I would suggest triumphoragony is the one with the poor grasp of English.
First - to pick someone up on one word said in a live interview is quite petty. Second - Nothing wrong with use of the word "uncivilised" in the context of the point which she was making. Pointless thread, like 90% of the threads on here. |

, seriously, it was a classless and disrespectful comment to make, it was impossible to justify in any context and didn't show her in a great light, if she couldn 't think of anything better, all I'd hope is that she writes better than she speaks, on the possible caveat of it being a live interview, come on, she is a professional journalist who deals with words and language all day, and that is the best she can do, hold them to some basic standard at least, no wonder the RP is going down the swanny. She might as well have called em potato munchers. |

I'm gonna be classed as biased here of course(and please no reference to GAA as it doesn't affect me) but as a Dubliner it can be cringeworthy sometimes to see some Country folk on tv, especially those who even I can hardly understand. While this Country has parts it can be rightly proud of, some parts leave a lot to be desired. Of course some parts of Dublin can be put in that category as well, but parts of the Country still haven't got out've the 17th century. Then you have the likes of Marty Morrissey who should be locked in a cage in a freak circus somewhere who's allowed on tv. Even Mr Agent on ATR can be hard to understand sometimes.

Is she not entitled to an opinion? she didnt say nolans yard was uncivilised just that dublin was in her opinion was more civilised. jasus whats with people these days picking over every word and nuance that people come up with, from the shell to sea guards to cascarinos use of holocost and some other personality using (in the correct way) the word niggardly and all we get are pc fools jumping on a nonexistant bandwagon and pontificating about a non event. we really need to focus on more important things then these like what colour socks to wear in the morning! |

Spot on........I'm sure it was hard for an English city girl to adjust to the Irish rural sporting way of life......It's not for everyone but the fresh air will benefit her in the long run.

Well said Ballaman68.Why is everybody so sensitive and looking to be insulted,they should wait until some real misfortune befalls them.
I have worked with people from different cities mostly London and Dublin,they would often call us savages and ask us if we had electricity just normal banter.One of my best friends was a Dub who when we were travelling back from a race meeting would when we encountered street lights shout.....at last civilisation. |

I can see where ye are coming from with the bit of levity being required, my issue was more with her showing a lack of wit to be honest, but I can't see a difference in someone calling country people uncivilised and say calling all people from working class urban backgrounds violent scumbags, both equally unfounded, but what's the difference?
I get what you mean with regard to your friend wildman, but that is a totally different informal situation between friends, she is on the national broadcaster here. Nolan's yard accomodated her, did her a turn, obviously, it was mutually beneficial, but I just thought she could have done a little better, as I say she's a journalist, she should be a little better with words. I hate PC boring interviews as much as anyone, but if someone is going to break rank, at least make it interesting, witty or have some foundation. |

The mystery to me, is why did the "irish racing post" feel the need to recriuit a pretty moderate english journalist.
Nothing against the english part, but i generally just skip through her pieces because they bring so little to the paper. Her Galway plate day review, which got into the RP and Alistar Downs review of the sussex didnt was one of the most pointless pieces ever written |
