Almost that time of year again when it all kicks off. Only a few weeks away! It really does come around very quick. Anybody heard of any super pups that are burning up the gallops already? Does anybody know if last years Oaks heroine will be in action again this winter?? I really fancy the chances of the Matthews kennel having yet another champion stakes winner this season in the form of derby pines. Sound pistol should also be noted for all age cups this season, a very fast hound also. Any other dark horses for all ages that might have slipped under the radar as pups last season??

If advance ticket sales are any indication then there should be a huge crowd at Powerstown Park next week for the 87th National Coursing Meeting.
There was a huge uptake on the facility to book tickets on-line and the ticket centre at Davis Road report that ticket sales are way up on the last few years.
The special 3 Day Admission Tickets will remain on sale up to close of business tomorrow but must be booked through and collected from Davis Road. Normal Admission will be taken at the turnstiles on all 3 days.
It is expected that tickets for the Lodge Gate Car Park will be sold out by lunch time tomorrow (Friday) as less than a handful remain. Once again these must be collected from Davis Road by close of business.
Local hoteliers and guest houses also report that bookings are very heavy and the No Vacancy sign has gone up on most establishments

"You have to have a dream," says David Curtin; "Everyone needs a dream."
Forty years ago David bought a hillside farm just outside his native Tournafulla, over 100 acres of very challenging land. But David had a dream, and decades later he and his wife Noreen (and nowhere was partnership ever more true than working the land back then) were able to turn over a thriving dairy-farm to son Shane.
Modern milking parlour, concreted yards, everything spotless, spick and span. David and Noreen, a Clare native, retired to a cosy new stone-walled house at the edge of the farm, Shane and his new wife Michelle moved into the old family home but modernised it, Michelle using her design touch to enhance what was already there.
Rearing a family of four, carving a future from those hills, there wasn’t much David could do in the way of socialising but he did have one cast-in-stone annual break – the National Coursing Meeting in Clonmel. Late January/early February, the calm before the storm on a dairy-farm, the days before the hectic calving season kicks off, every year for the last 52 years David would head for Clonmel; for the last 38 of those years he would make a short holiday of it, staying with a few buddies in Hearn’s Hotel. It became his routine, his annual holidays.
This week the routine changes. One of the regular quartet of friends will be missing, David’s great friend Patrick O’Sullivan having passed away over the Christmas; his hearty company is sorely missed. The second major change, however, is joyous, very joyous.
In Clonmel this year the Curtin family will have two contenders, one in the Derby (Barrack Eoin) and one in the Oaks (Barrack Bimbo, Barrack the kennel prefix); one of those – Barrack Bimbo — is a live contender.
Though only 32, Shane is the breeder and trainer, a job he combines with the farming. It’s not that he wanted to make a fortune at it, though with hard work and a little luck a fella can make a few bob; no, this was love.
"When I first came home for good after I finished school I was more into going away for the weekend than anything else — when you’re younger you’re more interested in nights out than days out walking dogs!
"But then I got into the dairy-farming and I got into the dogs. I always loved dogs, bought my first dog from my Communion money! My uncle, Connie Curtin, was actually beaten in the semi-final of the Irish Cup in 76, Way Up Swanky.
"I suppose it was because of him really that I got into it, he was a fanatic. I was brought to the track, I was brought coursing, I was brought to the gallops. He’d always give me a pup or two so I’d always have some bit of an interest — that got me into it, and I’ve stayed with it more or less all the way up along."
There’s another reason also for Shane getting into dogs. "As a farmer I could get up there at six in the morning, do my work all day, and not meet a sinner from one end of the week to the other. Dogs give you an interest." They also give you something else. "When you’re winning, when you have a Trial Stake winner especially, it’s easy to stay interested but sure you’d always be dreaming anyway, walking the roads with a dog on a lead – those dreams shorten the walk."
Another man with a dream is Niall Curtin, Shane’s younger brother; no, it’s not of finally making it onto the Limerick senior hurling championship team, having tasted success with the All-Ireland U-21 team of 2002 (prospective brother-in-law Andrew O’Shaughnessy, engaged to their sister Eimear, was the star of that team).
"If John Allen came looking for me at this stage we’re in real trouble," he laughs. Niall, you see, is the full owner of Barrack Bimbo.
