A view on the Dewhurst

I was in Powers the day Spiritual Star broke his maiden and I've got to say it was one of the most visually taking performances I've seen from a juvenile this year. He sauntered in by six lengths with the jockey never having to get remotely serious with him. The maiden was on September 23 so not enough time has elapsed for the form to be seriously tested, but i'd reckon it is probably a decent maiden.

This is not a vintage Dewhurst on the face of things and the Balding stable isn't one that is in the habit of tilting at windmills. This is a big day for Jimmy Fortune to put himself back in the spotlight and I think this fella might be the horse to move the stable on to the next level.

Power is a fine horse, but he is beatable as we saw in the Pheoinix Stakes. He wasn't given the best of rides that day with the jock going too soon, but you'd still like to see a horse with Dewhurst pretensions holding off the likes of La Collina. He will be on the premises and is probably better at 7 furlongs, but I can see something doing him.

The Varian and Hannon fancied horses are both unexposed with Bronterre apparently working the house down, but the latter stable seems to talk up nearly every horse they run in a Group race these times. I have a feeling Ektihaam might want a bit further so I'll be passing him over. I'd actually be more interested in the Meehan horse whos maiden form is working out well and who has Dettori up.

I can see 15/2 still available for Spiritual Star with Stan James and think he is worth a punt at that price, he was supplemented so they must reckon he is going to come in the first 4 so an each way bet might be in order.

In the Challenge Stakes, I can't really see beyond Strong Suit at 6/4 and think he will well despite having to give 5 pounds to a decent Cecil filly. I think he should be different gear to these to be honest. The stable seem to believe he should make up into a Lockinge/Queen Anne horse next season and if that is to be the case he should be taking this lot apart granted he is over his early season problems. He is quite a tall horse so he should be strengthening up all the time at this stage of the yearand as I say, I can't see him beaten unless there is some sort of physical problem.

Maqaasid has had a long hard season, lacks scope and is probably better at shorter and Rimth just plain shouldn't be good enough.

Sorry forgot to mention Chachamaidee, I think she was really flattered by her proximity to saphresa in a slowly run race at a meeting where the winners were coming from the front all week. I think she fillies only group 3 and listed races are more her level.

best of luck neil good write up again ...... yeah the first looks a match between strong suit the colt and chachamaidee the filly ......can t see any of the others featuring ....

The Dewhurst as you said doesn t look vinatge but still competitive . i know your right that hannon/hughes talking up every  group entered 2 year old but if you were taken by Spiritual stars win the last day you would have to be visually impressed with hannons Bronterre s  demolition of a 106 rated horse the last day at goodwood ... that was a listed contest while spiritual stars race was a maiden .....that s not saying one is better than the other but i just think Bronterre sets a very decent standard and it will take a good one to beat him ...4/1 looks good value ....

A couple of others two year olds later in the card really looked impressive to me first time out ....They are both  worth taking a look at on the attheraces website again ....Jim Bolgers Janney Muddles 4.35 , 8/1 and Perinnial 5.00 4/1 ........ Janney Muddles was very slowly away at the curragh and then switched from the rail right to the outside and showed serious turn of foot to get up to win and Perinnial also showed serious turn of foot when giving others first run in a very decent doncaster maiden .... michael hills minded him aswell and didn t get too serious at any stage ...while they are both obviously up in class they both looked like horses with plenty of improvement in them ....

Saw an interview with David Pipe the other day ... got the impression they have laid Beyond out for the ceserawitch 14/1 ........ usually pays to follow trainers who have a good record in this race and team Pipe tick those boxes .....good luck to all

It did look great on paper Mick no doubt, but I don't have access to RUK and so never saw it, I should have had a look at the RP preview on their site I suppose but I didn't think of it. I had it in my head he'd wind up short 11/4 ish or might have even gone off fav.

I go with my eye as much as figures most of the time tbh anyway, but yep demolition of a 106 horse means he might hardly have to improve at all to win this.

Power my only bet here as I think he'll prove best, has battle experience and made for Ryan Moore.
Report neill d October 8, 2011 3:14 PM BST
I don't believe it, was up with my fella the whole way and still managed to stick it out, Bolger doesn't send em and that.

SS possibly went a bit free, thank fook for Strong Suit is all I'll say, do Irish trainers care about unbeaten records anymore?

Manning has just rationalised it, can't argue with that, he made up his lengthLaugh

The minute Moore switches Power a gap appears Laugh
Report punchestown October 8, 2011 3:18 PM BST
Thought Moore could see what was going to happen (pinned in) and could have made his move to extract himself a bit earlier but instead waited til it was too late. That's racing for you.
Report neill d October 8, 2011 3:27 PM BST
they should just move Fallon into AOB's guest room, let him be stable jock and be done with it, moore cost them a lot of money there nad allied with SYT at ascot it highlights the importance of a Stable Jockey.
