My enduring  memory of  listening to sports ( on the radio ) in my earlier days .  Not sure who the commentator was , but that short sentence conveyed everything you needed to know about how the ball was moving . No superfluous words  , simple but effective .

Was reminded of this at the weekend when I was reading the obituary for John(ny) O'Meara who passed away just over a week ago , in his native Cork . At the time he played alongside Jack Kyle things were a bit different from nowadays  , rugby was one of the few areas where Ireland was united on the field  , O'Meara from UCC , Kyle from QUB  , deep south and far north .

Different game from nowadays too , pace and intensity .  Some of the Irish forwards of that era would look almost puny these days standing alongside some of our backs never mind our forwards . But he and Kyle  played  together on one of our best teams and brightened up many a dreary Saturday afternoon via steam radio . It always seemed to be raining on Saturday in those days .

He also represented Ireland in the sailing world  , a fact of which I was unaware not being in that stream .
