A PROPOSED super-casino for Two –Mile Borris in Co Tipperary that it was hoped would create hundreds of jobs, will not now go ahead.
Justice Minister Alan Shatter announced today that the Cabinet had decided there was no need for a resort style casino in Ireland and provision would be made for more modest casinos as currently exist.
The planned €460m development, outside Thurles, was to contain a 500-bedromom hotel, a racetrack and a casino and it was hoped it would create jobs and attract record visitor numbers to the area creating an economic boom.
The man behind the venture is businessman Richard Quirke, who owns Dr Quirkey’s Emporium in Dublin.
An Bord Pleanála gave the go-ahead to the casino, 500-bedroom hotel and racetrack complex, although it refused permission for a 15,000-seat music venue at the site.
The project was being backed by Independent TD Michael Lowry. A number of local people, as well as An Taisce, had opposed the plan.
An Taisce said its scale and size would have significant environmental and economic consequences for the area and for other racing venues in Munster.
At the time, An Taisce said An Bord Pleanála had “failed to meet the requirements under EU law for evaluating projects under the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive.”