"Beginner’s luck," he says, "My first dog. I’d have gone to Clonmel a couple of times over the years, gone to the odd coursing meeting, but I’d never have shown the same interest in it as Shane. But Shane had a well-bred litter of pups, asked me if I’d be interested in buying one of them, have a bit of craic out of it, and I said ‘fair enough’. Well, I’m hooked on it now."
"He had a unique kind of selection process," says Shane; "There’s a passage in along by their dog-run and when the pups were about 12 weeks old he got them all gathered down in one corner and took off on a sprint up the road, as fast as he could — the first one up to him, that was the one he picked!"
"It worked, didn’t it?" counters Niall; "She did have a bit of a kink in her tail and I thought the lads were trying to pull a fast one on me, trying to persuade me to go with her — she was a nice-looking dog alright, only for that break in the tail. They told me that would make no difference and I wasn’t sure if they were trying to make a fool of me or not — they weren’t!"
They’re a warm family, the Curtins of Tournafulla, from a warm community, though that community and that way of life is coming under increasing pressure. The recession is having a devastating effect, two-thirds of the starting 15 from the team that ran eventual champions Garryspillane very close in the county senior hurling quarter-final of 2005 are now scattered around the globe, five of them helping Br. Pearses to the London Intermediate championship of 2010.
Law changes are also impacting. "There was a time when a man worked the land ‘til he wasn’t able anymore," says David, who – like his two sons – is as lean and fit as any of the greyhounds in training – no quads on this farm!
"But if a farmer retires now and is caught helping out on his own farm, he can lose his pension – I can take a spade and help my neighbour next door but I can’t lift a hand here!"
The drink driving laws also have a penal effect. David is lucky, he has family and anyway is only on the outskirts of the village, but many of his friends don’t enjoy the same convenience, can’t afford the taxi-fares either; they are now imprisoned in their own homes. "The village is gone very quiet," says Shane, "Local bars are really under pressure, struggling to stay going."
And still that life endures, rural Ireland battling on. "You have to have a dream," says David Curtin; "Everyone needs a dream." To so many people, Clonmel and its annual National Coursing Meeting offers that.
Long may it thrive, long may the Curtins of Tournafulla and families and places like them thrive

Lovely and bright day at Powerstown Park. Great sense of anticipation about the place. The Powerstown Park staff and local committee have the place looking superb. The new boxing shed worked really well at the trials. It is now almost parallel with the Slippers Hut. Hares run a straight line into it from the back run. Before they had to do a full right hand turn into the old boxing shed.
The field on the right as you drive into the Owners & Trainers car park is back in action too for handlers to walk and exercise their dogs. Big drainage job done on it during the summer. New addition is a bridge that brings you right into slips from this field. It will be well signposted on the day.
Came across Nigel Quinn cleaning the windows in the Club Stand. No doubt he was thinking of what might have been. Had a comrade of Cuddly Man, Cassiebeag, Laughing Lady and Let Me Call but alas he will be watching the action from the stands. However himself and his great friend Christy Browne will celebrate on Wednesday if Maughera Times throws a Classic winner.
As I’m chatting to Nigel a tractor and trailer pass by the Club Stand with a huge load of sallys. If the hares manage to get through all of these they will give the greyhounds a mighty run for their money next week. They are eating hay this year too. Top quality hay. The lads tell me it smells so nice you would eat it yourself. It is a nail biting time though for the local committee. They won’t relax until every hare makes it home safely under the escape.
Down below the vans from the catering company are moving in. Stocking up the shelves. Fair play they are doing a really good deal on the Soup and Sambo this year. Only €7, was €8.50 last year. Fine big mug of homemade soup too. Their Hot Steak Baquette with sautéed onions & relish goes down a treat at Thomond Park so if it’s good enough for Munster it should be well worth a try.
Back in the office we get word that Charlemont Mills is out of the ****.com Derby. Heartbreak for Kevin & Carol Rooney. They bought him after his trial stake win at Crohane. He was known as Battstreet Tiger then. Bad news for them but good news for Wood Hyland who comes in as reserve. Not long later Michael O’Donovan is on the phone. The rumours about the local hope Serene Dilemma are true and he is unable to take his place in the Derby. A few days ago Liam Dowling rang to know what time on Monday he would get his trial for the reserve D Ballymac Bex. Now he is in the Derby. And then the first big casualty of the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks. 10/1 shot Kingsmill Eve ruled out through injury. Many pundits thought she could give Michael Fitzpatrick & the Roches an Oaks trophy to go beside the one from Dynamo’s Derby win in 2009. The reaction of John Scully owner of Reserve A Volga Flow on hearing the news spoke volumes about how genuine coursing people are. “Kingsmill Eve gone ?. That is very sad for the connections. I was so looking forward to her meeting Fiery Sunset on Tuesday morning, two great bitches”.
