I don't know a lot about Greyhounds but it seems i have acquired a dog.

Well actually i bought it for the wife as a birthday present.

It is only 5 months old and i take it that i will have to put it with somebody who rears or trains greyhounds.

I am based in Navan, Co.Meath and any help or advice would be appreciated.

im sure there's plenty of lads up your area rearing pups maybe enquire to someone close by you and when there reared then you can go looking for a professional trainer. get the rearing part organised first

mr murray's from that up that way ..if its a local trainer you're after i'd recommend two top class trainers ..who i had the pleasure of training greyhounds for me ..one is martin lanny who trains from his base near clane a really top guy who tells it like it is...the other is tina magrane who trains near kells another trainer to be trusted and also a lovely person to deal with ....hope that helps....

Martin Lanney trains in Wilkinstown just a few miles outside Navan......I agree with Workrider, he is spot on.
To get it reared send it down to Martin Tucker, the dog will be well looked after and Martin talks straight.
I get the feeling you are new to this so another reason for going to Martin is he will school on the pup for you and have it ready at 15 months to go to your trainer......He will have it coming out of the boxes.......2 handslips and 2 blast out of the boxes at Longford.....the dog won't be schooled within an inch of his life......lightly schooled.
Friends of mine use him all the time........He is based in Lanesborough.....He charges €25 a week to rear and schooling €50 a week........only 8 weeks approx will be schooling.

We rear all our own and a few we sell as pups only......   Some lads are hard to listen to 24/7 so I will recommend Martin Tucker to them.

YES...

More work would go into getting the injury sorted out than if the dog was injury free.

dont be giving your dog to martin tucker to rear mate.martin has far too many pups to look after and thats not a good thing when you want a pup reared properly.a pup needs to be handled played about with as this takes all nerves and shyness out of them.martin throws his pups in their feed and thats that for the day as hes so many to feed.you need to be looking for a rearer who has very little litters who will give the pups his time and make sure they get used to people handling them.the most important time in a pups life is the first 3 months, and the rearing of them.as for tina mcgrane and martin lanney i would,nt give them a jack russel if i thought anything of the pup.your in navan id recommend ian reilly,or olly bray.if you want to go up the road north a little id recommend craig kelly.

Who would you send the pup to rear and school?.....When you get a few open class dogs from a rearer you tend to go back.....Martin feeds breakfast and main meal to the pups...But sure each to their own....I'm sure Ian, Ollie or Craig would only take your pup in if it was doing open clocks and out if it wasn't.

craig ian and olly would take a cat if you were paying them.many a time iv seen the 3 mentioned with bad graders in their kennel.id send a pup to any rearer who tends to keep very few litters and who gives the pups the handling and attention needed.martin throws a bucket of grub into the pups and could,nt give a fiddlers fluck who eats or who dosent.as i said the first 3 months, and up to 12 months is the making and breaking of a dog or bitch.i read martins adverts on the dogs hes reared and id say theyre nothing special.maybe a few open class but no major competition winners.now a days people are breeding of bitches you would,nt give away hopeing they get a decent pup, which to me is wrong.my motto is if you breed **** you get ****.

Send him down the country to a county with a decent train link, at least you'll have a few good trips down to visit him 3 or 4 times, even if he turns out useless.

Best thing about owning pups is the craic visiting, he'll probably turn out **** anyway.

Maria Byrne rears a very good dog the Dysert prefix. Times are so bad she'd probably take your fellah in.

Golferno1........Have you been to Martin Tuckers place or is it just shelbourne park terrace talk where all the knockers hang out............Maybe you can pass on the name of one of these rearers you speak about to the chap asking the question.........tell the man starting out something positive about the sport......Knocking people in the game proves to me you are a greyhound man.

GANNT im in dogs 35 years my family to many years to count back.iv seen martin tuckers place, and also had a litter reared by him.id rate mr fox from cork, damien mccann from antrim, donal oneil from tyrone, eddie wade from cashel, and the three i listed above.im putting this fellow straight, not like you who seems to be promoting martin tuckers facilities.is this the same martin who made a fool of himself on the radio saying he was a professional masterbater of dogs...lol that says it all for any a good greyhound judge.if you re read my posts point out to me the negativitey i have showed towards greyhound racing.i have told the man straight, and ive also helped in in finding 3 professional men from the meath area that would put martin to bottom of the que in the rearing of greyhounds.as iv said its all in the rearing, and if not done right forget about them at 12 months when you pick them up.GANT IF YOU NEED ANYMORE INFO ON THE RACING GREYHOUND ILL GIVE YOU A FEW TIPS..

You gave him the name of 3 trainers earlier the pup is only 5 months old......If I need ant tips on rearing or matings I will check you out...We have only 4 open racers at the moment and could do with a few more.........I am not promoting Martin Tucker only offering the chap my opinion but fair play to you for putting up a few names instead of slating someone you had a bad experience with......I have sent a nervous dog to Damien McCann and he is good at schooling them...Robbie Fox is actually in Limerick and I wouldn't recommend him but that's only my opinion......You said Ollie, Ian or Craig would train a cat for money........Ring up with a dog A3 or worse and I know what answer you would get...........THANK GOD WE ONLY REAR OUR OWN AND THE ODD FEW FOR THE LADS WHO BUY OFF US ON A REGULAR BASIS.

gant what would you pay for a reared dog mate?
By:
GANT007

Depends on the breeding, age and what's done with him.
To get him reared from 3 months to 12 months in or around €25 a week/€100 a month

Surprised Anne never offered you a brandy or whiskey but if you dont like them maybe she got bad vibes, who cares ? you know the best rearer in Ireland, Tucker. LaughLaughLaugh

I'll tell Robert and the family you were asking for them.
By:

Never said Tucker is the best rearer and I am not in the business of slating anyone....plenty will do that in the greyhound game but as you said....WHO CARES.
By:

When: 07 Oct 11 22:11
Exactly mate there is a lot of very poor dogs from good rearing establishments.

Bad dogs from litters which contained very fast dogs.

No offence intended, Robert and Anne reared good and bad dogs for me.They are good people.

Good luck
