it.
Report workrider October 17, 2011 6:54 PM BST
gobbie ,      is the idea to attract members and hopefully get into buying a horse etc etc....or is it basically just a discussion group ........
Report sinndar001 October 17, 2011 7:05 PM BST
I would suggest to get rid of bookmaker influence unless u wanna be a prostitute for that 'Industry'. Why not ask a pro punter to speak on the night. He/she would know more than any chain bookmaker rep and would create a positive attitude of winning at punting on horses unlike bookmakers who just want fools to punts on Steepledowns, Overseas racing and anything except Irish racing.
Report ya' havin' that one dave October 17, 2011 7:16 PM BST
to get people interested dont have lads up there talking about phantom bets
Report Rage Against The Machine October 17, 2011 7:21 PM BST
You deserve great credit for arranging such an evening and I hope it goes well for ya.

However, I would be delighted if anyone in attendance could report back on the Spoils spokesman's idea of "odds compilation" and their "concept of a book".
Report ya' havin' that one dave October 17, 2011 7:23 PM BST
it will go something like this "we have a lot of english and european punters who we lay large bets too"
but not one irish punter who has a clue can get on
Report Gobbie October 17, 2011 7:51 PM BST
As mentioned in the intro the odds complier is only a guest speaker on the first night. For future meetings we will have clerks of courses, vets, trainers and jockeys as guest speakers. The idea would be to have variety each month.

workrider - it's a club so we'll hopefully go racing and on stable tours in the future. If the numbers were high there may be a syndicate but that's a long way down the line and there's no plans for that at the moment. Hopefully the first night will be good fun and we'll just take it from there if there's an interest in another meeting next month.
Report Gobbie October 17, 2011 7:52 PM BST
sinndar - pro punter is a good idea and is something I'll arrange for a future meeting; either as a panellist or in the speaker slot.

Best of luck with it Gobbie. I would attend but I'm down the country. Anything that promotes Irish racing has to be welcomed.
Report TradeFair October 17, 2011 8:55 PM BST
All the pro punters in Ireland will tell you the same. Lay the dead ones and when one is live get as much as you can on and don't pay.
Report ilikewavingatbuses October 17, 2011 10:02 PM BST
maye bigwilly will attend and speak, hes 'pro' innit!

Report The Gotchee October 17, 2011 10:49 PM BST
Great idea, best of luck. It has great potential. With the enormous  marketing budget they have, I often wondered why HRI couldn't come up with a similar idea.

Just bringing this ttt as it's on today. Hope to see a few of you later.

Anyone go? Any use and when's the next one? Would definitely go along if I knew well in advance when it was on
Report Gobbie October 30, 2011 8:54 PM GMT
Lumberg - I'm obviously biased as an organiser but I would say it was a great success. Around 45 showed up and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. Damien McElroy was described to me afterwards as a 'National Treasure'.

The employers of the aforementioned odds compiler presented us with a cheque to help get the club off the ground. A very nice and generous gesture. And he certainly was not spared with the line of questioning!

The next night most likely be the last Thursday of November. I'll post details well in advance but it will be a city centre location again.

I know there were forumites there the last night so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Report Princesse D'Anjou October 30, 2011 9:43 PM GMT
Good stuff - sounds like a great success and also great to see that Boyles do things other than restrict punters to 1,65 E/W bets and lay 30k bets over the phone.
Report Lumberg October 31, 2011 10:49 AM GMT
Thanks for that Gobbie, look forward to heading to the next one