As I leave the office I see the Presentation Jackets which Kathleen from Greyhound & Pet World sent up last week. DJ has already reminded me not to forget them on Wednesday. He was in Kilsheelan last November when I had a panic attack after realising I had left the jackets at home. I will have them in Powerstown ok but who will be wearing them ???? ---------------------

Absent friends remembered in stories and treasured memories
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
The early-morning grey mist over Powerstown Racecourse didn’t in any way dampen the spirits yesterday morning, opening day in Clonmel of the 87th annual National Coursing Meeting.
Old friends from all over the country – and beyond – meeting and warmly greeting at one of Ireland’s great sporting occasions. As ever, however, there were also absent friends, those who for various reasons, didn’t make it. Some have passed on, with us now in spirit only; some have reached a stage where attendance at this stamina-sapping all-day three-day outdoor event is no longer an option; some were merely out for this year only. Even as those in the sizeable attendance settled down to the day’s sport, however, all were fondly remembered.
So it was that Brendan Matthews and his clan, his kids and their kids, had a thought for their much-loved family matriarch, Anna, taken so suddenly from them during the last year. So it was that those of us who cover this event spoke fondly of veteran journalist Gerry McCarthy, he of the encyclopaedic knowledge of coursing and Clonmel but unable to tog off for this one due to illness. And so it was that we speak this morning of Tess Power.
Tessie featured in these pages before – in fact, along with husband Tom and son Lester, she’s one of the regulars. Their hospitality at the national meeting is legendary, a hot-whiskey stop to battle the cold first thing every morning for many, get the blood flowing. Tom is the quiet-spoken half of this relationship; Tess? Well let’s put it this way – Tessie Power has strong opinions, is ready to express them, and isn’t at all reluctant to use a bit of colourful emphasis.
Never was, in fact, according to Tom. "When she was still only a schoolgirl, the teacher lived across the road from them and said to her one day – ‘Tessie, you may take home my books for me today’ – ‘You may f***in’ bring them home for yourself!’ Even at that age she didn’t care about anyone."
She was a legendary figure, not just in Clonmel but at every local coursing meeting over the years up and down the country. Everyone has their own favourite Tessie Power story to tell, but everyone too began with the same rider – "But you couldn’t print it!" Tom tells a tale of a fella in the neighbourhood; word got out that he was beating his wife, so Tess got together with another formidable lady and – well, without getting into details, let’s just say that guy suffered his own comeuppance at the hands of those women, learned a hard lesson but learned it well! "God they’d be in jail today for what they did", says Tom, "But it worked!"
Charlie Murphy, a friend for over half a century, told a story of an occasion at a Trial Stake in Wexford. "Willie Duggan, the great rugby-player, had a bitch in training with Tom and Tess and after a few very tough runs she was in the final. Tom was rubbing the bitch, Tess was holding her – ‘Dammit, will you rub her, Tom’ she says, ‘You rub me twice as hard as that!’
Jim Quinlan, another old friend, remembers an incident in Tramore. "Tessie had a little shop, sold a lot of vegetables. They were in a loose display, no plastic bags then, not washed either. There was a very kind of hoity-toity lady, a Mrs Fennelly from Callan in Co Kilkenny – she was actually a distant relative of my own — out staying in one of the holiday chalets and happened into Tessie’s; there she was, browsing, and eventually she came over to Tessie – ‘I wonder madam,’ she says, ‘Would you be able to get the vegetables for me, I don’t want to get my hands dirty.’ ‘If you f***in’ want them you can get them yourself!’ - that’s exactly what she said.
She was a straight-shooter, took no prisoners, and yet, says Anne Quinlan - Jim’s wife and another old friend – was soft-centred. "It was her heart, her kindness. All my kids, when they were young, she’d always have a half-crown or a two-shilling piece for them, they never went away from Tessie empty-handed."
