Thomas J Taafe a great trainer of jumpers.Won the gold cup with kicking king,and i'd say he wouldnt charge more than 5 or 600 a week.All Tom needs is the raw material,won the Galway plate last year as well so his record is second to none.Very unassuming down to earth kind of fellow,a real salt of the earth kind of guy

I wouldn't be one for wishing bad luck in someone but if ever a fella deserved it . . .

If your in the eastern part of the country then Liam Kenny could be worth a look. He had sixteen p2p winners last year from only 51 runners which is very impressive (stats skewed by a few multiple winners but impressive nonetheless). The standard in the east would typically be a touch lower than the south plus Jamie Codd is his regular pilot. I don't know much about him personally but he seems to place them well and keep them in form for a string of runs anyway so i'd imagine you cold do a whole lot worse.

If your a Munster man then theres obviously any number of potential options with Edmond Kent an interesting, emerging trainer. He has had a few nice young types through his hands that have been sold to England in recent years.

jamesie, had a pal ask the exact same question 12 months ago, sent him to where i suggested and got a win for him. the man you want is willie murphy, he is based somewhere in carlow, he has a very high strike rate pointers in training to winners, and he will tell you quickly whether you should get rid of your horse or if he can win with it.

Thanks lads. I have looked up stats on last seasons top handlers and note that certain trainers had very good strike rates, I will further examine these stats to see whether they contained multiple winners. Keen Leader I chatted Willie Murphy at the August Sales at Tatts two years ago and found him to be a decent sort, not full of the usual BS that you get sometimes. He will definitely come into our considerations.
Allduckornodinner, thanks for your suggestions also, I will look into Liam Kenny and Edmond Kent, while I am from the Midlands so ideally somewhere within a reasonable commute would be great,finding the right trainer would be more important.
The horse himself is a late maturing type (still only 4) so for the first year if the trainer can get him to jump properly, I would be satisfied as he mightnt be strong enough to do himself justice until he is 6.

If your in the midlands then actually a decent pick could be Dot Love who handles all the Gigginstown breakers and is set up somewhere in Westmeath or at least not too far from it I believe.

She produced a good winner off a break in Galway today and knows a thing or two about teaching horses how to jump. I wouldn't imagine she would be interested in keeping a yoke around the place either so you will probably be told fairly sharpish if it's not worth having in training.

See now,ye thought Mince was a mug.Obviously Westwood was reading the forum,recognised a good judge and has taken his advice and given Tom the nod.Best of luck to both Tom and Lee with their horse and if you are reading, either of ye that is,then i wish horse,trainer and owner all the best in the future.Now Tom,i cant do anymore for you mate,its time to weave your magic.

I believe that Tom and Lee get their neckties made at the same place and the association sprang from there.
