Seen a few Irish guys advertising themselves as pros of late, Irish guy named James D says he is a pro, he is on Twitter and describes himself as pro football bettor and advisor, seems to have his own tipping website named

http://www.jdfootballbetting.com

There was the guy in the Sunday Independent that Johnny Ward interviewed. I know neither just wondering can anyone throw any light on either esp the first guy?

If you are to believe Donal McCarthy in his Field betting column there are more majors, generals, ethereal characters and latin scholars punting professionally in the ring than you could shake a stick at.

If his column teaches a few things:
1. his horses to note (a select few) are woeful this year
2. these pros hardly last too long given the regular setbacks they encounter
3. the occasional fairy story on offer
4. Donal always wears sun shades such is the unrelenting sunshine in his job: nobody goes broke, unpaid or out of business

But in fairness to the man there's never any "Chronicle-style" bets as the clueless Gleeson will rant over.

P.S. livingthedream-head for east Cork and Walter Raleigh's old watering hole of Youghal and betting professional are to be seen in their natural environment beneath the bandstand on the prom.

RoyalAcademy has it right, three are living in Youghal but the biggest in all senses of the word is Sidney Greenstreet who is based in Dublin.

The ring is empty these days I am told of the the Professional punters. They are all on their PC's at home watching the two Irish meetings that may be on.
Report wildmanfromborneo September 6, 2011 6:20 PM BST
The extra charges have forced them all back, they were all at Leopardstown on saturday.

RoyalAcademy can you shed any light on Donal McCarthy not working as head trader for laddies anymore
Report squigs September 6, 2011 9:15 PM BST
Is he not still doing both the Ladbrokes job and the Irish Field column still?

Has anyone heard of this English guy 'the Admiral'? Seems to be a lot of talk about him lately. Punts like a lunatic and doing fairly well it would seem.

havent heard of big boris for a while wildman but last i heard he was bigger than sidney greenstreet on betfair but he could be back in the ring now that his being hit with the premium charge on here
Report wildmanfromborneo September 8, 2011 12:48 PM BST
Not true Robo none bigger than Sidney on Betfair. You still havent told me whether Big Boris is a punter or a bookmaker.
Report robo September 8, 2011 12:54 PM BST
his a punter wildman well if you think sidney is bigger on bf thats your opinion but trust me big boris is as big
Report wildmanfromborneo September 8, 2011 1:08 PM BST
Sidney closed his Betfair account and received a cheque for 830 thousand.
I seriously think you could help both these gentlemen especially Sidney,he is trying to avoid the punitive premium charge, you seem to have perfected different accounts on here.I am deadly serious and think you could advise people with profitable Betfair accounts how to minimise their exposure to the premium charge, there has to be a way.

This talk of "pro's" leaves me cold.

One of my father's claim to fame was that the late Sean Graham had a special moniker on him for shouting the credit bets ("with a ring" I belive is how the scribblers identified the bets on tick). I learned a few lessons from my late old man's penury.

We assume that a pro is a full-time gambler and, to my way of thinking, this is suitable for someone devoted to form study and every conceivable statistical and ephemeral angle that can be devised. Not larger than life charcaters who come and go. More Steve Lewis Hamilton that Eddie Elephants. No pain no gain!

My idea of a "professional" is a guy consistently profitable without any of the sideshows. Turning this into a living wage is another story entirely but it doesn't come from lurking in the ring getting your name in the paper.

Its so hard to get on nowadays that its surely the quiet, clever, painstaking approach that is best?

I just happened to be reading an article in last Saturday's post this morning on Edward Veitch the English pro.
He is some operator.

He won £500k on his own Expotential backed in from 100/1 to 8/1.
That was for starters. Plenty more after that. Mind you he has plenty of helpers to get his money on these days.

A very good read.
Report Rowley Mile September 9, 2011 1:35 AM BST
Book isn't a bad read read, the negative reviews on here made me read it, patrick veitch i presume tho soap.
Report workrider September 9, 2011 3:28 PM BST
i found the book good in spots ,then it trailed off to become a tale of money and his betting account ....not for me....
Report G Hall September 9, 2011 11:21 PM BST
thought his book was fairytale stuff really, and an ego trip.