Tessie wasn’t there yesterday, at 81 is feeling a little frail, though still – according to Lester – as feisty as ever. "The other morning in the nursing home the nurse said to me mother – ‘What would you like for your breakfast?’ Me mother thought for a second – ‘I’d love a smoked rasher!’ The nurse said – ‘Tessie, where would I get a smoked rasher?’ She wasn’t expecting the reply – ‘In a f***in’ shop, where else!’
She’s a once off, her presence sorely missed, but as with Anna and as with Gerry, as with so many others like the late Patrick O’Sullivan of Tournafulla who passed away only over the Christmas, in the stories and in the memories she is forever treasured.
Absent friends remembered in stories and treasured memories Tuesday, January 31, 2012 The early-morning grey mist over Powerstown Racecourse didn’t in any way dampen the spirits yesterday morning, opening day in Clonmel of the 87th annual National
CLONMEL once again lived up to its first day tradition of shocks when the National Coursing Meeting got underway yesterday.
In the ****.com Derby the biggest upset was 14-1 shot Windgap Lar’s defeat by Wood Hyland, one of the reserves, who came from behind to pip him in a no-turn course.
A second major shock was Swanky Matt (12-1) having to give best to Killeagh Matt by a two and a half lengths margin. Other fancied contenders to bite the dust included the fancied Cuddly Man, who went under to Cuine Boy by two lengths, and Hunters Glory (unsighted) who went out to Bahamian Kid.
There was a big gamble on Offshore Eoin, backed from 8-1 early on down to 5-1 favourite. As a result Belated Birthday, who opened 7-1 favourite, drifted to 11-1 as Blueview Sam (9-1) also came in for support.
Belated Birthday and Ashmore Sambo look likely to advance to the last eight from the opening quarter while Prime Example looks the pick of those at the top of the second quarter. Blueview Dan won nicely yesterday and could join him in the last eight. Go Home Hare would have been a strong contender here but a 41 second hunt yesterday could hinder his chances of progressing.
In the third quarter Offshore Eoin was impressive yesterday and it will be a big surprise if he doesn’t make it from the top of this sector. Who will join him is up for grabs as Skellig Wish, another who was heavily supported in the betting ring all morning, is now the worst handicapped dog in the field on 46 seconds and his prospects of advancing now look remote. At the bottom of this sector Solid Monk looks the part.
Blue Sam should advance to the final day from the top of the fourth quarter where he can be joined by Here Comes Harry who was involved in a controversial course yesterday against Ashmore Master. Ashmore Master was announced as the winner of the buckle, but it transpired that the pair ran in the wrong collars so the judge changed his verdict.
Offshore Eoin gets the nod to take the honours.
The big upsets in the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks were Gaisce Mor (10-1) going under to Blazing Dilemma, Spring Hawk (14-1) failing to master Silent Carol, Oh Banba upsetting the odds on Troanas Joy (14-1) and Dale Roisin getting the better of Holy Lady (10-1).
The only major gamble was on Emmas Goldrush who was 16-1 early on but was down to 8-1 before the classic started.
In the top quarter this morning Fiery Sunset should come out of the top of this sector while Emmas Goldrush can join her from the bottom of the quarter.
In the second quarter Fives Treasure was the most impressive winner yesterday and will take some beating while Yorkville Stella can also make it to the last day.
Oilean Smile could be the solution to an open top of the third quarter while Rios Girl can survive at the bottom.
The top of the final quarter looks a battle between Come On Vivienne and Capetown Lucy who look likely to meet in the third round while it is hard to oppose Ravel Glory at the bottom.
Fives Treasure, so impressive yesterday, is clearly the percentage bet here.

THE surprises of the previous day continued at the second stage of the National Coursing meeting yesterday, with the biggest upsets coming in the Boylesport.com Derby.
Very few gave Skellig Wish any chance of advancing further, as he was heavily run in the opening round, but he showed tremendous courage when putting out the long odds favourite Offshore Eoin on a just up decision when coming from behind. He then advanced the last eight when beating Tom Bawn by a length, but it will be a miracle if he can go any further as he was also hard run in this buckle.
The hope of the north, Ashmore Sambo, also bit the dust being led all the way by Brindle Man who had a length and a half in hand for the opening turn. Another major upset was Here Comes Harry being eliminated, running unsighted in his buckle with Aftertiming.
