Anyway here again is his article of admiration for two Irelands most honest and uncorruptable trainers!

Martin and Byrnes still handicap kings

Pat Keane: The Voice of Racing

Saturday, May 21, 2011

Charles Byrnes’ Scottish Boogie justified strong market support in a maiden hurdle at Killarney on Sunday.

THERE were a couple of races at Killarney during the week which emphasised the skills of two trainers, Tony Martin and Charles Byrnes.

On Sunday, Martin’s Sensational Sema landed a minor touch in a handicap hurdle and you would have to say it represented a classic piece of planning.

The seven-year-old had run just five times on the track and shown little or nothing. Disappointing, you might argue, for a horse who had won his only point-to-point, when going off a hot favourite!

The test for any trainer, of course, is to do the best he can for all of his horses, whether they are potential Gold Cup winners, or low-grade handicappers.

And it is that ability to assess their charges at an early stage which sets the likes of Martin and Byrnes apart from many of their fellow trainers.

Sensational Sema ran four times over two miles and once at two miles and three and, looking at him winning at Killarney, it was glaringly obvious he would struggle to score over shorter trips.

Martin clearly knew this and gave Sensational Seems his final outing, prior to Killarney, over two miles at Gowran Park on March 5. He trailed in 13th of 19 finishers.

But fast-forward to Killarney and getting what was needed most, a proper test of stamina over two miles and six, we saw a different animal entirely.

That race at Gowran was the horse’s first venture into handicap company and he ran off a mark of 105. The handicapper then dropped him 2lbs.

And that 2lbs may well have been the difference between victory and defeat. Sensational Sema had to get a power-packed drive from Ruby Walsh to score by half a length and the 6-1 to 9-2 business was completed.

In the greater scheme of things it was no big deal, but for the lads from Bellaghy in Derry, who own the horse and had made their way to Kerry, it was hugely important. If they decide to have another beastie guess where it will end up?

At Killarney as well on Sunday, Byrnes’ Scottish Boogie, a three-time winner on the flat in England for Sylvester Kirk, justified strong market support in a maiden hurdle.

He went there having had four runs over hurdles in Ireland. Scottish Boogie could not be mapped in the first three, but then in the fourth outing hinted his time might be coming.

At Limerick on April 3, Scottish Boogie was fourth behind clear winner, Total Reality, and you can watch the contest as often as you like and will not find any reason why the stewards should have inquired into the performance.

In none of his four races did Scottish Boogie attract support of any significance in the betting markets.

But at Killarney he was heavily backed and would have won far more snugly — he seemed to have a nice bit in hand anyway — but for errors at the last two flights.

The bottom line here is that any eejit can plan to take the layers to the cleaners, but the trick is to pull it off. Not many can manage that task.

legend dead right. His cute hoorism antics get on my wick. Try engaging him at the races and see what kind of an idiot he is. He has a soft job with the phome number of every trainer and rider in the Country. If he could not win punting then he is even thicker than I thought. The fact that he has to moan about not being able to get on himself IMO just confirms that he is a bell end

Weldrunner catches the eye
By Pat Keane
Tuesday, July 26, 2011
THE last race at Galway tonight, the Caulfieldindustrial.com EBF Maiden, houses the safest wager in the shape of Dermot Weld’s Catch The Eye.
She has clearly been kept in reserve for Ballybrit and this certainly appears a very suitable opportunity indeed.

The daughter of Oratorio hasn’t been seen since finishing second behind Claoimh Solais at Naas in the middle of May, a contest which has been working out quite nicely.

Claoimh Solais has developed into a more than useful filly, putting up her best display when fourth to Misty For Me in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh.

Third in that Naas contest was John Oxx’s Dawariya and she went on to win her next two races.

Biggest danger is the progressive Diamond Daze, who chased home the year older Gonebeyondthemoon at Fairyhouse.

Weld’s Stunning View could provide the answer to the richly endowed Topaz Mile EBF Handicap.

In a wide-open contest, for which wagers should be kept to a minimum, the selection shouldn’t be too far away. The son of Shamardal has been rested since Royal Ascot, where he ran really well when 11th of 28 behind Walter Swinburn’s Julienas in the Hunt Cup, having far from a clear passage.

One of the better contests, on a particularly difficult card, is the Caulfieldindustrial.com EBF Fillies Maiden for juveniles.

There are some promising sorts in this, with the nod falling on Aidan O’Brien’s once-raced Soon, a daughter Galileo.

She didn’t exactly set the world alight on her debut, a well beaten fourth behind Princess Sinead at the Curragh.

But we know that Ballydoyle inmates are capable of dramatic improvement from run to run and that sways one towards Soon.

Dorset Square, who seemed to win with a little bit in hand at Killarney, might be able to shrug off a 6lbs rise in the weights in the Topaz Handicap

Shrewdies and ew thieves always bet in maidens. Give them a dirty handicap and they wouldn't know where to start.
Report silvergreaser July 26, 2011 1:39 PM BST
Hardly earth shattering form analysis, he picked 3 racing post tissue favourites and one 2nd fav, and gives the main danger to "catch the eye" as? yeh you guessed it Diamond Gaze the clear 2nd fav.
Report soapp July 27, 2011 7:39 PM BST
Last night he napped Catch The Eye, NB'ed Soon and was the only tipster in the RP selection box to tip Stunning View. Deeds speak louder than words. He puts his money where his mouth is and doesn't tip others if he is going to bet lumpy just to get a better price.

a top class tipster imo.
