I had never considered him as a president but have to say I was pretty impressed with him last night.
All the qualities mentioned in the original post and seems to have a clear idea as to how he can genuinely contribute from within the limited scope of president. Cuts a pretty healthy, vibrant, imposing figure as well which certainly can do no harm, particulary abroad, in the basic picture posing role of president. Michael D God help us. |

By:
****, my mother told me to back him for her and I never bothered, I actually like the guy as well, but just felt he might struggle because he hasn't politicked for it to the same extent as the others and didn't have a big machine behind him.

He's getting my vote. He may have been a member of FF, but he's not been corrupted by party politics. He's articulate, has experience when it comes to kick-starting business, and seems to have a genuine plan of how he can promote the country abroad at a time when we need all the help that we can get.

FFS - President kick-starting business etc etc. Not their f*ckin' job!!! Nor should it be.
The President can for all intents and purposes do nothing without approval from the oireachteas. Ceremonial and safe-guarding the constitution is basically it. I wish people in this country would actually go and understand the role of President as it currently stands. In relation to Gallagher and Davis in particular - why don't they stand for election and seek a role where they are empowered to do the things of which they seem so assured of their capability. A pair of chancers - but what is more galling is their naivety and complete misunderstanding of what the responsibilities are. In a dream world - "I can revive this country" blah blah - P!ss off the pair of you. If you genuinely wanted to kick-start the country the last place to position yourself is the presidency. |

You're jumping to conclusions about my post when you haven't even read it properly, you prat. I never said that kick-starting business was the role of the presidency. It is, however, the president's job to promote the country abroad. I feel that he is best placed to fulfil that requirement.

"It is, however, the president's job to promote the country abroad".
---------------------------------------------------------------------- No its not. Did I jump to conclusions here or read incorrectly . It might be your opinion that it should be part of the job, thats all it is, an opinion and you are welcome to it. However, your statement is FACTUALLY INCORRECT.My issue is people voting for someone on the basis they have the best credentials to do the job - but in fact they credentials they attribute to the candidate are not really essential for the job! (Again, not the job they think it SHOULD be). I repeat, they cannot do anything without authorisation from the oireachteas. So even if they had the best ideas in the world they would have to go through government to get approval - EVEN TO MAKE A SPEECH. This is what irritates me - Gallagher, Davis, Dana - do not seem to understand this - unfortunately neither do the electorate. |
|
By:
By the way, go ahead and vote for Gallagher (and I do wish he shutup about leaflets
). If he gets elected don't be surprised when he disappears out of sight when he is instructed as to what he can and cannot do. Then struggles to get to grips with his day-to-day job of reviewing legislation - about which he admiited couldn't name one piece in the last ten years![]() . |

Well said, wallflower. However , I think Gallagher and Davis understand their limited powers as President but it suits their campaign to pretend otherwise. |

By:
@reb - yep, fair point. I think you are right; I'm probably wrong saying naivety/misunderstanding on their part - it does suit them to shift the goalposts on a pitch that doesn't actually exist

Gallagher now into 5/2 with Pp.Has a real chance now and momentum is gathering. Has to beat a good candidate in Michael D. Friends of mine in Galway tell me that MDH is quite frail after his accident and looks every day of 70.Gallagher is a vigorous 49 year old and hopefully should kick on from here!

Michael D is weighed in. The ultimate transfer friendly candidate, and an ideal President.

gallagher looks like the only one with a bit of life in him....mitchell is too interested in pointing out the faults of others...norris s a joke , i'm sure his people must be dying everytime he opens his mouth....martin mcg is untrusted by a lot of people ....
dana has a real love of the country ..sadly though you dont become president because of it.... mdh..is old and frail and not exactly easy to understand... |
|

I'm seriously ****g gutted here, this could put to rest the time when I was at school on gold Cup Day and I gave her 50 quid to put on Kicking King, she forgot, but that was a 4/1 shot. Gallagher was about a 66's or 50's shot when I was asked to put 20 quid on.
I'm dreading dinner on Sunday.Moral of the story, put down yer own money, or at least don't ask me to. |

By:
neill d....my uncle used to tell this story when he had a few drinks... my grandfather gave my uncle a old sixpence to put on a horse for him....it won at 33/1 but my uncle never put it on...my grandfather never let him forget it either....

neill ffs, that wuld be quite funnyif there wasnt so much money at stake. you should hope mickey d gets in

Rightly so I suppose
, I can see him going shorter tbh, I think the lack of a political career is actually a help to him and he should accentuate the fact that he has actually made it in 'the real world.' He is coming accross as the guy who has done a proper days work amongst a host of hooky career politicians, whether this is by accident or design I'm not sure, but he's doing it. |

there was a lot of talk in louth last year that ff ers might nominate Sean to be a candidate in the gen. election
i know a fella who's campaign he managed at the local elections some years back was on the national executive as far as i know, deep in FF |

By:
I'm possibly voting Gallagher but I don't see him coming even close, Has no real base to speak of, fine for a senior politician to run as an independent but he has no support base at all really. He was out campaigning months before the others and as the day draws closer his numbers should fall off.