However, it’s still very much a case of all to play for in the classic. India Rio clocked a very fast time in his third round yesterday and could advance to the semi-final at the expense of Belated Birthday.
Patsy Byrne’s Prime Example faces Go Home Hare in the second quarter final and, the way the latter is running, he looks the one to advance.
It will be a sensation if Skellig Wish somehow manages to see off Solid Monk as he is miles behind in the handicap while Blueview Sam, the new long odds favourite, should get the better of Aftertiming in the last of the quarter finals.
The progressive Blueview Sam gets the nod to win out.
In the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks there was only one big upset in the second round with Rosie Hedge getting the better of Come On Vivienne by two lengths. There was a bigger shock in the third round when the northern owned second favourite, Ravel Glory, went out by a length to Dale Roisin. Other minor upsets in this round included Yorkville Stella being ousted by Awe And Wonder and Oh Banba defeating Oilean Smile.
In the quarter finals this morning Feede Blond will be expected to overcome Emmas Goldrush while it is hard to oppose the long odds favourite, Fives Treasure, who has been superb all week. She should make the semi-finals at the expense of Awe And Wonder.
Coffee In Currow impressed the clockers yesterday and may have the measure of Oh Banba, who had a hard third round course. There is little between Rosie Hedge and Dale Roisin, with the latter possibly the percentage bet to advance.
Fives Treasure has been very impressive all week and can claim the crown.
The two all-aged stakes, the Classic Club Champion Stakes and the Grace Bruton Memorial Stakes are down for decision today.
Kyle King can give Marie Field some compensation for the defeat of Kyle Ranger in the Derby last year by taking the Champion Stakes while Southside Tess looks the part in the Grace Bruton Memorial.
Progressive Sam poised to land Derby By Tom Higgins Wednesday, February 01, 2012 THE surprises of the previous day continued at the second stage of the National Coursing meeting yesterday, with the biggest upsets coming in the Boylesport.com Derby. V
We’ve spoken before in these pages about the earthiness of those who go to Clonmel every year for the annual National Coursing Meeting, of how grounded they are in nature, how self-sufficient.
During the regular season they’ll go from Trial Stake to Trial Stake, to places where the facilities are first, last and foremost for the hares and the hounds, and where the humans are expected to look after themselves.
These events last for several hours, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and for all of those hours you’re on your feet, exposed to the elements. The break then, when it comes, is a special time; some will go to the mobile chipper, most head for the car-boot, for the flask and the sandwiches.
Clonmel though is different. Here you have the stands, cover from the elements for those who arrive early enough; here also you have the likes of Masterchefs Hospitality serving up a selection of more upmarket mobile grub.
Yet still people head for the car-boots. Every day, however, the largest crowd of all heads for a couple of cars parked at the back end of the dog-owners’ car-park. Why? Well that’s where Brendan Murphy and his father Christy are parked, alongside the Quinlan family, and by now in Clonmel the word has spread. The food is special, yes, a buffet lunch you’d pay dearly for anywhere else, but it’s the company, the camaraderie, the communion.
"I was raised on this," Brendan explains, "When I was a young fella we used to come here every year and it was the very same then as it is now. The sandwiches, the salads, the tea and coffee, they all came out of the boots of the cars, everyone pooled in and shared with one another. The Quinlans, the Spratts, the Mackeys – John and Mrs. Mackey were still there then – that’s where all this started."
Oh it’s an impressive spread, a truly impressive spread, but Brendan dismisses any credit for the quality of the fare on offer, the platters of seafood, cold meats, salads etc, or the cost of same. "Sure cost doesn’t come into it – if you were looking only at the cost of things nowadays you wouldn’t even get up in the morning! It’s very easy for me now, we own the Horse & Hound hotel in Ballinaboola (near New Ross) and the staff would have all the food ready for us in the morning, all we have to do is load it into the car and on we come, so I can’t claim that much credit for it." As for the hot whiskeys and hot ports – "That comes out of someone else’s car! Everyone does their piece – it’s a routine at this stage."
