Sound sensible to me except for the jumps , 8 whacks sometimes not enough in long distance races for instance . Any of you ex jockeys any views , and what are current rules in Ireland ?

Flat fair enough but the one over jumps seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Cant hit the horse more than8 times in a race like the GN or something - neck and neck comin to the last in the Gold Cup and u have 8 already given- its not as if the jock is going to be counting! So he loses all his prizemoney if he uses the whip once more - load of rubbish
Chief among the changes to the use of the whip, is the amount of times a jockey will be able to implementit. A jockey on the Flat will now only be able to use it seven times in the course of the race, while over jumps it can be used eight times. Under both codes, the whip can only be used a maximum of five times after the last obstacle/in the final furlong. Failure to adhere to the new frequency limits will result in a minimum of a five-day suspension, with the previous minimum penalty a caution. Jockeys who pick up a ban exceeding three days can expect to lose their share of the prize-money and riding fee. It will also be an offence for any owner or trainer to reimburse the rider from their own share of the prize-money. Should a jockey appear before a BHA disciplinary panel three or more times over use of the whip, their licence could be reviewed. All new penalties and guidelines will come into force on Monday, October 10. |

What are the rules in Ireland ? Is this going to make things very complicated for our jockeys going to ride in UK ?

Virtually no rules at all in Ireland Kelly, down on paper but not worth the ink they were printed on.
If on the odd occasion the stewards deem it necessary to call a jockey in for a riding offence its either a slap on the wrist or a massive one day ban, Irish racing is totally deterrent free. Do you not think that a lot of jockeys can be too quick to administer a few cracks to a lazy horse out the country because they themselves are too lazy to push and conjure the animal?. Looks like the English based Jump jockeys will have to frequent the gym more often, I'm no racing prude and seeing horses getting whipped doesn't take a funk out of me unless of course a beaten horse is been flogged for no reason, but I do think it will make it a more level playing field as some jockeys are far too reliant on their whip, if a lazy slow horse doesn't win because a jockey wasn't allowed hit him 20 times who cares, there will still be a winner in every race. |