From www.idevelop.ie :
Dragons' Den presenter Sean Gallagher has lashed out at the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) and its director general Tom Parlon for "blatant and wholesale abuse of the smaller sub-contractor" in order to protect the interests of the large developers. Thousands of real construction jobs have been lost because the construction business is stacked in favour of the large developers who control the CIF for their own purposes, Gallagher told the Sunday Tribune. "I think Tom Parlon is trying his best but you have to remember who is paying his salary." The Cavan-born entrepreneur, who has left the home technology company, Smarthomes, which he set up with Derek Roddy in 2002, confirmed that Fianna Fáil had approached him to stand in the Louth constituency after justice minister Dermot Ahern announced he would not contest the next general election. "I'm considering it" said Gallagher, who stressed he had been pursuing the issue of the small builders for years and said his outburst on the topic at a recent CIF meeting had nothing to do with whether he stands for election or not. |

Was i imagining things or did Vincent Browne say on Tonight with Vincent Browne on Tuesday night after the debate, that the poll coming out on Thursday was sponsored (or something along them lines) by Paddy Power. This looks and smells like a bookies gamble to me.
|
|
By:
Both polls this week have Gallagher at 20-21%
reb - just because FF aproached someone to run in a GE and they turned them down doesn't make them a FFer. In fact, turning them down shows more credibility in terms of NOT being a FFer |
|
By:
Wallflower you are factually correct about presidential powers but in any election there is a protest vote.
I hate what Europe did to this country so i am voting for Dana with little expectation of her winning, doubt Dana herself thinks she can win,but the higher her vote the better for us.A European elite, politicians, bankers and the legal profession plundered this country and have forced our youngest to emigrate and thats why i hate them |

This is great, the Traitors in Fianna Fail destory the county yet again and you folks want to put Gallagher a die hard fianna Failer in as president, i really do despair for this country.
Are it's people really that stupid, maybe we do deserve everything we get. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Se%C3%A1n_Gallagher Gallagher had been given €41,550 after being appointed to various State boards by Fianna Fáil ministers He was also appointed as a director of FÁS in 2010. Gallagher confirmed that he came from "the Fianna Fáil gene pool”, Gallagher is a former member of the Fianna Fáil National Executive he was approaching Fianna Fáil Oireachtas members in order to run as an independent candidate, but with a "semi-detached" relationship with the party.[13] While the Fianna Fáil councillors at Longford claimed they had passed a resolution supporting his candidacy In January 2010, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan appointed him to the board of An Foras Áiseanna Saothair. in 1980, he attended Teagasc Agricultural College, Ballyhaise, County Cavan. It was around this time that Gallagher first became involved in Fianna Fáil Last night I had the honour of speaking at the Ógra Fianna Fáil National Youth Conference in Bundoran |

wmfb, why dana? does the word "constitution" excite you, is it the waving around of the book or is it the moaney voice?
|
|
By:
She is a Eurosceptic and rightly places the blame for Irelands woes on Europe. The political elite, the bankers and the legal profession plundered this country and have forced are young to emigrate once more but it was the European banks that facilitated this robbery and Europe is forcing the ordinary citizens to pay back a debt that is not ours.
|
|
By:
do you not think she comes across as clueless? she wasnt evensure of what exactly was within her powers if she were to be president, the other candidates had to repeatedly correct her!
shes great at moaning but im not sure thats what we need. surely shed be the laughing stock of europe if she was our president!! |
|
By:
looks as if she could be in trouble now alright ....something about application for american citizenship.....
|
|
By:
As she has no chance of being elected it doesn`t really matter. Her main complaint is a valid one that is the Irish constitution is being overridden by the European one,you quite correctly realise that this is irrelevant to the presidential election but this is our sole form of protest.I dont think she is clueless, she is well aware of the powers of the president its just the other candidates don`t accept the concept of a protest vote.

Gallagher now into 9/4 with Pp. The relentless march is on!! I wonder if any of the candidates are punters. I know Brian Crowley likes a friendly small stakes poker game every Thursday with his buddies. He wouldn't be far off if Mickey M had let him out of the traps. And also think how Mairead Mc Guiness must be thinking, let down terribly by her party.

wmfb, fair enough. when i saw the latest pole i thought to myself shes doing well to get 5% isnt she
anyhow, luckily for me she has no hope! |