It’s a hive, is what it is, and within minutes of the break Jim Quinlan’s improvised table has been set and the influx starts. "This is why I love Clonmel," says Christy. "Meeting all the old friends – that’s what it’s all about, this little community. We started doing this over 30 years ago and it’s gone on and on – a lot of old friends, like Jim Spratt and Andy Hughes, Michael Heeney and his daughter Eimear — they’re from Louth and they’re here with us every year; you have the Buckleys from Cork, old friends, but we’re also meeting new people all the time. People will ask me – how did you get to know so-and-so? Clonmel, that’s how."
What puzzles both Brendan and his father, however, is the lack of coverage that the National Coursing Meeting gets, on television especially. "I think they’re a little bit asleep," says Brendan; "Minority sports are almost ignored by the likes of RTE and TV3, and I don’t know why." Given that his daughter Gráinne, a swimmer, has qualified for the Olympics later this year, yet could still walk down any street in Ireland and probably remain unrecognised, Brendan knows whereof he speaks. "Do we really want to see soccer every day of the week?" he asks, but the question is rhetorical. "I heard a lot of people today here discussing a documentary they saw last night about the contribution of the Irish to Australia – that’s the kind of thing we need, a bit of variety. We DON’T need to see the same thing every day. For months before Clonmel the various Trial Stakes are big events in their own areas, yet there’s no coverage. The Corn na Féile in Abbeyfeale every year, a huge event, ignored; the Irish Cup in a few weeks’ time, a massive prize-fund, same thing. Very little coverage nationally, apart from the Irish Examiner."
No matter, and in a way coursing is better off away from the glare, away from those who would never understand. The car-boot commune, what better medium do you need?

It's the craic i go for, i watch the greyhounds alright but the craic does be mighty different crowd altogether then goes track racing. Nothing like putting on the waterproofs and wellies and standing out in a field getting drowned and having mighty craic then going to the track suited and booted and talking shoite to a load. It's like rugby union and rugby league or hurling and football it's whatever floats your boat.

GO Home Hare, the property of the Mel Syndicate from Glin, Co. Limerick captured the ****.com Derby at Clonmel yesterday when he defeated an injured Blueview Sam by a wide margin in the decider.
There were no surprises in the quarter-finals of the Derby with India Rio having a bye when Belated Birthday was withdrawn, Go Home Hare then led all the way to the escape when putting out Prime Example by eight lengths.
Solid Monk got the better of a gallant Skellig Wish, who had been hard run in the opening three rounds, by a length and a half for the only turn while the overnight favourite Blueview Sam saw off Aftertiming, when coming from behind, by three lengths.
Go Home Hare then took over at the top of the market and put paid to the chances of India Rio by a half a length in a tight course, while Blueview Sam had two lengths to spare over Solid Monk.
The stage looked set for a thrilling final but after fifty yards it was obvious that Blueview Sam was injured and Go Home Hare raced away.
The surprises of the previous two days continued in the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks. The opening quarter-final worked out as expected with Emmas Goldrush getting the better of Feede Blonde by a length and a half for the only score. The long odds favourite, Fives Treasure duly accounted for Awe And Wonder by four lengths with the loser getting in for the only other turn. Few gave Oh Banba any chance of advancing as she was hard run in the third round, but she confounded the pundits by putting out the fancied Coffee in Currow by two and a half lengths for the only score. In the last quarter-final Dale Roisin had a great battle with Rosie Hedge before coming out on top by two lengths.
It was generally expected that the winner of the Emmas Goldrush — Fives Treasure buckle would take the honours and when Emmas Goldrush upset the favourite when taking the only turn she became a hot favourite to win out.
Dale Roisin then raced all the way to the escape in her semi-final with a tired Oh Banba, having four lengths in hand.
Emmas Goldrush was a 1-3 chance in the final but Dale Roisin took an early lead and then raced away to take the turn by three lengths, much to the delight of the bookmakers as it sank most of the trebles.
It was a great afternoon for Mrs. Marie Field of Patrickswell, Co. Limerick as she got her two representatives, last year’s Derby runner-up Kyle Ranger, and Kyle King to the decider of the Classic Club Champion Stakes with Kyle Ranger declared the winner.
The surprises of the Oaks continued in the Grace Bruton Memorial Champion Bitch Stake where Portinard Nine, the rank outsider of the field at 12-1 beat Southside Tess by a length in her quarter-final and then put paid to the chances of the even money favourite, Beautiful Chrisy, by a narrow margin in the semi-final.
In the final she was opposed by Class Attraction (1-2), who won the event last year, but Portinard Nine (6-4) wasn’t to be denied and raced away to a five lengths success.

Hope springs eternal for the vanquished of the coursing field
By Diarmuid O’Flynn
Thursday, February 02, 2012
Hope springs eternal, and at the end of another superb National Coursing Meeting in Clonmel, why not?
It was day three of this annual event, finals day, it was also the first day of spring, and what a day we got for it – blue skies, sun shining, birds singing. Those weren’t the only reasons for the thousands who had just witnessed the grand finale of the Meeting – the ****.com Derby final – to leave with hope in their hearts, however.
In that same event last year, the 2011 Derby final, the hotly fancied Kyle Ranger put in a brave but futile effort before losing out to Central City. Ranger, you see, had been injured in the semi-final, and up against a dog of such quality, up against the hill of Powerstown, there was only ever going to be one result.
Kyle Ranger was trained and owned by the Field family of Patrickswell and they were devastated, Michael and his wife Marie (Ranger’s owner) trying to put a brave face on things at the top of the course, daughter Elaine in bits as she nursed Ranger on the buggy-ride back to the van.
Yesterday the Field family were back in Powerstown, and so was Kyle Ranger, coming in as a late reserve but winning the prestigious Champion Stakes, his kennel-mate, Kyle King, withdrawn (understandably) in the final.
"It’s a marvellous achievement," said Michael, "To bring back Ranger after the injury of last year, the disappointment. He’s a great dog – a lot of pressure today but he stood up to it."
Now we look at this year’s Derby final. All week Blueview Sam had been by far the most impressive dog on view, clocking consistently better than everyone else – until the semi-final. He won again, just getting the better of Solid Monk who lost ground when changing sides, but his ‘clock’ was more than 20 points (over 0.2 of a second) slower than he had done to then. Within 20m of the start of the final we learned why – Sam was injured. Like Kyle Ranger last year he kept going, showed his big heart and kept hunting, but like Ranger he was well beaten, ended up having to be carried back down the field in the buggy.
As with Kyle Ranger last year, Blueview Sam is owner-trained, by the Collins family from Drogheda. "They’re the epitome of the coursing family," explains Ger O’Callaghan, who takes the dogs to slips for them; "There isn’t a year goes by that Jim (father of the clan, trainer of the dogs) doesn’t have two or three dogs but that’s it, no more. Every year he rears a few pups and has the dream; this year he had only two, Blueview Dan and Blueview Sam, but between them they’ve won five cups."
Before the final Jim’s daughter Suzanne (joint owner along with her mother, Bernadette) was trembling, fretful. "I had a baby in September, had to have an emergency C-section, but I’m more nervous now than I was then!" she said. "It’s for my Dad more than anything – he’s up early every morning, putting in huge time and effort. He came so close so many times here, often beaten by just a whisker, but he has finally broken his duck on the last day, got to the final."
Alas, what might have been! Now Suzanne sits where Elaine Field sat last year, nursing Blueview Sam on the long trip downfield, and like Elaine last year, she’s heartbroken for Sam, disappointed for her Dad. But, there is that hope, isn’t there? There is that dream, as proved by the way Kyle Ranger came back, as proved even by the dog that beat Sam – anything is possible, isn’t it?
Go Home Hare – who saw this fella coming? Certainly not John Paul Fitzgerald, one of the 12 unlikely apostles who got together in a bar in Clonmel last year and formed the Mel Syndicate, their aim to buy an ould dog who could compete in their local duffer stake in Glin, but ended up with a Derby winner.
"I’m shocked," said John Paul, "Can’t believe it. We were in the bar, half-drunk, decided to buy a dog. We got this fella, my father and myself, €1,300, brought him home to Glin and he stayed with us for five months; he went up then to Dessie Kerrigan (trainer) in the north and all we asked was that he’d come down to run in the local (the duffer in Glin), which he did. He won that, then went on to win a Trial Stake, and now this – he’s won everything."
The Glin gang did it, the Fields did it – why not Sam and the Collins family? "Congratulations to Go Home Hare, he’s a terrific dog," said Suzanne, "But we’ll fight back and hopefully give the Champion Stakes a good run next year." Spring, and hope eternal.

Minister opposes ban on coursing and claims hares never in any danger
CONOR KANE irishtimes.ie
A JUNIOR Minister has rejected the banning of live hare coursing, saying the greyhound sector creates jobs and is “part of our way of life” in Ireland.
Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Shane McEntee, who is responsible for the sector, also said there is no danger to the hare and opponents should come and witness the sport for themselves.
He said the Government is “committed to supporting the whole greyhound industry” and that includes both track racing and coursing. Speaking at the final day of the National Coursing Meeting in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, Mr McEntee said the greyhound sector creates employment and is a part of Irish life.
“The best greyhounds in the world are bred in Ireland, just like the best horses are bred in Ireland. We have to make sure no one comes near to taking that away from us.”
Two members of the Technical Group in the Dáil, Clare Daly and Maureen O’Sullivan, have indicated their intention to introduce a private members’ Bill before Easter, seeking the abolition of hare coursing. Mr McEntee yesterday appealed to opponents of the sport to witness it at first hand.
“Anyone who would come down and see what is happening today – the only one that’s being made a fool of is the greyhound. There’s no danger to the hare and people should come and see for themselves.”
Up to 50,000 people are estimated to have attended the three days of the national coursing meeting, in Powerstown Park racecourse in Clonmel, which is estimated to be worth about €16 million to the local economy. Chief-executive of the Irish Coursing Club, DJ Histon, pointed out that muzzling of the greyhounds taking part has been in place since 1993.
He said that, of the 565,000 hares found to exist in Ireland in a Department of the Environment survey in 2007, coursing clubs required 1 per cent.
The Clonmel event attracted large-scale protests in the years before muzzling was introduced but in recent years opposition has been more low-key.
A small crowd led by the Animal Rights Action Network held a “symbolic” protest outside Powerstown Park on Monday but there was no picket yesterday

Irish Cup winner Jeru Cavendish, under the guardianship of John O’Donoghue, Co. Clare and trained by John Browne, Co. Clare, has been sensationally disqualified almost four months after the event was staged at Patrickswell, Co Limerick.
Although the rumour mill has been buzzing with speculation for some weeks, the news finally came to light yesterday when the ICC announced that tests from the National Greyhound Laboratory revealed the winner of the blue riband event had tested positive for the banned substances, Ephedrine and Phenylpropanolamine.
A meeting of the Hearing Committee, appointed by the ICC Executive Committee, found connections in breach of rule 88 and ordered the forfeiture of the €80,000 prize money and trophies.
The trainer was also cautioned as to future observance of ICC rules.
Beaten finalist Killimor Matey, trained by Jerry Holian and owned by Michael Ryan, Johnstown, Co Kilkenny, has been officially declared the Irish Cup winner and the record amended so that each greyhound beaten by Jeru Cavendish is promoted by one round and prize money awarded based on revised round positions.
In further fallout from the testing procedures, two greyhounds who competed at the National Meeting in Clonmel on February 1, were also found in breach of Rule 88.
Derby semi-finalist India Rio, owned by the Strictly Private Syndicate c/o John Murphy and trained by John Murphy, Co. Cork, was found to have the banned substance Modafinil in his system and has been retrospectively disqualified.
Connections must surrender the prize money of €3,500 and the trainer also cautioned as to future observance of ICC Rules.
The knock-on effect means each greyhound beaten by India Rio is promoted by one round and the prize money revised accordingly.
Champion Stakes quarter-finalist Dresden Call, owned by Josephine McCarthy, Dublin and trained by John Kelliher, Co. Kerry, was found to have Ephedrine in his system and was duly disqualified.
Connections forfeit the prize money of €1,500 and the trainer also cautioned as to future observance of ICC Rules.
As in the other cases, each greyhound beaten by Dresden Call is promoted by one round and prize money again adjusted accordingly.
There were no appeals against any of the decisions and ICC CEO/secretary DJ Histon explained that in all three cases no further penalties were imposed as the committee took into account the ‘open manner’ in which the parties presented their cases.
Histon was also emphatic that the ICC will remain vigilant, warning: "The Rules of the ICC apply to everyone and must be enforced evenly to ensure a fair platform for all participants and when the rules are infringed appropriate sanctions must apply. This is the minimum standard on which any sport must operate".
* The outcome of the investigation concerning the winner of the 2006 Irish Cup, Boavista, has not been concluded as it is the subject to protracted legal proceedings
